Apologise, validate feelings, put tickets on sale

176

“We are truly sorry you have not been able to join us at Celtic Park and sorry we have not been able to deliver the further success which your support has deserved. We understand how difficult this year has been for you and understand the disappointment you have felt, it is something shared by us all at the Club.”

Paragraph two of the season ticket renewal email sent to fans yesterday contained two apologies and a validation of disappointment felt at the last year’s performance, a consistent theme from the club since wheels started to spin off the wagon last autumn.

Despite delaying Renewal Day by five weeks beyond the usual issuance date, solely due to the fact that we do not have a manager, the act was triggered without a change in this key status.  For a short period, anyway, tickets sold will be a faith-based purchase.  Aren’t they always, though?

When I reviewed the dates we appointed managers since Lou Macari joined in October 1993, the 1 June stood out: we have made as many appointments on that date (two) than before it, in the last 28 years.  I have no idea what that is, although you have to suspect it is something to do with money.

But still, why send renewals out now?  There are pragmatic reasons.  People need time to make purchase decisions and ticket office staff need time to process thousands of enquiries.  Can you imagine the number of tickets lost in the last 14 months, on top of regular issues?  The window for all of this is one month, tight, by historical standards.

Then there is the churn to deal with.  Tickets not renewed will be offered to the waiting list, accepted, or reoffered after another period.  Department heads will have advised their final execution date for tickets, retail stock and staffing and club broadcasting decisions months ago.  You can be sure 26 May was the ticket office’ deadline.

If by next week, 1 June overtakes the entire month of May as the mode value when Celtic appoint a manager, it will look like things are under control again.  But don’t quote me on it!

  1. Based on no science whatsoever, I believe the seson ticket renewals have been sent out as soon as it appears likely we will have some news soon.

1st June seems to be an opportune date.

I have absolutely nothing to base this on. Purely a hunch.

Makes sense for renewals to have been sent to inboxes by the time the new team are announced. Next week could be interesting

Was sitting at my break at work today and someone has left a paper. Read through it and saw that the vermin are supposed to be building a museum this year.

I’m thinking of buying a ticket to find out how the tour guide manages to explain away the year 2012.

  6. From the Herald today- more damaging evidence for the conduct of the Administrators of Ould Rangers:-

“FOOTBALLER Steven Naismith said the administrators of Rangers rejected an offer for him from an English Premier League Club as they were trying to cut costs as the club financially imploded.

The transfer to English Premier League team West Bromwich Albion would have raised £2m for creditors owed millions through the insolvency of Rangers and saved on his £20,000 a week wages – but he ended up leaving for nothing.”

It is obvious to me that things are not under Celtic’s control at this moment in time. There is no way that it is Celtic’s choice to be starting the Season Ticket renewal process without a manager and backroom staff in place. It is after all a main plank of the marketing push.

So if the process of engaging a manager is not in Celtic’s control, then by definition it is in someone else’s control – we should all be worried about that, I submit.

If EH has agreed to become the boss, but a previous contract prevents him from doing so until June 1 – surely he, or, his representatives…..or even Celtic, should be able to issue a statement to that effect -“EH has agreed to accept an offer to become manager of Celtic on June 1, subject to the all outstanding legal & contractual obligations being completed”. That leaves ample wriggle-room.

I am not TOTALLY blaming Celtic, perhaps all things are not in their hands – but in such an important matter to allow the agenda to be set by others, at their own pace and to their own timing, is quite frankly baffling.

To me it more and more looks like Steve Clarke is the next boss, but the SFA, or, maybe even Steve, are insisting no announcement prior to the Euros – maybe feeling that it would cause unrest ‘in the camp’

An unnecessary vacuum has been created. Celtic should not be surprised that there is a queue now forming to fill it….including me!

The club’s ST offer (marketing exercise) is derisory and insulting, particularly given my £666 blind support last season. The give-aways are of no interest and zero value to me. This, on the back of redundancy last year, no benefits, and no jobs on the horizon means that this supporter will revert to being a fan. 🤢 I believe the imminent announcement of a manager is a diversion.

  9. Very damning evidence via Steven Naismith they refused £2M because it might have kept them afloat.

  13. Celtic are playing this all wrong. No manager is not the main question. What are you getting for your book?

When will we get in to games? How many? How will the ballot be organised? How many games will we get in.?

If we don’t get in will we be getting pass to paradise again.? What is the proposal?

I wont be renewing until more information is provided

  14. I have said many times on here, I have been a Celtic supporter since Donald Duck was an egg, a long long time!!!!

Sadly, I have had enough. I love Celtic, full stop.

But the scandalous way we as fans are treated, is tantamount to utter disgrace .

For weeks we have heard nothing, nothing. Strange that when they want our money for season books, they come out with Oh the manager will be in place shortly.

So, we get to know tomorrow who that poor bastard is, and ok all is well.!! No it bloody is not ok.

The board have shown clearly, they treat us like mugs, and mugs we are to accept that shit.

So no more football for wee me, I have more important things to do than be treated like a fool by those barstewrds.

  16. In a fairly recent ‘Planet Football’ article, (Private Eye No. 1546), a critique of the attempt to form the European Super League, (something Celtic FC would never have attempted in Scotland in the mid 1970s) ‘Slicker’ (the writer’s nom de plume) made a startling claim, well to me anyway, that, of British clubs, only Manchester United and Celtic “remain as listed clubs”. And if I am not mistaken the former are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, leaving ourselves alone in London. Can that be true? And if so why are we still using a model, useful back in 1994, that appears to be only an ownership vehicle, and not one where there is any investment in the club. Not speaking as a shareholder myself, or a ST holder, and maybe echoing Auldheid here, but is it not time that season ticket holders, who really are the investors in the Football Club, have the value of their STs turned into equity on a year by year basis. And in so doing become over time, individually and collectively, the share holding owners of the Club. Need a good reason to withhold your season ticket money, there is one right there.

  17. I wouldn’t like to see if Celtic were god forbid ,relegated to the Championship,Going with some of the comments on here regarding renewing, them cowards of fans would see us in the First Division, see if you can’t afford to renew that’s fine ,first things first ,but if you can renew as much as this board have f——d up last season we need our 50 plus season ticket supporters more than ever to reclaim the title from Sevco .

  18. Squire Danaher has pointed out the lack of postings on this site.

I think this is apathy and a disinterest in the prospects for the long suffering fan. There is a chance that between the Covid restrictions and the lack of information on a new manager then the season book renewal may flop.

How can they ask fans to pay in these circumstances?

    1. We paid last year and never got to see a game. No refund

    2. The Team flopped and we lost the ten

    3. We are without a manager and a coaching team

    4. Half the players are on the way out the door

5 We dont know when we will get into a game

6 We dont know how many games we will get to

All of this is not the clubs fault but nevertheless this is the situation which we are in and have to make the best of it.

If we are not careful this could be the end of our club

How can they ask fans to pay in these circumstances?

    ———-

No criticism – you make a number of completely valid points.

What I would say is that we could be about to compound all the issues that face us and deliver a serious set-back to the club.

If, after one horrendous year in the last ten, we don’t ‘cough-up’, we run the real risk of a few more lean years. Those who turn up at Ibrox did so through the worst ten years in the history of a Rangers brand. Without their supporter base what would have happened after their self-inflicted collapse, administration and liquidation?

I don’t want to rehearse all the rights & wrongs of what they got away with – we are where we are! I fully understand that some ‘don’t have the stomach for it’ after all last season’s shenanigans and the new manager saga.

There is no guarantee what will transpire next season, but, one thing is for sure, we will need every penny we can get. Yes I’m stating the obvious, but there is no escaping from it.
