Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. JAMESGANG @ 1:06 PM,

Yes, he puts a lot of emphasis on the “surveys”, as academics tend too but not many are going to admit to being racist or bigoted and the fact many don’t even though – their opinions being “normal”.

I’m not suggesting the surveys were as basic as that but it does skew the results imo.

Of course since my teenage years began I’ve lived in England so my perspective is different. It is, if anything more disappointing as you say, to find it in folk you wouldn’t expect in “foreign” lands.

Last month I met an elderly Scot in a social type circumstance…

    Him: What’s your name?

Him: Ah! Are you spelling that with a “ph” or a “v”

    MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm

    Hail Hail

  2. I had not read the article right.

So Eddie will be on more than £50k a week, incredible.

  3. I feel obliged to bring to everyone’s attention that Sevilla’s Director of Football is called Monchi.

    Delicious…

  4. Go tell the Spartim on

    Por Cierto,

Point remains it takes us on average a week to sign someone, expecting many today would be a total shock, knowing far too many lawyers for my liking their procrastination is only surpassed by our contract team (they’re likely to be lawyers), if we only have 2 people working on them then that’s a worry.

Loan options will give us time to regroup and let AP sort the other parts out and prepare for the next window, I’m content that he’ll be in charge of that, no sleeping at the wheel on his watch.

  5. Is Lovric just a suggestion of a good signing or did we actually talk to his club about a transfer? Sorry if I missed the story on this.

Seems strange that such a good, relatively cheap player is not being snapped up.

  6. I myself am a PH.

I noticed over the years, people stopped asking if it was a PH or a V, and just wrote it directly with a PH.

Shear numbers of people I know in my generation who are PHs (65-71 vintage), there were 7 in my single class.

Ws it the Chalmers factor or just such a popular name at that time ?

To confuse matters, nephew with an ultimate Irish second name is a V. His mam is a bit naiephe abut these things.

  7. Martim1980,

Ange is pissed off , he said as much.

If you think that Celtic team will win the league you don’t know much about football. The manager has been shafted.

When he walks you will still be laughing as you come across as quite superficial.

I gave you a courtesy of a reply but I don’t need a juvenile response.

  8. P67

Poor article on a number of fronts — as noted by many others previously.

The story regarding OE seems to be especially forced / partial / slanted.

Not lazy journalism but agenda driven journalism — hello PL / still trying to land some digs?

2019 / 21 saw us in a bad place regarding financial management and squad development.

Paying over the odds and handing out big wages and loan fees like a drunk at last orders.

PL was the guy in charge and our wage bill has nearly sunk us — 20/21 accounts will be X rated.

Sorry to see OE go but with NL in charge he was wasting his time and it showed.

AP can heal the sick but he can’t raise the dead — OE needs a new focus / we need the money.

A PL inspired shambles made worse by his decision to buy AA and not IT.

Not so sorry to see RC go — good player / loads of potential but a bad BBB attitude.

Just ask the small people who dealt with him and KF who played with him.

Last season’s 9 month long strop was more than enough so cheery …

Hopefully we will go for it with the OE money.

Desperately need extra bodies to re-invigorate the squad.

Hopefully we will bring in U18 / U20 talent as well.

Looking for more than the 9 we have brought in so far.

As for the two SW “refugees” — another PL inspired shambles looks on the cards.

Too old for the B team / too raw for the 1st team bench?

    That takes some doing.

Too think that P67 has bigg’ed these two up to the nines and they nowhere near the first team.

9 hours plus to go …

AP / DMcK — chequebooks set to malky.

  9. The 40% sell on fee for Edouard is almost certainly, and if not someone was clearly on the sauce, a 40% of profit type deal.

There’s not a hope in hell that you’d have a contract clause of almost 50% of a players value even if they lost selling.

10-20% on the total sale or 40-50% of the profit would be the normal scenario.

I don’t think our club has ever been that badly run that it would be 40% of the total.

In any case £17m (or £15-20m) for a player that can sign a pre-contract in January is massive appreciation – if he was on a 3 year deal how much would it have been. And he’s not been that standard of player for more than 18 months.

Christie for £1m as has been reported would make little sense unless he wasn’t going to feature between now and January much, which I’m sure he would.

    I am really nervous

I hope to God nothing goes wrong with the OE deal to C Palace

As fo RC He should have signed a contract last summer or we should have sold him

    A PL mistake

As for the rest of the day I expect chaos

But I also think there will be a surprise

No idea who or from where

But I expect a surprise before midnight

  11. SAINT STIPHS @ 1:35 PM,

Yes, I’m a bit older than you but still had many a Stephen in my peer group at school or work.

My mum, who insisted I was Stephen, not Stevie or Steve, had two nicknames for me…

Steve McQueen and Stevie Chalmers… Yes she was allowed to call me it:)

Back to the old Scots boy

    What’s your name?

    Me: Steve

    Are you….

    Hail Hail

  12. Thanks Eddie and goodbye, thanks Ryan and goodbye to you too. Hope you have successful careers and make oodles of cash from the bampot English leagues.

If Leigh goes we’ll need a replacement. Looks to me like all other positions are covered. Jullien is our centre half , I suppose a loan signing would give more cover there. Imagine trying to persuade someone decent to come in as third or fourth choice. We signed Starfelt , it gets ridiculous how many players people want signed.

Sign a player on the off chance we’ll need him against them. On you go big guy you’ve got twenty minutes to get a goal or you’re a right off.

  13. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Whilst acknowledging Rome wasn’t built in a day, I’ll be disappointed if it’s only 2 new arrivals today. Even with Forrest, McCarthy and Julien still to return (I’ve written off Mikey Johnson), the squad looks thin.

  15. Go tell the Spartim on

A new CB wouldn’t be fourth choice, have you never listened to AP, they way he wants us to play requires rotation and we’ve got four tournaments to win, you and I, or the medical team have no idea on how CJ will cope when he comes back he’s likely to get many niggling injuries, you just be Bittons agent ? 😊

  16. It’s the customary spat between the ‘Squad Half-Full and Squad Half-Empty’ brigades/brigands.

I said it the other day, hat-tip to Dom, Ange and the financially appropriate possible signings list-compiler(s)

We have wheelt and dealt pretty decently IMO; Hart, Kyogo, Josip and Liel and, yes, Carl.

We have invested in some decent prospects: Bosun, Luke and Ozace.

And Ange has rehabbed Tony and Greg plus blooded young Monty a few times.

Unsure when James Mc will be robust enuff to stake his claim.

And if we’re getting in the Greek and Portuguese of some pedigree, all I’d want is a loaner CB like Benkovic.

SMILE and let the window slam shut. Under Ange, we are more then the sum of our playing parts.

BORGO – If Leigh goes we’ll need a replacement.

What? To run our social media accounts?

Without potential add-ons and applying reported profit % due to previous clubs I think this is how it ended up for what was seen as Celtic’s big four assets:

    Edouard: £12m (£14m-40%)

    Ajer: £12.2m (£13.5m-10%)

    Christie: £1m

    Ntcham: £0

    Total: £25.2m

    So roughly one Kieran Tierney…..

  18. Eddie and Highlander Ryan for the off to the land of milk and honey and good luck to them. Both shone for the Hoops but minds were elswhere of late. Both poor on Sunday but their last hurrah was against the Dutch and has to be said they played significant roles in getting us over the line and into the group stages of Europa.

Lacking in evidence and substance….but I’m superficial?

Ange has talked about frustration on transfers in general. Nothing Celtic specific. But you’re setting your plans to moan for 8 months without knowing, in any way, whatsoever how it will turn. This, with a history of only posting only negatively about Celtic.

    Good luck 😉

Now involved in a £8.6m transfer deal.

He never really pinned down a place at Celtic Park, and was less than a favourite of many on here who didnt appreciate his playing style that lacked in blood and snotters.

    Just saying like.

If big Nir never plays in central defence for us again it will still be too soon .

I hate deadline day. Like everyone I would love to see every good player mentioned signed. I know it’s not possible. We even put names out there not linked to us then disappointed when they don’t sign. I’m a patient person. I like Ange , if we have to suck it up for a bit longer then that’s ok with me. We look like we’re on the right track.

  25. SAINT STIVS

More evidence that development is rarely linear. We saw enough of him to know that he wasnt going to make it at Celtic, though.

Not the first to struggle with the pressure or, dare I say it, ridicule that some of our signings face when they come from a smaller club.

What does success look like then ?

Wilfully disingenuous on the previous blog and still leading the same argument.

Usain Bolt could win the Olympics, live on McDonalds for two years and make a comeback beating 80-year old grannies.

He’d still be successful judging by your argument.
