Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. On Sunday we have as good as we got, at ibrox, with a relatively new team and a load of derby debutants. We made a few very good chances, you won’t see a better self-made chance in a derby than the one Eddie missed

We have replaced our two worst performers from that day.

We have a strong defensive midfielder and our best centre back to come into the team

We’re still a work in progress, plenty of room for improvement, new faces to bring in, time for Ange to work on the team

Given all that I saw very little to suggest we won’t beat them in January. If that’s the case, why the panic?

What’s all this faux optimism based on? We are threadbare on quality, the manager has already said so every time we hear him that he needs more players, he’s here to win things and leave his mark, just what are we keeping all the money for, surely some of the erudite posters on here can point this out for me.

We are one injury short of the haphazard Bitton plying as a CB, our current midfield would be (based on projected sellings) Calmac, Turnbull and Rogic, every game, Soro isn’t good enough or he’s just not up to speed on how he needs to play in the system. In defence we’ve still got Welsh but he’s got a lot still to learn, replaced Ajer with Starfelt (the valuation in cost is surely some sort of indicator, though I think Starfelt is coming onto a game), we’ve got the same inadequate LB, what an upturn in Ralston (fair play to him), we have a new RB that I’m optimistic about, LB/CB in Scales is untested in full time football (apologies if I’ve got that wrong), I’m happy with Hart in goals, Kyogo up front, Abada too, Forrest and McCarthy have yet to do anything.

As of now we haven’t signed anyone else since Scales, we might have a proper coach, going on what I’ve seen so far, he is, he’s been given 5 loaves and two fish and realised he’s not Jesus and some are vegetarian

What’s all this faux optimism based on?

It’s not faux, it’s not playing to the crowd on here, it’s genuine

It’s based on what I’ve seen, not what I fear – some fantastic performances, progressing against az and the performance at a full ibrox on Sunday.

At the very early stages of this team the progress is very encouraging. We do t look like we’ll struggle to beat the poorer Scottish teams, we look like scoring against the better ones

  7. Have we signed the Greek striker yet?

  8. I don’t know anyone who thought it would have been a good idea to sell Edouard when 10iar was looming. He was the one player we all thought was essential to keep.

Neil Lennon said after Ferencvaros that there were players who didn’t want to be here and it’d be better if they went.

I feel a bit for Lennon and the board here because they really were in a “damned if you do…” situation in terms of keeping/selling stars in our 10IAR season but I wonder whether if Lennon had his time again, he would’ve shifted Eddie for Toney and maybe cashed in on Ntcham.

What debate, ………. where can we join?

This is an endemic societal problem that wasn’t away, before during or after Kafflik Schools were granted through parliament.

“ What school did you go to son? “ bigotry will always be here in Scotland. The majority are back ‘winning’ wrecking spitting fighting and manifesting themselves, as Sevco marchers.

Nicola Sturgeon missed George Square (1 ) denounced them on George Square (2) and will need to denounce them much harder if they keep on winning.

There were no marchers at the Division Two play offs or the Petrofac Cup final, the marches are triumphalist superior and racist .

If anybody gets in the way they’ll be dead, they are mere Monday morning soundbites with racism very slowly catching up on Sevco Scotland.

  12. Between now and the end of September, before we play Aberdeen at Pittodrie, we play Ross Coubty, Raith Rovers, Livingston and Dundee United. You’d hope MCarthy, Jamesie and must importantly Julien will all be fit by then.

If we don’t win all those four games I’ll temper my optimism but if we can get there with those three fit I’d be confident we could see out a more difficult October still right up there with the Huns, assuming they don’t falter

Both you and me don’t know what’s going to happen, those that are content are basing their optimism on a lot of ifs, we lost to Hearts (newly promoted) AZ (though we gifted them both goals) and Der Hun, Tommy Burns team gave us all a lot of optimism, still didn’t win the league. We’re all basing whatever review on ifs, better quality squad helps my ifs.

To compete in all competitions we don’t have anywhere near enough good players esp defenders, we’d get lucky in the cups but Europa and the league I think were way short, I’m all in on the Ange train but we’re not doing all we can, and that’s what Dom said he would.

  21. I got a start as an apprentice Electrician with a company called Gibson & Gould, the owner was the brother-in-law of John Lawrence, then MD of Rangers 2012 IL and most definitely a “what school did you go to” employer. As some people on here know my secondary school was Bellarmine Sen. Sec., an RC school. so, on the application form there wasn’t a “St.” to be found. The first day I started, a Monday, the Electricians and apprentices were all gathered to see where their jobs would be, and the conversation got round to the footie, this was 1971 and as you know Celtic was running riot. Being the new guy a journeyman asked me where I stood at Ibrox, I looked at him in bewilderment, as yet I had no idea about the employment criteria :)), and told him of my love of the Glasgow Celtic, well the place went so quiet, there must have been about 30 people in the place, and jaws were open aghast and dropped. Everyone hurried to the 3 foremen in their office to find out why there was Fenian in the workshop, of course, the 3 Foremen couldn’t believe it either and went straight to the manager’s office!

I was amazed to be allowed to continue, but things were never quite the same and only about 3 people ever spoke to me. I left after about 6 months, but I had some great, great, Monday mornings sitting waiting on everyone to come in, don’t think looked forward to it though! :))

Heard a clip of uncle Tim Devine there.

His view appears to be that anti Irish racism and anti catholic attitudes are not a Scottish problem but purely associated with the club(s) playing out of ibrox.

I would have to disagree with him there.

    ……….

Tom refers to parity in occupation to demonstrate that anti irish racism is no longer an issue for the irish in scotland and that one specific football club is where this manifest. He deals in facts he tells us. His facts are based on numbers. Economic parity across ethnicity means we are equal. I am a young 44 years old and have throughout my life had people ask what foot I kick with, what school I attended, what team I support to place me. I have been called a taig, terrier, fenian and been subject to racism in various sphere of my life.

One must have a very narrow perspective if they think occupational parity and economy means equality. Our race may not determine how well we do in our society (i am not so sure) but it can impact greatly on our sense of worth and where we fit in the world we inhabit. Lots of Irish cathloics tolerate hatred as part of being who we are.

Tom may be right that irish folk have achieved economic parity with others. He may be right that one club has a real issue with anit-Irish racism and he may be right that it needs to be addressed.

However, sevco simply offer and environment in with the racists feel empowered and emboldened to share their racism with the wider world. We still have to accept more orange walks than anywhere in the uk. Orange walks are anti-irish catholic walks. Would such an organisation be allowed to have the volume of walks if any other minority group was the victim? Not a chance in hell would they.

My lived experience tells me anti-irish catholic hate is thriving in scotland but you cant capture it in Tom’s evidence cause I am a middle earner.

I remember that period as when NL threw the players under a bus, that was the beginning of the end for Neil,

even supposing he had followed thru, personally I don’t think it would have changed a thing, there was too much mayhem going on at the time, but I agree now with the benefit of hindsight it would have been the smart thing to do.
