Back to Celtic Park, CQN prediction from February on Castore deal

350

News that fans could be able to attend games from the middle of next month is very welcome.  Lots can happen between now and then but Celtic Park with a reduced capacity is better than an empty Celtic Park.

For those attending, the process of gaining entry to the ground will feel onerous; more like being allowed onto a flight than into a stadium.  A trial-run next week against Motherwell, even if only for 1,000 of us, will be useful to check processes before more significant numbers arrive.

On 20 February this year, a day after Newco advertised on their website for a kit partner, I told you production runs for replica football kit were such, that getting a deal done and shirts on shelves for this season in any volume was impossible.  I wrote, “manufacturing slots are booked in March or early April.  These are high volume items, production cannot be arrange doff the cuff.

“Multi-million pound contracts with any serious manufacturer will require scoping and due diligence, this could take weeks, if not longer.”

There are a small number of manufacturing facilities in the world that can produce these garments in volume, the major brands all use them and production slots are booked – to the minute – months out.

When Newco and Castore announced their deal in May and promised to ship in August, two possibilities occurred to me: I was wrong, or they were both flying by the seat of their threadbare pants.

Yesterday, the kit supplier apologised for adding Castore and Newco logos to school sweatshirts (busted as they had not gone to the trouble of changing details on the washing label).  They also apologised for shipping top quality replica tops from China to some fans, when they intended to only ship inferior kit, manufactured at a location in Turkey.  Yes, really.

Fans are now comparing shirts with a similar quality to any other replica football top, and something that costs the same as any other replica top, but is a very inferior product.

Getting things right in football costs money, takes time and experience.  If you think you can breeze into this industry, bang a few heads together and deliver a world-class deal, you have world-class arrogance.

Newco’s commercial director, James Bisgrove, was less than a year in the job when he put an email address on the club website asking kit suppliers to get in touch.  To be fair to him, it was a terrible position to be in, but he signed a deal without the scoping and due diligence that would prevent fans suffering this debacle.  He does not have the experience required to do the job.

In February, before Castore were even a glint in the Newco eye, I wrote that their new kit deal, “will be a poor contract and it will perform badly for all concerned.”  But all of us who have been paying attention for the last 8 years (and the 12 before) knew that.

  1. Excellent story by TT at 10:43 pm on Thursday 20th in the last Ferencvaros thread – really enjoyed it, thanks.

His nicknames + abbreviations can be a tad difficult to follow. I think the “Galloping Major”, AKA “one footed stocky inside left” is Ferenc Puskas; the outlanders are the England soccer team; the dike-pluggers are the Dutch who “re-discovered” total football only to be undone by who else but the Germans in the 70s.

I think most of you on here will be too young to remember much of this – I hope so anyway!!

How much of this article was written by you?

And how much was written for you?

Reads like a pre-pack from the club’s commercial office.

Interesting but more about them than us.

Not as if we don’t have issues to discuss.

    Lazy journalism?

Sounds like the Castore deal is a bit of a stitch-up and is coming apart at the seams. Certainly a lot of unravelling going on in the hun forums.

  5. Henrik Larsson to join backroom team at Barcelona?

I’m betting he’s glad he never got that job at er Southend United

  6. Madmitch and JHB,

I cant let your Britnat propaganda pass. You conflate the SNPs record in government with Scottish independence. You also conflate the Lanarkshire Refereees Association and their Masonic leanings with the governance of Scotland. You should look carefully at your fellow unionist travellers.

For the record, you are sliding with the tories, red and blue versions and the Libs, all great friends of Celtic fc and the Irish diaspora in Scotland. You really want to be ” better together: with the lodge brothers?

The country we seek on Independence is not xenophobic a la Trump or rule Britannia. It is a welcoming, friendly and progressive force for good. You see that Brexit will lead to UK being more like USA. You want to impose that on us when we have a golden opportunity to reject that jingoistic tripe?

Britnats are panicking because Indy is 55% in the polls and rising. Another wee reminder; it wasn’t the SNP who gave us the butchers apron,, who founded the bigoted starlet in Ireland, who has anti Catholic sections in its constitution and who we know hates most things we stand for. The majority in Scotland now are not anti Catholic bigots. The OO is regarded with contempt and horror by the vast majority of Scots. The only organisation scared of them is Sevco, who need to keep them inside to buy their tat.

The Tory party despise them but need them as muscle to disrupt peaceful demonstrations which they dont like. The rest of the world is willing us on to ditch UK and take our place in the family of nations. It’s normal for nations to self determine their futures. Why do you want us to be subservient to old Etonians and other arse lickers?

    Rant over.

  7. I honestly couldn’t care less about Castore. Celtic supporters falling over themselves like it’s the best thing ever having just paid £666 to watch games in the house. Embarrassing.

  8. MADMITCH on 21ST AUGUST 2020 1:32 PM

I don’t deny that their are a lot of potential pitfalls and it wouldn’t have been my first choice… but the Tories with all their sleaze, corruption and appalling handling of the pandemic are still ahead in the polls.

In my view England is going to move even further to the right – don’t expect any Brexiter to apologise when the shit hits the fan, instead they will become even more racist and small minded (and probably blame the EU for their own stupidity.)

It may well be that Scotland will follow suit but there’s a chance something better may come out of it and that’s the best offer on the table.

So we may have some fans at Paradise soon. Thank you Nicola.

In Scotland a very vital daily update on Covid 19 is now turning into grandstanding. How on earth did you fill your time every day pre Covid briefings.

It’s blatantly obvious that more testing = more positive cases. Just how many of the population are asymptomatic? I would wager quite a lot.

The real headline is that there are no persons being hospitalised and no Covid 19 related deaths for circa 1 month.

Imo and I’m not medically qualified, we now need to open society or lock ourselves away for the rest of our lives as we wreck the economy and exacerbate mental health issues.

We follow the science they say: Well the figures don’t equate to justifying lockdown or draconian state intervention. Be wary of giving our freedom away as it will be very difficult to retract the additional powers.

For whatever reason, more people are dying of pneumonia, the cold or flu.

The actions now are not proportionate.

Hello again all you young rebels.

Comp.probs have restricted my input the last few days, weeks, can’t

do much about it until we can get out of lockdown.

Temporary fix at the moment, but thank you Big jimmy and David66

for your mention about my non participation.

Loving how we are getting our ducks in row, regards signings, big Duffy

fits the criteria, another similar type midfield cruncher and I’m happy,

although young Taylor has impressed me? think a big Tommy Gemmell

    type would impress me more.

Now for the controversial part of my post.

And I know it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the recent posts as regards

Kieran Tierney, but I’ll take all the flak you can direct my way when I say

” never a legend in my mind ” wonderful player, yes, did he get brutalised

    in the SPL. yes.

Did Jinky? Yes, Did Lemon ? yes.

Did they leave for a bigger club? and more money?

    Feck no.

Will answer the usual brickbats when I get out of lockdown. 8-))

  16. some non footie info from Ireland seeing as we are on politics today

Kildare staying in lockdown for at least another 2 weeks. No pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, can’t travel out the county.

whole country now can’t have any gatherings, weddings, parties etc til Sep 18

Can’t watch kids at GAA games etc

81 of the parliamentary Tories (FG and FF) went off a day after the new rules to Connemara for an Oireachtas (parliament) Golf Society shindig

Minister for Agriculture was there and resigned (in job for a month after last guy was sacked after a week).

Leas-Cathaoirleach (deputy chair) of the Seanad (senate) was there and now resigned.

Commissioner to EU was there and so far hasn’t resigned(he was told it was OK by hotel)

Head of the Courts so far hasn’t resigned (didnae know there was going to be a dinner)

Interesting that Labour, Sinn Fein and the smaller Socialist parties were not there (principles? don’t play golf? not really a golf club but an old school tie /bullingdon/masonic style club?). Greens don’t seem to have been there either (part of govt); probably hugging trees

Latest i heard was that they claimed to have slit the 81 between 2 rooms but it was really a last minute partition (still breaks the rules as all parties were to be cancelled). Looks like they all tried to pull a fast one in the age of smart phones

New govt only in 5 minutes and we have had 3 resignations and roll back of lock down

Much more interesting than Scotland right now😜

  17. mm

    no worries mm

there is no fear in meeting a Celtic fan.

patience.take your time.its an open offer.

You’ll never know my vote even if we do meet.

me and the ballot.i mean apart from annoying you it means also I balk at the romantic socialist family stuff with honesty.
