Back to the Future, when Celtic needed a fan to write a big cheque

1060

It was Back to the Future on Saturday afternoon, listening to Aberdeen rescue a point against Dundee was more like 1985 than 2015.  TV highlights suggest Aberdeen pounded Dundee, but three excellent goals were enough for the visitors to set the stage for Celtic to return to the top of the league against Motherwell on Wednesday.

Aberdeen have been imperious in recent months.  Incredibly, apart from Dundee and Celtic, they have failed to keep a clean sheet only once (at drubbing at Hamilton) since September.  That’s title challenging form in any language.

This run is unlikely to endure as the vagaries of form and fortune catch them up, but it appears our long wait for a notional title rival looks to be over.  Which is good.

Any business with operating expenses in the region of £33m a year, which is £2.75m a month or just over £600k a week, that had to borrow £500k in the first week of the month in order to pay an unexpected tax bill of the same magnitude, will by now be in urgent need of funds to pay rates, other tax liabilities, electricity and gas (no matter how little they used on Friday), while wages day is approaching.  And remember, those gardens don’t ‘duty’ themselves.

Newco Rangers will need a loan, or to sell a player for cash, to avoid imminently slipping into insolvency.  If Dave King is confident about carrying shareholders at a March EGM, and has the resources, he should loan the club money to get them through the next two months, no strings attached.  A bit like John Keane did for Celtic in 1994.  With insolvency looming, Keane, currently a Celtic director, but at the time an agitator for boardroom change, wrote a seven figure cheque, no strings attached, to pay-down Celtic’s overdraft, as the Bank of Scotland threatened to call in administrators.

Anything less than this is playing into the hands of Mike Ashley.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance is on Friday 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  The focus of an excellent night’s entertainment will be funding the construction of a kitchen at Chibwata Primary School in Malawi, for Mary’s Meals.

Speaking of Gough, did you watch Kompany giving away a penalty yesterday for doing exactly what Gough built his career on?

Possibly the stupidest idea I’ve heard all day.

    —————————————————————-

Celtic is a traditional club. We had (and thankfully still have) a long standing tradition of flying the Irish tricolour over CP and we stood up to the SFA bullying and indimidatory tactics when they tried to force us to remove it.

Why is therefore stupid to maintain the tradition of presenting the captain of this new club with a pennant when we play them for the first time?

Can’t fault Denayer and VVD for improving their future, sorry to see them leave. Guidetti though was “rescued” by Celtic from a lapsed career…..I think he should sign on with us for two or three years.

At least none of them are in the category of Laim Miller, who we developed and didn’t receive a penny for him. He ruined his career.

I’m sure I read recently, possibly on Twitter, that someone had contacted Daryll Broadfoot (yes, him) in his current role as Head of Communications at the SFA regarding the ‘fit and proper persons test’ and he (Broadfoot) stated there was no such test.

Not another case of the SFA not knowing their own rules surely?

I totally agree with you about the stupidity of presenting Sevco with a pennsnt when we meet them for the first time. This is Speirs in sleekit mode trying to introduce mischief into a game that will already have a highly charged atmosphere. If any trouble ensues over this gesture eg., McCulloch refusing to accept it from Scott Brown and the Sevcoites reacting badly then Sleekit Speirs would be the first to lay the blame at Celtic’s door for any trouble just as he sleekily laid the blame at Neil Lennon’s door after incident with the other Sleekit fella during the Shame Game when ‘the balance of probability’ told everyone that Neil’s smiling demeanour changed once Sleekit McCoist whispered in his ear. Speirs is a viper – not to be trusted. Can anyone tell me if Celtic presented a pennant to Gretna when we met them for the first time or Livingston?

Hope the SFA take this into account as well….

Dave King’s dream of owning Rangers could be scuppered by the South African government.

A fresh investigation into King’s tax affairs has been ordered by his adopted country.

A government probe into the South African Revenue Services has uncovered a rogue unit within its ranks which illegally spied on targets.

Now every tax settlement case for the past 10 years is to be reinvestigated – with King’s reportedly at the top of the list. Last year King struck a deal with SARS, paying back £44m of the £149m the tax man insisted he owed. That could now be reversed.

Money laundering and tax evasion charges against King were dropped as part of the settlement.

But the report issued after the probe into SARS’ operations said: “There appears to be serious concerns about whether settlements concluded with taxpayers who were the subject of investigation were validly and properly concluded.

“SARS should conduct a forensic investigation into all the settlements concluded with taxpayers that had been under investigation since 2005.”
