Bankier, Livingston and most plural club in UK

485

I didn’t see Ian Bankier’s performance today, but I watched his predecessor John Reid a few times. John wasn’t liked by a significant body of the support, largely for professional reasons (his role in government), but when he got on his feet to address Celtic supporters, he had an intuitive feel for what to say. No one ever needed to script him.

Ian Livingston has received a lot of criticism since voting with the government in the recent Tax Credits bill. I’d heard the nature of some of what was written online included reference to his background – appalling, without question. Nor would it surprise you or me, we’ve been online long enough to see just about everything, including those who troll others on account of their background or identity. Often with Celtic-related targets.

We are a plural club, with people from Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and for all I know, other backgrounds, on our board, all these and more in our dressing room, and among our support. I’m proud of this. We are often caricatured as an exclusively Irish-diaspora club but few in the UK can claim such an ethnic panorama.

A club of immigrants founded 127 years ago has continued to attract new immigrants ever since.  It’s worthwhile reminding ourselves of this, it should continue to be a part of our forward strategy.  What correlates with this is that anyone with a prejudice will find a target at Celtic – such is the diversity of our club. Celtic fans, players and officials have been targets like this for a very long time.

Was Ian Livingston right to vote with the government on Tax Credits? No. I haven’t considered the policy’s economic merits (first pass suggested it had none) but I believe his voice should have been raised against the policy. The expectations of being a representative of Celtic, not just a board member, are weighty.

Ian Bankier could have read all inappropriate online comment referring to Ian Livingston’s background immediately before today’s AGM, but that forum was not the place to mark anyone’s card. The intuitive feel John Reid had on these occasions was missing today. Go complain about such comment to the appropriate authorities, or to whatever online facilities hosted the comments, tell Ian Livingston ‘You’ll never walk alone’ in a private moment, but address shareholders and Celtic fans on matters appropriate to them.

Who do Celtic pay a living wage to? You mention the AGM. Celtic admitted their shame. Bankier said it’s not in the club’s best interests to pay it.

I can only see it as the “old firm agenda” out of control.

The supporters who fund the club, don’t matter anymore.

    The whole scenario sickens me.

To think of the sheer joy Celtic have brought us.

It brings tears to the eyes, to see these nasty wee businessmen poison the club.

Are you talking about this years AGM? The one where it was confirmed that it wasn’t in the interests of the club to pay it? Where the majority in the room were outnumbered by the faceless shareholder nominees??

Is the Celtic Trust a Political pressure group or Celtic supporters ?…..I have my doubts about them being Celtic supporters, since they seem to major in non-football orientated controversy, at every AGM ….as far as I’m concerned they are a bunch of political activists who should head for speaker’s corner if they want to share their political views …….or they could always join their local PTA if they have so much time on their hands ……and they seem to think they represent all Celtic supporters …. Pathetic really, I’m afraid……. – See more at: http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/agm-ahead/comment-page-24/#comment-2722041

I’m on the Celtic Trust committee. We speak only for ourselves or the Celtic supporters who seek our support or advice.

Meanwhile you sycophantically sit in your heated seat every home game, increasingly losing touch with the feelings of the majority of the support.

You’re attempts at criticising genuine Celtic supporters is sickening.

  5. Now everyone of us Celtic supporters are intensely proud of being founded to feed the poor of the East end but what is conveniently forgotten is that as soon as Brother Walfrid left some of the board members pounced and converted the “club” into a “company”.

Rapacious capitalist b’stard that they were they ran the club as there own family piggy bank until they ran it into a financial wall in 1994.

Now we have a board that have not spent like rangers did, to the derision of some. They do not to a man contain one convicted criminal, which annoys some. They have never defaulted on a single debt, to the horror of all their enemies, but to read this forum you would think the Celtic Board were the greatest evil that have ever darkened our door.

I have my own personal political opinions I do not impose them on anyone else and do not insist that only those who hold Mt opinions be heard.

  6. Incredible that we still have people, including Paul, who claim that Celtic are paying a LW.

    Bloody read will you please.

  7. Ian bankier is a finance guy , no experience in PR spin. However our loveable rouge peter is the spin master

Now if I was a CEO who had overseen disasters on park against 3rd rate European opposition for a 2nd year in a row due poor planning and scouting and I was about to face the fans at the AGM, how do I spin out of it

Ahh step forward the chairman of the PLC with his speech and comments all prevetted by the PR department

Carlsberg don’t to AGM’s. But if they did this viewed by PL was proberary the best AGM @@@@@@@

  9. You know what we’re Champions League at? In fact, World Class??

Hanging out our dirty washing in public!!

As a Roman Catholic of some 63 years, I’ve been born and brought up in the West of Scotland.. the most bigoted and anti Catholic region in the World.. YES, ON A PAR WITH NORTHERN IRELAND, and comparable with the most oppressed minority states in the middle east and across the World.

I’ve suffered industrial discrimination, educational discrimination, I’m subjected to ridicule in the media in the workplace.. and yet, I am so proud to support a Club with so many high moral standards and such a high ethical ethos, despite the establishment.. And what do we have within us?? Celtic ‘Followers’ who expose our weaknesses and give ammunition to those who have sought to destroy us from the day we were born.

The orange order, the masonic order, the national union of journalists, the conservative party would never turn on themselves.. they take an oath.

Yet we cannot wait to publish our democratic differences of opinion, we cannot wait to expose our weaknesses, to give our enemies ammunition, to let the world think we are at war.. we are not united we are not Celtic supporters.

We are at the crossroads of the history of our national sport, Lose against the corrupt establishment, and football in this country is dead in 2016. Finished.. an amateur league run by the masonic order for the benefit of themselves.. and what did we do about it?? fought amongst ourselves.!!

If the masons win this battle, Celtic, Scottish football and us, are finished.

Make no mistake, our enemy is formidable.

  10. Lord Livingstone of Parkhead

Never mind about the fact that he drapes himself in ermine and immerses himself in ‘that other place’ which is a cesspit for child molesters, scroungers and bullingdon berties who see it as their birthright to inflict their antiquated sense of entitlement on the plebs. An untouchable den of sexual and moral depravity. We cant be upset by that of course, whatever your sensibilities it matters not a jot, even if he rubs shoulders (I hope its just shoulders) with the likes of Lord Janner because of course…………anyone can support Celtic!

    But

Part of a directors remit is to protect the shareholders.

If you are a director of a football club that would mean maximising revenue through such things as maintaining or even increasing season ticket numbers.

Now if your other job as a Tory member of Government is to bring down the deficit through austerity then you have to be pro active in things like cutting family tax credits.

This doesn’t square. You attack the same people who make up the bulk of the season ticket fodder. It’s a conflict of interests.

    Pure and simple

  14. Quick question.

How do you get onto the hallowed Celtic Board?

Does someone resign and the other board members think…

…*feck we need a replacement, get thingumy on the phone…*

You see, I’ve never seen these type of jobs advertised anywhere!!!!

So how does, in this instance, Celtic displace good old TCL (Tax Credits Livingstone) and find a suitable candidate to further keep one in ones place.

What he did was vote for his own party’s proposal, which if either a majority of Scots had voted for independence, or a majority of UK citizens had not voted for the Conservatives would not have been put before the second, unelected chamber of Parliament, or if it had then would not have bothered Scotland. That as far as my understanding of Democracy does not constitute imposing his views on anyone.

    Hamiltontim

My point is that too many on here seem to believe that the board of Celtic are the enemy. The media in Scotland are no friends of Celtic. The SNP, and their reprehensible act, are no friends of Celtic. Police Scotland are no friends of Celtic.

The Celtic I support have never been the members of the board, they have been the team on the park. However my personal political beliefs have never been defined by Celtic and I do not project them onto Celtic.

I do not hold Celtic to a higher standard of behaviour than I am prepared to accept from the rest of my life.

Celtic is a very special part of my life but I do not demand they act as my moral compass, that is my job.

It may be unfashionable to say it but as a Celtic supporter I am quite content at the moment.

I was reading Max Hastings book “All Hell let loose” and in his chapter about neutrals he was quite vitriolic about Irish Neutrality during WWII but goes on to list the “help” other non belligerent countries like Sweden and Switzerland gave the Nazis right up to the end of the war with a fairly matter of fact tone. As I was reading the passage I thought ” Ah Ha Macjay is Max Hastings!” :-)

That was the point of my post earlier. There is no acid test for Celtic supporters.

We have no right to classify an other Celtic fan as either genuine or not.

There’s no religious, political, national or other test.

Patience is indeed a Virtue, more so than ever now, when we are being targeted for being a Club that Lives within its means. WTF!!!

We have to build a team from our OWN youths. That needs lots of patience.
