Beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva for Champions League football

822

Celtic will face Israelis Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League playoff round later this month, with the first leg due to take place at Celtic Park.

Hapoel, carrying a Uefa coefficient of 4, eliminated Olympiakos, coefficient: 70, in the last round – a bigger shock than Dundalk’s win over BATE.  They put on two backs-to-the-wall performances, drawing the first leg in Greece 0-0 before winning the return 1-0.  In the earlier round they shot the Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova, winning 3-2 in Israel before securing another 0-0 away.

The positives: the Israeli league hasn’t started yet, so Hapoel will be no further into their season’s preparations than Celtic.  It also looks like the play on grass.

In recent seasons Celtic have found new and innovative ways to bow out at this stage but we know what’s required and will be strong favourites to progress.

Bring it on.

I wasn’t impressed at what I was watching. When Astana equalised my gut feeling was that we were heading out. It seemed to be shared by many around me.

The joyous scenes at the end were a mixture of delight and relief. It could easily have gone the other way. An injury time winner sure puts a gloss on things.

I gulped when they read out a midfield of Brown, Forrest and Armstrong. I reckoned the first while brave lacks the quality for this level and the other two lack his bravery to start with as well as the quality. To be fair Broony worked really hard as did Forrest to a lesser extent. Personally, I wouldn’t have any of them in my Celtic team though going forward.

If BR hadn’t brought Dembele on when he did we’d probably be waiting to play a EL play off match.

Bet you’re sorry you asked now!

    Not at all.

I was reasonably confident throughout the game that we would prevail. This was based on the very simple belief that we were proving ourselves to be the better side and , in my experience, the better side USUALLY wins.

I think your experience is more reflective of the majority of Celtic fans than is my own. Maybe I am less passionate but I do remain fairly calm in most games as we are the better side in most games.

I totally accept your differing point of view of the game, though,

‘Because a significant proportion of the Scottish people still harbour anti Irish and anti Catholic feelings.’

Sorry for the delay, just back in.

Sorry to read of your belief that such a significant proportion of the Scottish population harbour such sectarian feelings. Living in the south of Ireland there is virtually no sectarianism and most people of all faiths and of no faith would be absolutely appalled at your depressing description of Scotland.

Maybe progress could be made if some people considered the commitment Ireland has demonstrated to the international community. Since 1960, 86 Irish soldiers have been killed in the service of the United Nations in a number of countries the Congo, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and Chad being example. The Irish Naval Service has played a prominent role in the rescue of refugees in the Mediterranean.

Since 1997 huge strides have been made I have a few friends who are committed Unionists but who come to Dublin each year to watch the rugby in a friendly environment. Membership of sectarian organisations is reducing rapidly.

Perhaps in due course the significant proportion of the population in Scotland will realise that there really is much more to life in the 21st century and sectarian prejudice based on fear and insecurity are their real enemy.

Did you catch his recent gig in Glasgow? Unfortunately I was in Lake Garda at the time.

  17. Good evening, well we have been handed a decent draw. That will also be the sentiment within the Happoel dressing room, so we must get the job done at Celtic Park.

A small compact stadium , fanatical support and very warm weather awaits us on the 23rd August. I hope Roberts is fit for the home leg although any hamstring pull can be at least a two week lay off..

Looking forward to Sunday, the Hertz will be well fired up and will be as physical as ever.

  18. Tomorrow the fun begins. The smsm will go into Old firm overdrive. Tanner and co on Sky will have declared servo champions in waiting. Our custodians will have no option but to issue a statement on the status of the new club.
