Beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva for Champions League football

822

Celtic will face Israelis Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League playoff round later this month, with the first leg due to take place at Celtic Park.

Hapoel, carrying a Uefa coefficient of 4, eliminated Olympiakos, coefficient: 70, in the last round – a bigger shock than Dundalk’s win over BATE.  They put on two backs-to-the-wall performances, drawing the first leg in Greece 0-0 before winning the return 1-0.  In the earlier round they shot the Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova, winning 3-2 in Israel before securing another 0-0 away.

The positives: the Israeli league hasn’t started yet, so Hapoel will be no further into their season’s preparations than Celtic.  It also looks like the play on grass.

In recent seasons Celtic have found new and innovative ways to bow out at this stage but we know what’s required and will be strong favourites to progress.

Bring it on.

  1. HEADTHEBALL Oh dear, it didn’t take long for all the old political claptrap to kick off. No doubt Hapoel Beer Sheva Quick News is awash with comments on the six counties issue, Brexit and the Indy debate. I wonder if they really give a sh*t. :-)

    ————————————————-

The 6 counties and Palestine/ Gaza in Zionist Israel are not comparable.

There are thousands of Jewish people across the globe, including Rabbi’s, academics and so on who are appalled at the Zionist Apartheid state and its murderous treatment of Palestinians.

That Celtic supporters agree with that, that they have a mindset beyond the bar and the pitch, does not make them part of the ‘political claptrap’.

Rather, it does show that they are interested, knowledgeable enough and have the heart to commit to injustices near or afar. Not a crime in my book.

    You said….

“The plan was agreed that Neil Lennon would stay for another season and Ronny Deila would be his assistant. Unfortunately Neil went back on his word to chase riches down south.”

Can you post a link to this, or is it just your opinion ?

  3. Liam Henderson deserve his chance, I’m sure Sunday against Hearts, he should at least be in the Squad. I feel he is better than Armstrong. whom I was hoping to be a success at Celtic. Also Mcgregor.who falls into that category.

  4. Timaloy29 all those words and yet appointing Ronny and the attendant failures where indeed the boards fault. They didn’t need to appoint Ronny. There was no gun to their head. But he was cheap and easily manipulated and results do t really matter to the board as long as they get their juicy sweet bonuses.

Asking if we have signed anyone is not the same thing as saying spend spend spend. But there you go again timaloy29 adding bits in and coming up with your own conclusions.

    ‘UEFA say flying Tricolour- OK

UEFA say flying Palestine flag in stadium protest – not OK’

    ###

UEFA ruled, after the event, that flying a Palestinian flag was a political act.

So far as I’ aware they have never issued any pronouncement about the Irish Tricolour.

Their justification for singling out the Palestinian flag in this way was ‘because the conflict with Israeli forces in the region is still ongoing’.

The question therefore is whether UEFA could again, after the event, deem that the flying of the Irish Tricolour is a political act. They might decide to take the view that the conflict with the British forces is till ongoing. It seems clear that the British security forces are certainly of that view.

So, to sum up, flying an Irish Tricolour at a UEFA game at CP carries the risk of punishment from UEFA.

So anyone demanding that no Palestinian flags be flown should have the courage of their convictions and demand also that no Irish Tricolours be flown.

Riiight so complaining about a lack of signings is nothing to do with spending money.

Once again, I have said twice now that Ronny’s appointment was an error by the board. Do you want me to say it a third time? I’ve never said it wasn’t a success.

They needed to appoint somebody and they didn’t have a lot time to do so. There is a level of risk in any appointment and I don’t think there was a great lists of candidates.

I accept that appointing a young manager who has just won a title on less resources than his competitors would have been impressive on a CV. The alternatives like Roy Keane also had their own risks attached.

People make mistakes but I’m happy with most of Desmond’s appointments. The club have the right man in charge and I am optimistic about what the season brings.

The point I was making was that we do NOT seem to have been consistent over our history to the political standpoint some demand of our Club today. We were NOT, imo, founded by a socialist but by a Christian.

Heard that Milek from Ajax is going to Napoli for 30 million. An absolutely batshit crazy fee.

  13. Timalloy I would be happy to get a great player who is out of contract. It is you who is making assumptions so stop it.

As for not having a lot of time it is the boards job to plan and have contingencies. They failed in that regard too.

  20. The Lost Innocence of the start of the season

The warming glow of the first Saturday of the season, is now a hope rather than a given, Friday, Sunday or Monday, tv decides, new kit on your back, what one? Home, away or brash third? the excitement of the unknown, replaced with the known, minds already made up on signings and future outcomes, with friendlies viewed with unjustified merit.

No longer the biggest game of the summer, that’s the trips to Scandinavia or Azerbaijan as UEFA make us dance for our supper, hours of office chatter already quietly fluttered away, hunched around desks while getting paid.

The thrill of the season start, lost to the generation of endless coverage, streaming the hope of the unknown away, killing with pixels that the new player running out the tunnel, on the first day, will deliver victories in the glorious new kit. I once had that innocence and I’m the lucky one.

  25. One important thing to keep in mind if choosing sides in the Israel/Palestine conflict is that Israel uses it’s weapons to protect it’s people whilst Palestine uses it’s people to protect it’s weapons.

IE: Firing rockets/mortars from atop schools and hospitals.

I have not taken sides however I feel for the people of Israel who can’t go out for an evening without fear of being blown up. Imagine it was Glasgow..??
