Beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva for Champions League football

822

Celtic will face Israelis Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League playoff round later this month, with the first leg due to take place at Celtic Park.

Hapoel, carrying a Uefa coefficient of 4, eliminated Olympiakos, coefficient: 70, in the last round – a bigger shock than Dundalk’s win over BATE.  They put on two backs-to-the-wall performances, drawing the first leg in Greece 0-0 before winning the return 1-0.  In the earlier round they shot the Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova, winning 3-2 in Israel before securing another 0-0 away.

The positives: the Israeli league hasn’t started yet, so Hapoel will be no further into their season’s preparations than Celtic.  It also looks like the play on grass.

In recent seasons Celtic have found new and innovative ways to bow out at this stage but we know what’s required and will be strong favourites to progress.

Bring it on.

  1. Imagine, Celtic play away in Israel against Hapoel Beer Sheva on August 23rd and some Celtic supporters view Palestinian flags.

August 23 is known as “1929 Massacres”. Arab demonstrations escalated and turned into attacks on Jewish people and destruction (mainly burning) Jewish property.

133 Jewish people were killed by the Arabs, 339 others were injured. On the other side 110 Arabs killed, 232 injured. Reports say the vast majority of the Arabs were killed, or wounded by the British forces who were trying to stop the riots.

Or, try to imagine Celtic play against Hapoel Beer Sheva in Glasgow and there we see many Palestinian flags. Then Celtic go to play in Israel.

Stupidity/Wisdom,Curage ? Make up yor mind.

  2. First post in several months due to a faulty laptop with sticky keys.

I’ll ignore the lack of distress flares that you all sent out.

Decent draw today. Although tempered by the fact that they have eliminated Olympiakos without conceding a goal. We would all be attempting an Efe triple somersault if Celtic did that!

From my vantage point in block 405 that was not very pretty on Wednesday. We got through by the slimmest of margins. Let’s hope they’re a step down from Astana and not a step up or we could be in big trouble – especially without wee Paddy. He is the one class act in our team.

  3. Zbyszek.

Thanks for the translated comments from Kazakhstan in the past two weeks. I really appreciated them.

Well done for sticking up for Legia, the other day on the blog, your comments were appropriate.

What a tie for your team v Dundalk. Enjoy!!!

Legia drew 0.0 ( 1.0) aggregate. How did you think you played over the two legs.

    Hail Hail.

  4. At a point in the second half against Astana, there was a fair bit of jeering from the Celtic support. The noise was similar to that made when a Celtic player is lying injured but the ref has not stopped the game. Such was not the case so I was left to conclude that those expressing displeasure were unhappy with Celtics performance at that stage of the game. This may have been that to which Brendan was referring when he spoke of our need for patience. Can anyone enlighten me to why the jeering was taking place? It was quite strange.

  5. Brendan Rodgers, Brendan Rodgers

You have come, but this League is a farce.

    So get ready, Brendan Rodgers

We’re about to take it up. . . with the SFA.

  6. Team v Hearts:

    Gordon

    Lustig Toure O`Connell Tierney

    Forrest Brown McGregor Armstrong

    Dembele Griffiths.

I typed the above with little expectation that Brendan will agree. I am not even sure that I agree with my selection!

  7. My friends in Celtic,

I can understand the emotion that some of our support have when we play an Israeli team.

But in my opinion we have to put Celtic first. We know we will be punished for anything that contravenes the governing body’s rules.

I’m not saying that their rules are correct, but nevertheless its their rules and we know we will be punished for breaking them; And we have history.

It is impossible to defend any supporters that will bring fines, ground closure or even a ban. We have high hopes for this season, why would any Celtic fan jeopardize that ?

In my opinion any Celic fans contemplating putting our club at risk should don :-

    White make up.

    A big red nose

    A multicoloured wig.

    Giant baggy trousers.

    Megalarge trainers.

    Hail, Hail to common sense.

  8. Hot Smoked

I’ll reply as everybody else is away watching all the Olympic cheats have their moment in the sun before they fail their drugs test.

If it was near the end we were trying to get Toure on but the ref wasn’t aware as he had his back to the technical area.

Either that or just cos we were pish for most of the night! (Wee smiley thing)

  9. Any so Celtic called fan displaying a Palestinian flag in Israel should be banned severly. It would be provocative and incredibly stupid. I hope the club warn all ticket holders in advance.

  10. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers:

“I came to Scottish football because of Glasgow Celtic, one of the great clubs of the world.

“If you are talking about big clubs, history, and fan base, talking about one of the leading clubs in the world, then I came to one of them.

“Every team provides a challenge and a different challenge. It will be tight, it will be the usual suspects up there, Aberdeen have done well, they are out of Europe now so that might give them more training time, Hearts have been about it and will have a strong squad.

“Rangers coming into the league will fancy that they can do well and there are other teams who can make it very difficult for you. So I am really looking forward to it.”

    ` coming into the league`. Not `returning`. Hmmm…

There were some grumblings and moaning when possession was conceded, poor choices made and unnessary risks taken in defensive positions. There was no jeering that I heard. I get what Rodgers is saying, I did say out loud that some fans needed to calm down.

  13. God bless the state and people of Israel

God protect the state and people of Israel

God assist the removal of the plank from the eye of the Israeli zealots in order that they may see the speck in their neighbours eye.

  14. Billy Bhoy

    Thanks for that.Makes sense.

Did you actually think we played badly? I thought we were pretty solid and, overall the performance was very professional and Broonie was superb.

  15. Lots of good, common sense comments about not doing stoooopid stuff at the return leg in the Negev. Leave the Palestinian flegs at home. Still the odd roaster or two trying to make their political “points”. They are entitled to their opinions but they have NO PLACE at our fitba matches.

  16. JIMMYNOTPAUL 8:13 PM

Thank you very much for your kind words. Legia are bit weaker this year. I don’t know who would win today over two legs – Celtic ,or Legia? We are not in the best possible form yet. We changed the coach six weeks ago. What’s interesting, we have Anderlecht last coach who got transfers all the way he put them on the list.

Dundalk was the best possible draw for us. It was probably the best draw for them too. I suppose the atmosphere on the streets and at the stadiums will be friendly.

” There were some grumblings and moaning when possession was conceded,”

I honestly believe our fans are too demanding. Even a very popular and consistent player , Kieran Tierney, is subject to moans when he makes a mistake. I understand why supporters behave in such a way but I do not agree with it when it is constant and shows little understanding of human frailty..

  20. Getting into the CL group stage is all that matters. We are ill equipped for the CL and will likely struggle but i’ll take it anytime over Thursday night EL matches and subsequent Sunday games.

Whilst some fans go over the top, I have no problem with the demands of the support. We are a high performance team, if the players aren’t doing it they better be thick skinned. It comes with the territory.

Right footer, usually played on left, used to be a super star kid picked up by Man City for big money when they hit the oil cash, things never worked out but he did marry the hot one from Corrie

    Thanks for update on Legia.

Yes I think the tie will be great for both Dundalk and Legia supporters.

The game will be played in Dublin which should mean easy access for all Irish and U.K based Legia supporters.

I imagine both sets of fans will enjoy each others company. The last qualifying round is usually nailbiting time, enjoy if you can. :-)))))

  30. There is a guy sits 3 rows back from me. I didn’t hear him in the first half when we were playing well. no encouragement no recognition. as soon as we started to struggle a bit it was screaming at the top of his voice. I would understand these guys better if they praised and criticised. but only Criticism gets on my goat and I started spending too much time turning round and wanting to punch the idiot. Of course as a pacifist these thoughts would only every remain thoughts.

Roberts on the right, Sinclair on the left…… Looks like we will have a couple of quick inventive wingers this season.

    High hopes.
