Beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva for Champions League football

822

Celtic will face Israelis Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League playoff round later this month, with the first leg due to take place at Celtic Park.

Hapoel, carrying a Uefa coefficient of 4, eliminated Olympiakos, coefficient: 70, in the last round – a bigger shock than Dundalk’s win over BATE.  They put on two backs-to-the-wall performances, drawing the first leg in Greece 0-0 before winning the return 1-0.  In the earlier round they shot the Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova, winning 3-2 in Israel before securing another 0-0 away.

The positives: the Israeli league hasn’t started yet, so Hapoel will be no further into their season’s preparations than Celtic.  It also looks like the play on grass.

In recent seasons Celtic have found new and innovative ways to bow out at this stage but we know what’s required and will be strong favourites to progress.

Bring it on.

It’s a funny old game, a few weeks ago it was Sviatchenko was the main man, much needed, future captain etc. Now I’m not sure he’ll actually get a game.

Have no fear, Erik is our vice captain and will be a first choice central defender, probably with Jozo, when fully fit again. At 24 and 22 years old, Celtic have paid out approaching £5m for the pair.

So be consistent and demand that Tricolours be banned as well not just Palestinian flags.

Flags are NOT the issue (for me. I just do not care about such puerile stuff) You appear to be like the march/don’t march panthers in Norn Irn. A thing of the past…..hopefully!!! Or should be.

A word of warning to fans going to the away game. Forget the Palestine flags or the idea of protest. If you think the Glesga polis are bad, the Israelis don’t f*** about. Witnessed an American Jew being badly beaten for showing support for Palestinians…

  7. ERNIE LYNCH & BURGHBHOY@this page.

Do you know why UEFA seeks to ban political protests at football matches?

Work it out for yourself – how long would it take for extreme organisations to infiltrate football matches and turn them into battlegrounds?

It would kill football – only nutters would attend matches, with real supporters and their families afraid to attend.

Please think these things through – politics is a very complex environment – football is an entertainment that we turn to, away from the stress of everyday life – are the many to be deprived of their passion and pleasure due the actions of a minority of zealots?

    You are being absurdly disingenuous.

You do realise that protest inside the ground only harms Celtic and does not help Palestinians one little bit.

They already know that some people in Scotland support them and some don’t.

What you are actually saying, is that protests inside or outside are futile……..except that one form hurts Celtic, the other helps nobody.

I’ll stop now before I get personal.

On what basis would flying a Palestinian flag hurt Celtic but flying a Tricolour would not?

Each is as much a political act as the other.

    So, be consistent.

If you want to ban people waving flags don’t discriminate. ban all flags.

“Now I would like to point out several flaws in your argument here.

Firstly failure on the field is the fault of the board. You said it yourself. They appointed the wrong manager. We failed. Ergo it’s the boards fault. This isn’t a difficult concept. You proved it yourself. ”

    _______

I said that the board could not be solely responsible. I didn’t say there weren’t responsible.

The board appointed a manager in good faith. It’s not an exact science and there have been successes and failures.

The plan was agreed that Neil Lennon would stay for another season and Ronny Deila would be his assistant. Unfortunately Neil went back on his word to chase riches down south. I don’t hold it against him because he has earned the right to do so and I’d have been happy to have him back this season.

Still, the board were put in a position to appoint somebody at short notice. They chose to give Ronny a chance after he had just won a title in Norway.

Ronny has had his moments at Celtic and made some positive contributions but the lack of basic defensive organisation in Europe cost us. Malmo and Inter Milan are two ties that stick in the mind where there was some good play but careless defending.

Like I said, the board got it wrong appointing Ronny. I say the board, but really it’s Desmond who decides. He’s appointed MON, Neil Lennon and Gordon Strachan who I believe were good appointments. Deila and Mowbray were failures.

I’m not here to defend the board from all criticism. I pointed out that Ronny was a mistake. The mistake was a decision made with some logic. He had won a title with limited resources in Norway and John Collins had been a successful coach with knowledge of Scottish football.

If you are looking for a board who never make an error I believe you will be looking for a long time. I doubt there are many teams who haven’t sacked a manager in the last 5 or so years.

I believe they have appointed the right guy this time round and that counts for something.

    _________

Moneyball has absolutely nothing to do with selling players. Don’t really know how many times I have to say it.

It was a method of identifying undervalued players in order to put the best possible team on the field.

I believe that the squad needs investment but I don’t believe it needs to be done this minute. As I’ve stated before, transfers are long-term investments and we shouldn’t rely on new players to win us a match before they’ve settled.

I’ll wait until the window closes to see how strong we are. We’ve signed some quality players at the end of transfer windows like Robbie Keane or John Guiddetti

there’s no point wasting breath on the flag issue. Some wee ‘ultra’ carried a banner saying ‘f*** UEFA’. That’s the intelligence we are dealing with. they care about being an ultra more than celtic,. Maybe they should read a history book

  22. ” Because the flying of Tricolours at CP is every bit a political act as flying Palestinian flags.”

    Oh no it`s not!

  23. Pleased with the draw, though there will be no complacency from anyone connected to the Hoops. Hopefully, no political protest, and a fair referee. Sympathised with the Sheep last night, though I had a wager on a poor Maribor side at 11/10. The referee had an absolute shocker and cheated the Sheep big time. Fulham have never lost at home to Newcastle and seem a good price tonight at 14/5. HH

Can u point to any post where I advocated political protest at the football.

My original point was a general point about how different our board is now to years ago.

I think it is sad that the pursuit of the pound prevents our board ( who supposedly represent us) from pursuing injustice be that in a football sense or otherwise.

Maybe I have expressed my opinion in a ham fisted manner but my main point was to highlight that in 1968 we refused to play Ferencvaros because that was the right thing to do.

Nowadays we have tolerated cheating on a grand scale for many years and our board says nowt

I’m angry and frustrated by it all

    Neganon… Is spot on…

In fairness to Lawwell he only took more than his entitlement as he is a fan and as such believed it was ok to take more than his due while at the same time underinvesting in the club and appointing a cheap Diddy manager- who was on a fraction of his own remuneration and was easily manipulated in to taking players recommended by his son Mark Lawwell. As I say – he only did it because he believed as a fan as well as CEO it was in the best interest of the Club…

  32. Have a good feeling about the Bhoy Sinclair.

I take it he will be played on the wing and Paddy on the other.

    Anybody know much about him?
