Beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva for Champions League football

822

Celtic will face Israelis Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League playoff round later this month, with the first leg due to take place at Celtic Park.

Hapoel, carrying a Uefa coefficient of 4, eliminated Olympiakos, coefficient: 70, in the last round – a bigger shock than Dundalk’s win over BATE.  They put on two backs-to-the-wall performances, drawing the first leg in Greece 0-0 before winning the return 1-0.  In the earlier round they shot the Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova, winning 3-2 in Israel before securing another 0-0 away.

The positives: the Israeli league hasn’t started yet, so Hapoel will be no further into their season’s preparations than Celtic.  It also looks like the play on grass.

In recent seasons Celtic have found new and innovative ways to bow out at this stage but we know what’s required and will be strong favourites to progress.

Bring it on.

  1. I know there’s plenty on here who share Neganon’s views here and I respect those views (I am critical of the board on certain issues)

However, some people can hold those views without consistently being negative, divisive and holier than thou.

It’s tiresome. Measuring the club’s success in money spent.

    Afternoon all,

first time posting in a long time, but reading today seems like the good feeling is back here (certain exceptions apart of course), so may as well strike while the iron is hot!

Pleased with the draw, will be difficult, but when are they not for us? Would have preferred home leg 2nd, but a 2-0 victory should stand us in good stead. Fingers crossed.

Another reason for posting again, was taking part in and enjoying the craic and very good company (once again) at the CQN gowf last week at Aberdour.

Brought back memories of why i used to enjoy reading and posting on CQN so much back in the day.

BTW, Rubicon, if you are lurking, just wanted to say was a pleasure to meet you and really enjoyed your company for those 18 holes and beyond last week. BJMac, nothing more needs said on that mucker.

CL Group stage qualification and scudding the zombies? what more can you ask for an upcoming season!

    HAIL! HAIL!

  3. I support the Palestinian cause, but if Celtic supporters wave PLO flags at the home game v Hapoel, there is a real danger of Celtic being kicked out of European competition.

The club has several previous convictions and heavy fines. If such an offence is committed in front of an Israeli side, be in no doubt as to what might happen. This is a football match. Leave your politics at the door.

Personally, we shouldn’t rush our transfer business for the play-off. We should be going with the squad we have.

I’ve long said that we should be leaving the new signings on the bench and focusing on the guys who have been here before and have good chemistry.

Cannot agree mate,a squad that was not good enough for Europa League last season, and beaten by a shite Sevco We need another 4 or 5 players fòr the first 11,BR should have been better backed IMO,the stockpiling of squad fillers is not his problem, it’s PLs HH

Who says I am measuring success in terms of money spent. Perhaps you haven’t noticed but for the. Last. Two years we haven’t qualified for the CL. That’s one of. My measures for success.

Getting put out of. The Scottish cup by a new club, utter humiliation. I judge success against. Things like that.

Transfer dealings are very important to gauge the level of ambition we have and for. Results ultimately on the pitch.

You, like many, are simply putting up tired old excuses for inaction and lack of ambition. Stating we could go out of business. Etc if we spend. It’s all rather silly.

But look, it’s been this way for over a decade on CQN. A decade in which we espouse domination but in real terms have continued to diminish. The speed of our decline has picked up considerably in the last two years.

For daft folk like champs elect to think I am sitting miserable is really very funny. I am just getting to the point where I couldn’t care less. But the hypocrisy and short memories still need exposed.

I’d also like to see 3 new faces and 6 or 7 leaving (Johansen, Rogic, GMS, Ciftci, Armstrong, Efe, Fisher)

Sometimes in football the same group of players can get different results. I believe the squad we have already is good enough to beat Lincoln Red Imps, Astana and Hapoel Beer-Sheva.

We have thrown new players into play-off games before and they normally perform poorly (Aliadiere, Berget, Van Dijk etc.)

The current squad have got this far on merit. They are the champions of Scotland and have eliminated a recent CL team to get here.

You sign a player to improve the squad in the long term. You don’t sign a player to win these games in pre-season,

It’s rubbish but it’s the hand UEFA’s dealt us.

  22. Personally, I think it’s a good idea to have a clown at a happy hour.

Sorry but you are talking out of your arse.

  24. traditionalist88 on

NegAnon is right to be concerned, we haven’t been convincing to date. There are good signs though, and the manager will make changes when things are not going well.

But lets wait until the end of the transfer window before we judge – may as well take a few weeks to get the players we really want. The timing of these early games is unfortunate but if Brendan Rodgers gets players he really wants now and in January, the situation next summer will not be so frantic.

    HH

  25. NegAnon2 on 5th August 2016 2:58 pm

You always equate failure on the field as being solely down to the board.

I’m not convinced that Ronny needed more players. If he could get the team to defend a set piece, we would have been in the champions league.

Part of coaching is developing the players that are already there and that’s something Brendan Rodgers is excellent at.

We appointed the wrong man. Maybe Ronny will be a success somewhere else but he wasn’t right for Celtic.

The constant demands to buy buy buy our way out of trouble also ignores our youth team. Kieran Tierney has come on leaps and bounds while O’Connell has also seized an opportunity. We should be calling for the likes of Henderson to get a run in the team as they are more likely to stick around if they do well.

I agree with you. The consequences of legitimate protest could be painful. UEFA sets the rules. We may think that their decisions in these matters to be faulty but if you enter their tournament, you play by their rules.

Would a protest against the Netanyahu regime held across London Road at the Velodrome be deemed “football related” by UEFA ? I would think not, harking back to the attempt by Gordon Waddell to have UEFA take action against Celtic for rebels songs sung by Celtic supporters in Spain in bars before the game.

So long as the flags, banners did not come into CP, IMHO it would be outwith the purview of UEFA.

I would appeal to all genuine Celtic supporters to give earnest consideration to this conundrum. HH

    Was Sir Robert wrong then?

For the record , I do not expect Celtic to refuse to accept the tie.

That Board won’t do a thing that won’t line the coffers.

I was just highlighting how things have changed and not for the better.

For me, if we get banned because some people choose to waive a flag then UEFA can stick their Champions League exactly where u told me I was talking out of
