Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

I’d like to make it clear that my withdrawal of financial support is completely due to the lack of action from Celtic.

  2. Westend of eastend…..they are dead in my eyes….i dont need PL or the SFA..to pat me on the head and tell me im right….we when we forget about them…stop discussing them… Then they will be gone…forever….imo…

  3. So depending on tomorrow nights’ results we could get Liverpool, Everton, Spurs or Man City in the next round.

    Lack of action from Celtic?

Hmmm, that’s a worry. Bearing in mind that you were one of the principals of Res 12.

You reckon you’ve been fobbed off?

Celtic’s refusal to put out any statement on their website regarding Resolution 12 is personally a concern of mine.

To summarise,we expect to wind this process up just before the body being liquidated runs out of money.

I have to admit … I often thought that Gerrard was overrated (in the way that every decent English player is bigged up to be the best thing since Pele)… but, to be fair, when the chips are down, the guy does produce the goods.

Not sure it matters who we get

We’ve played three decent teams this year …lost 4 drawn 2

Unless we have a very productive Jan window I can’t see us progressing beyond the next round

CELTIC chief Dermot Desmond last night admitted Scottish football needs Rangers back in the SPL as soon as possible.

The Parkhead majority shareholder spoke for the first time about the Ibrox club’s demise and their demotion to the Third Division.

And his comments are in stark contrast to those of Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell who claimed the club didn’t need their Old Firm rivals.

Back in February, Lawwell said: “We’ll survive very well. There will be no material impact on our business going forward” before the club hit out at First Minister Alex Salmond for claiming Celtic “can’t prosper unless Rangers are there”.

Desmond, though, is adamant Rangers won’t be out of the top flight for too long. And he insists their history and traditions are key to the Scottish game.

The Irishman said: “Rangers are a fantastic club with a great history. They will, in not too long a time, be back in the SPL. I have no doubt about that.

“And they’re needed for Scottish football because of their following, the size of the club and especially their history. We certainly would like to contest with them every week. We believe we have a better team and management structure.

“For us, it’s disappointing that they are not there but that’s decisions by the various clubs and leagues and we accept those.

“Rangers are one of the great clubs in Britain and we have to acknowledge that.

“They are a motivation for us to go along and beat them in every Old Firm match, so we miss that opportunity.”

Good man gearoid, here speaking of Dublin 4, West brit etc have you seen this new book Southside Provisional, autobiography of a guy from a wealthy south co Dublin background ( Blackrock college etc) dropped out of college in 70 went north and did his bit. Ended up going back to college in the late 80s and now a lawyer I’m Dublin. Seems an interesting story, unless he is Walter mitty

  13. Never thought I would be quoting teh London Evening Standard, but:

Celtic manager Ronny Delia is confident of signing Norwegian starlet Martin Odegaard ahead of Liverpool – despite the 15-year-old spending time with the Anfield club last week.

Brendan Rodgers was able to cast his eye over Odegaard last week when the midfielder trained with Liverpool, who has already spent time with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

But Delia coached the sort after playmaker in Norway and admits that, while it will fundamentally be the player’s decision, he remains confident of clinching a deal to bring him to Celtic Park.

“He is very special,” Delia told reporters.” Every time he gets a level, he takes it. His attitude is great and he always wants to progress, to learn.

“I know what’s happening. He’s in the town where my kids live and I know a lot of people there.

“I have control of the situation and we’ll see what we do.

“If there are possibilities, of course, we will try it. But it’s a very hard competition.”

“This is more about his choices,” he continued. “What is his thinking?

“Is it go to a big club and try to break in there and go through that road or go to a smaller club in not such a good league but it makes it easier to make the first team?

“He’s a very good player but we must stand in line – there are 20 clubs, maybe more, who want him.

“He has been to clubs all over Europe – to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Dortmund and Liverpool. PSG wanted him but he hasn’t had time to visit so there is some hard competition.”
