Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

For me, the most remarkable thing through all of this is, particularly given how much cheating that is done (on and off the pitch), how shockingly bad Sally is as a manager.

I think this is great news for Celtic fans – any nascent revolt by the peepil is much less likely now that their sense of entitlement has been reinforced. They are now (hunbelievably) even more deluded than before.

Forget petitions to hmrc or adverts in papers or writing a letter to whoever it is…best thing to do is not go to the semi final. Two fingers up to the SFA, sponsors, sky etc. Too many sellick fans moan about the corruption……then blindly support it.

  10. Evening all.

I’m just back from working in acambridge for a couple of days, scanned back a bit and see something about a Sevco statement?

Can anyone give a wee summary please?

Or point me in the right direction.

    Thanks.

Frequently, very frequently I remember the reasons that our club were founded.

Not for profit, not the off shoot of a rowing club, not because it was the done thing and not purely as a rival to another district or area.

No, our club came into being because a special man recognised the poverty, hunger and desperation of those in St Mary’s, Sacred Heart and St Michael’s parishes in Glasgow’s East End.

Think about that for a moment, it’s an incredible thing and we’re fortunate enough to be the descendants.

I don’t go every week to line the pockets of the prima donnas, they could put 11 donkeys in green and white, it wouldn’t matter.

I go every week to be part of what Walfrid started.

  16. What is the Stars on

Gearoid, maybe you do but I am not a Dublin four er by any stretch of the imagination, your hero is however a liar

  17. The fact that the same club statement has been withdrawn just proves the illegitimacy of it in the first place.

Sevco have just by their actions validated our argument.

They ain’t the same club, the died.

The updated statement just told us so!!!!

Was so angry earlier, now so happy.

    Hahahahaha

  18. gearoid, I support and agree with most of what you say and do but we have to agree to disagree on this one.

If someone comes up with a definite plan to do something rather than just a load of hyperbole then if I agree with the cause, I’ll play my part. Winning Captains idea one small example.

However I don’t see the logic of hurting our Club because we are pissed off with the Huns or the SFA.

  19. So, what do the Sevco board do now? Say ” sorry Campbell. , wet keys, what are we like?! Remember , we know what you did. You know nothing, nothing . Right?” effing train wreck of an organisation, Sevoo and the SPFL.

On another note – ever if they go into admin and are liquidated, be prepared for another incarnation to arise. The fact is that there’s a demographic in Scotland that’s wants a team in blue playing at AyeBrokes so they call call it “rangers”. Its a rallying flag for bigotry. Always has been and always will be.

  23. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

In relation to the Charlie Telfer tribunal decision and how a club in administration should be dealt with.

The BBC had an article last Friday about the predicament Salisbury City FC were in due to administration. A consortium including Steve Claridge have taken over.

Below are two paragraphs from the article explaining how its a new club and why.

‘Because we cannot be Salisbury City FC again due to FA regulations, we intend to seek supporters’ input in a new name for the club and perhaps even have a vote on a shortlist if that is permitted.”

‘The club were punished for failing to pay players and staff by being relegated one division to Conference South and were eventually thrown out of the Conference after missing further payment deadlines’.

Compare and contrast to how the SFA acted here two and a bit years ago.

Dundee Utd will hopefully make a stance that no payment will be paid until the liquidators of the deid club say if they are due part of it and if so, how much

  26. mullet and co 2 on

Football is apparently the only business that the legality of liquidation does not apply to.

What a hocus of rules to get that club and its supporters the results they want.

Liquidated when there are debts to pay and mysteriously recompensed when debts are owed.

Witness the fine being made payable by Rangers in liquidation when LNS applied a paltry 250k fine to oldco. Now we have newc benefiting from the work of he oldco with the fee set for this player.

In no other situation would you find worth of assets being inextricably linked from one company to another.

Football seems uniquely to be able to contravene the ethics within the legislation surrounding liquidation.

I am sure creditors continue to be confounded by the knots tied around this bastardisation to make it work.

Surely the liquidators say that as the player tupe’d to a newco he can only have the development fee calculated from that date.
