Billy and Davie on Caesar and the Assassin

856

Billy McNeill and Davie Hay met the press at Celtic Park yesterday, along with Alex Gordon, who authored their time as managers of Celtic.  It didn’t disappoint……

Billy was self-effacing as ever.  For all purposes, today he is an ordinary Celtic fan, so much so you need to remind yourself that there is nothing in the club game he hasn’t done.  Yesterday was about his days as Celtic manager but he made the point that Davie Hay was a profound influence on him as a team-mate.

The take-away thought I had on Davie Hay was about his range of knowledge and experience.  He has done so much in the game which still pulses in his veins.  Does Scotland still produce men of his calibre?  If so, why are we not giving them a platform to flourish?

There is tons of great stuff in the book from both men:

“We were already a goal down nine minutes into the second-half when Johnny Doyle was ordered off.  As he came off, I remember telling him he would be in serious trouble if we lost.

“I was furious, especially as we were in such a desperate situation at the time.

“Afterwards in the foyer, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Mike Jackson, Paul Wilson, Pat McCluskey, Benny Rooney and a whole host of former players were dancing around in amazement.

“Jinky was as happy as I’ve seen him. That win meant so much to anyone with an affiliation with Celtic.”

– Billy McNeill on winning the league against Rangers in 1979.

“I arranged for someone to cut out the stories and pin them to the walls of our dressing room at Love Street.

“I said nothing, but I could see the players reading the clippings. It was having the desired effect. It’s never clever to dismiss Celtic.

“It’s history now that we won 5-0 and Hearts lost 2-0.

“I think I still owe [Albert Kidd] a pint!”

-Davie Hay on winning the league at Love St in 1986.

The book’s great, reading the step-by-step accounts of what happened from the managers’ view, you’ll love it.  I know I’m biased but it’s the best thing CQN has done, a wee bit of our history set down on record.

I heard that the agent representing Martin Odegaard was at Lennoxtown last week and asked Ronnie Deila if he would be interested in taking his player in the summer. Apparently the Norwegian wonderkid is very keen to team up with his “mentor” again, as opposed to going to a top European club at such a young age and being “swallowed up” in the system.

I was very doubtful at first until I started to recall how about a week ago, Deila suddenly started hinting in the media about still having a chance of signing the player. I am pretty sure his words were along the lines of “I am in control of the situation”. I remember thinking at the time . . . what does he mean by that? I also wondered why he was suddenly talking about winning the race to sign the youngster.

Anyway, the guy who told me this – a businessman with investments in Celtic – was absolutely bullish in saying that Odegaard will be with us next season on a 4-year contract.

That would take him up to 20 and after that, who knows?

I can’t speak for Kano, it’s been a while since I spoke with him or his wife or Ramie.

In my isolation I think – I think – more than anything – Kano needs outside human contact from friends, to supplement his day to day, minute by minute friends, like his wife and Ramie.

Rangers supporters did pay for his last holiday. To my knowledge and recollection the only holiday he’s ever had since he fell ill.

I may very well be wrong with that. And when we talk about Kanto, Kano’s illness takes a toll on so many people who wish him better, and I am not talking about me either, I’m talking about those who have known his love and share it and some of them wear red/white/blue scarfs.

    Charlie Telfer

RANGERS have been forced into a U-turn over their claim Dundee United used the new club argument in the Charlie Telfer tribunal.

United were forced to pay the Ibrox outfit £204,000 for the promising youngster by a panel yesterday.

Rangers had earlier put up a statement on their website that the Premiership outfit had failed to convince the panel they were only due to cough up two years’ development fee because that’s only how long the Glasgow club had been in existence.

But after a lawyer representing United had forced Rangers to pull it off their website a new, shorter statement was put up – with no mention of the new club claim.

A United source told Record Sport: “The club were raging at Rangers perpetuating this myth.

“It was and always has been totally inaccurate and the fact that they acted so quickly to change their statement acknowledges that.”

The original Rangers statement read: “Dundee United introduced a late argument stating Rangers should only be awarded compensation for the training and development of Charlie Telfer for two years instead of the 10 years that he was with the Club.

“They argued the club in its current form has only existed for two years.

“It is disappointing Dundee United tried to pursue this tiresome, legally incorrect and provocative argument given that it has been repeatedly confirmed by the football authorities in Scotland and beyond that administration and liquidation of the companies that owned the Club did not break the continuity of the club’s history or its record of honours won.”

However, after being contacted by United’s lawyer, the new statement simply said: “Rangers has received today the decision of the SPFL Compensation Tribunal and are content with the fee Dundee United have been ordered to pay for the training and development of Charlie Telfer who was at the club for a period of 10 years.

The payment awarded, which was significantly higher than Dundee United’s final offer, vindicates the club’s decision to take the matter to a Compensation Tribunal.”

Midfielder Telfer, 19, was out of contract when he moved to Tayside in the summer but Rangers were due a fee under rules governing the movement of players under the age of 23.

With both clubs unable to decide on a fee the matter was settled by the independent panel.

United chairman Stephen Thompson, who attended the hearing alongside Rangers representatives David Somers, Sandy Easdale and Derek Lambias was unhappy at the amount of compensation his club will now have to pay.

He said: “This judgement in our opinion will have a serious impact on the freedom of movement of some young players through no fault of their own.

“Today’s decision protects clubs even in the event that those clubs are responsible for players’ careers being stifled at a critical stage in their development.

“It will restrict the opportunities for some of our most promising young players to gain regular first team football and act as a deterrent to any Scottish football club which wishes to take such players on.

“Today’s decision is completely at odds with the stated aims of our football authorities in respect of encouraging our most promising young players to play first team football at the highest level.

“It highlights the need for parents and young players to choose their clubs very, very carefully.

“Today’s judgment now sets a dangerous precedent that means some of our most promising young players will be deprived of the opportunity to secure a contract at a club where they have been offered a genuine first team opportunity and to improve their earnings purely because the compensation has been set at a ridiculously prohibitive level.

“The sum awarded to Rangers is almost seven times the amount offered to the player under the terms of his new contract with the Glasgow club. “

He said: “This judgement in our opinion will have a serious impact on the freedom of movement of some young players through no fault of their own.
