Bitterest pill, hilarious, angry, ranting

1510

News that the Maribor game later this month is on the season book has setup a dramatic climax to what will be remembered for decades as a remarkable month in our history.  We didn’t ask for this situation.  As we drifted away from Murrayfield, our thoughts were only of Celtic’s abject display, but nine days and two Uefa Disciplinary hearings later, we’re through to the Champions League play-off round next week.

For Legia Warsaw, the pill is unbearably bitter.  So much so, they had to appeal to Uefa, and on to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, despite scant cause.  CAS who will eventually be asked to determine if Uefa’s rules were interpreted correctly.  Which they were.  The consequences for Legia are so abrupt their reactions are understandable.

Football affects us in ways which are not always beneficial.  There was nothing Legia fans could do to remove their distress this past week, but reading comments, by fans of another Scottish club on this subject, has given a glimpse into the human condition.

The emotional investment by some Scottish football fans in Legia’s forlorn cause has evidently resulted in untold misery.  Celtic fell into the Clyde and came out holding a winning Euromillions ticket.  It was unplanned for, random and undeserved, but it happened and, right now, Celtic are the luckiest team in the world.

At a time when their phoenix club is falling apart before their eyes, our unearned good fortune has caused volumes of hilarious, angry, ranting.  Efforts to explain it as a consequence of immoral plots (as well as running the Celtic, the SFA, the SPFL, Glasgow City Council and The Commonwealth, Peter Lawwell also manipulates Uefa’s Disciplinary Body) demonstrate classic evidence of our old friend, Cognitive Dissonance.

We were blind lucky, accept that, or continue to give the rest of the world new and innovative ways to enjoy their football.  It’s not worth the dissonance.

It’s been an interesting week in the media.  Neil McCann’s excitable misinterpretation of the rules on Wednesday was a highlight, but the paper which brought you ‘news’ that Celtic wanted Dan Pertrescu to be manager, who declined as he was warned the club have problems by Neil Lennon, subsequently got a second story when they ran a properly sourced article denying ‘reports’ Neil spoke to Pertrescu.

I’m also loving reading those who in the media were spinning anti-Celtic nonsense that Neil left because he wasn’t happy with the player budget, now suggesting he could take over Crystal Palace, after Tony Pulis left because he wasn’t happy with the player budget.

Nonsense like this is never random, it has a purpose………..

On a related subject, I’m gutted for Palace, their fans, and for Pulis. The economics of the entire English league structure doesn’t work. Well-run clubs with good managers will be weeded out and relegated, as crazy debt-junkies inflate the bubble a little longer. Scottish football may be poor, but there are only two of our 42 clubs in any sort of financial danger.

Flag Day tomorrow, get along early, give Fergus a warm welcome back, and bring some change for The Kano Foundation bucket collection on the way in. Remember to join Fergus, Jim Craig and others from the Celtic Graves Society for the Jimmy Quinn event at Kilsyth Cemetery.

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to Mary’s Meals by entering our competition for tickets in the comfy seats tomorrow.  I’m proud of every one of you.  My thanks also to Magners for helping out.  The competition is now closed, winners will be informed by email shortly, so check your inbox!

  1. Watched the game ‘live’ in my local CSC.

There was not one person in the room who thought that was a penalty. Every single person believed that Bo dived.

Some of you are sounding like the Legia chairman.

Its becoming tedious that the smsm are brow beating celtic fans for booing fergus at the flag day for being ” penny pinching ” if my memory serves me right this was not the reason. The reason the fans bood was because of the infighting at the club where the most successful management team in a decade was allowed to leave after stopping a deid team’s 10 in a row attempt. They achieved this with limited resources and the fans euphoria was soon diluted by petty politics nothing to do with penny pinching but smsm are trying to link then and now. As much as im unhappy with lack of transfer activity if we boo pl then we are playing into medias hands. Have a great day those going and save the boos till another time!

I agree – I said to friend this morning Celtic should retaliate first.

Whether Derk dived or not, isn’t really the issue – I’m looking for a comparison in being branded a cheat by the media.

    RWE,

Institutionalised anti-Catholic/Irish (and so, in their wee world, all things Celtic) discrimination is part and parcel of the fabric of Scottish life, certainly the West of Scotland. My worry is that it will be openly practised in an Independent Scotland; in part, because even the likes of Spiers, who would think of himself as not like that, shows it in his writing.

Some of them don’t even need an excuse; look at the BBC’s Sports Department. They are already in overdrive. What kind of coverage will we get in an Independent Scotland?

Nail skelped right on the head there mate.

Beyond the scope of my lens why ANY Tim would vote yes, absolutely bonkers raving mad.

They would have an even clearer pitch to have Edinburgh court ‘justice’, Bryson verdicts, LNS deliberations……..thats only since 2012 ffs……..we’d be heading back to “whit school was that again son?” in jig time.

You ate one up on me.

l have only seen pictures not video.

However the look on DB’s face as he hits the turf on his knees after the ‘altercation” tells its own story.

    The look — bemusement.

    Something happened.

Remenber they got AMcG sent off at ER.

How stupid did that look in the cold light of day?

  6. So Ronny. Welcome to scotland.

Let’s hammer all before us this season. Have to get a knockout to win on points in this place.

I’d forgotten about that Boyd dive. He had one or two others that I remember.

Have to say though. I’m astounded of forehead that ANYONE is astounded of forehead that Dirk has been pulled up for diving.

  9. I think Derk went down but there’s a difference from going down easy and diving. If you’re knocked off your stride and as a result cannot get a shot away or a good shot anyway, should that not be a penalty?

  10. I think we’ve seen enough this week to realise that even without NL at the helm, the scum press don’t need an excuse to kelp it in to our club, I don’t expect this ever to change, it’s the lifeblood of the press and especially so in the last few years, McCann’s outburst is symptomatic of how hurting they really are and they will take any chance to kelp it into us even more, I wonder I really wonder if this would have to the new compliance officer had McCann not made such a fuss, he’ll get his soon enough for wee cheats like him their day always comes one way or another, it’s up to Celtic now to draw a line in the sand over this and say, Hey You Those Days Are Gone, Pure Gone By The Way!

Neither am I, – it was inevitable after the microscopic multiple replays, and outrage that

    the ‘media’ created.

We could have had the standard “I’ve seen them given” – then the sound of silence.

That’s what happens in most other games.

It dis nae matter if he dived done a rolly polly or a triple somersault ,the fact that he was

pushed before he done anything means it was a penalty..The question is did he con the ref into giving a penalty the answer imo is NO

The ref saw the push and blew for the penalty .. correct decision

  14. Neganon –

Having taken the time to go back and check, I do indeed owe you an apology.

I am sorry mate. It was one of your partners in mineshafting. I won’t name him cos I have made my point.

    Again, sorry mhan.

Sorry, duty called. I don’t think absolutely every signing has to be a “Moneyball” signing. If we need someone to do Scott Brown’s job when he’s out of commision, then I’m sure all concerned would be looking to get one in…. at the right price, on the right wages etc etc. The criticism I remember Lubo getting, yes he did get criticised, was that he could turn dominance into chances but, if we were under the cosh, he couldn’t boss a game on his own. We’d still need the proper mix of strength and creativity.

A brief scan of Newsnow Celtic backs all the points Paul makes. The thread literally reads like an anti-Celtic cesspit. I’ll no back there for a while.

hunnish media: doing Celtic’s PR for them, for over a hundred years. Don’t these idiots get that every time they go all goal fiddling, secret society on us, it just pulls us closer together?

In reference to Moonsbeams wee debate with Bawsman and Neganon earlier, I hope everyone realizes that those responsible for directing the diatribe of hate against us for the last week are all in the No camp. Mealy mouthed editorials to the contrary…of course. Something to think about eh?

  17. Have any of you guys ever played the game?

ANY forward, racing in on goal on a one a one, is NEVER going to go to ground.

Every player in the world lives for scoring goals and the adulation of the fans which follows.

If you are going at pace (that was never me) it takes very little to knock you off stride.

    DB was fouled.

  18. Thing about Bo which gas stuck with me was the comment saying ‘why would Bo go down when it would gave been easier to score?’

  20. On the “I’ve seen then given” front …

How many column inches on the recent TFOD2 penalty against the Hibs?

Any thoughts on the detailed and incisive commentary?

Was the SFA required to go into emergency session?

  21. BSR

Mmmmm. Have to confess, I’m long sighted and wear contact lenses but… I thought it was an obvious dive the first time I saw it at full speed and I thought it was a dive on every subsequent slo-mo replay that I saw.

I thought the one at the other end fell into the ‘seen them given, but not a pen for me’ category.

Still, it’s often very difficult to call these decisions and for once I’d excuse the ref from blame.

  24. Oops…

I believe he DID get a little push, I think his boot got clipped a bit, I think had he gone down then he would have got a pen.

If I was being generous I’d say he tried to keep on his feet but with his balance undone he realised he couldn’t quite reach the ball so fell down. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t a pen but equally he needn’t have collapsed.

I think it shows Bo to a T….he could have scored by using a single minded determination to get the ball and score but…its not in his make up.

Both pen incidents were of the soft variety and had either been awarded against Celtic I would have been beelin’.

Did DB claim for a foul?

As I have explained before my knowledge is based on a couple of photos.

My view — he looked bemused as he hit the turf.

    As WGS comprehensively proved …

If you think you are about to be fouled you act appropriately even if your retina does not feel the finger nail.

    Case closed my Lord.

So much contact that your balance remains until after contact you step and throw yourself to ground. And as you point out the more annoying thing is that he was through on goal.

Any other team and more so especially a team in dead colours and the faux outrage the other way would be astounding of forhead!
