Breakthrough day for Yang and Palma

140

Three goals after the 90-minute mark is a first for Celtic, as Aberdeen’s afternoon turned from a respectable-looking 2-0 deficit at 76 minutes, to a washout by fulltime.  More on the visitors later.  This was a breakthrough day for Celtic’s Yang and Luis Palma.

Palma hit the byline and crossed with his left on 9 minutes, this is noteworthy.  When on the left, Luis normally looks to drop the shoulder and cut inside.  It is his classic play; consider his goal against Motherwell and the disallowed effort against Lazio.  The trouble is, defenders know this is what he likes to do, so are ready for it.

If he can regularly hit the byline and cross with his left, he will be even more effective cutting inside, as defenders would have to cover both options.  This is the classic John Robertson play, cut inside for a shot (Hamburg), hit the byline and cross (Malmo).  Luis added a third option, crossing from a deeper position with the outside of his right foot, for Oh to complete the rout.  This demonstrated his fondness for his right and where the main development gains are to be made.

Yang Hyun-jun (21), got his landmark first goal for Celtic (see above left foot cross by Palma), even before this, he was a handful for the Aberdeen defence.  So far this season, competition for space on the Celtic wings has been tough.  Yang has had to wait for sporadic opportunities.  Injuries to Abada and Maeda will see us lean on the young Korean during the busy period after the international break.

We will have a feel for his potential by Christmas.  That blast of pace he has over 5 yards – and the ability to take the ball with him – is something no one else at the club can match.  The material is there for Celtic to develop.  Injuries have provided a pivotal moment in the development of Celtic players before, think of Leigh Griffiths’ injury in Augst 2016 which opened the door for Moussa Dembele.  The wide-right jersey is up for grabs for the next six weeks, Yang has his stage.

I spent much of the second half wanting Aberdeen’s Rubezic to get a second yellow after his awful ‘challenge’ on Kyogo, which VAR should have adjusted to a straight red.  This was tempered after I looked up Aberdeen’s next fixture.  Being Aberdeen manager is not for the faint hearted.  They kept Celtic out for an hour between the second and third goals, on that hill, Barry Robson has to build his fort.

The reference to academic studies are wasted on me , I’m no Chairbhoy

So your position is that people will change their view and you’re not prepared to change that position 🤭

We should respect the sacrifice of those who died in WW2 particularly.

There are around 300,000 Commonwealth soldiers from WW2 still alive and around 100,000 in the US. They are all likely to have gone by by the mid 2030’s- what do we do then?

You’re saying now it was just about respect but you have heard how it was more complicated than that for our Irish fans. It is also no sign of direspect to not wear Poppies on the jersey. The post WW2 teams did not wear one, the Lions and Jock never did, Mon’s teams and WGS’s teams never did at football games. Many of them will have observed as individuals on Remembrance Sunday church services when it meant something and it was not a conscripted reverence.

I doubt any of the minority who booed on Sunday would have any opinion on Strictly but , even there, you are not far from conscripted reverence. Try not wearing a poppy on TV anytime from October to end of November and you’ll face calls for your sacking, or worse. Are those the values you want defended?

“So your position is that people will change their view and you’re not prepared to change that position”

    ——————–

I can see that, if you did not read the extensive literature on how views and perceptions are exchanged, you could misrepresent my view as stated above.

If I can be allowed to present my own position in my own words I would say:-

It has been shown conclusively that people can be influenced to change their vies and perceptions and that none of us are immune to that. I cannot change that truth anymore than I can defy the influence of gravity or Newton’s 2nd law.

    ————–

Most people can and do change their views and most people believe they are relatively immune to that effect, and most don’t read the research because it helps them to continue to believe in their ability to remain uninfluenced.

  4. Great game on Sunday, this team is really coming together, some really special performances. As JoBo alludes to, we can’t vote for them all – I’ve gone for the creative fulcrum of Palma and O’Riley and given young Oh a vote in front of his fellow Countryman and a couple other outstanding candidates due to the goals.

  5. Within a year of Great Britain declaring war on Germany in August 1914, it had become obvious that it was not possible to continue fighting by relying on voluntary recruits.

  6. Those are very worrying accounts if you’re a Hun.

They are £16.5m in debt, they made a £4.5m net loss in a year of champions league football and £24m player trading profit.

They made a huge operating loss in a CL year.

They outspent us by £4m in wages, £1m in amortisation. Their football operation cost £5m more than “Lucky” Ange’s by the measure that Uefa uses.

They had a negative cashflow of £7m in a CL year, they have less than £6m cash in bank and much less free money coming from Uefa. That is extremely worrying for them – they are going to have to find a large amount of cash from somewhere, and its likely going to cost them a lot money. Nobody takes that risk unless it costs the Huns a lot of money.

    They aren’t a sustainable business.

  7. I am no accountant but I would love to hear what sevco’s financial situation really is. I’m hoping that they are in deep trouble, enough to see them die again. Probably too fanciful, I suppose.

  9. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023-24*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #18 – CELTIC 6 ABERDEEN 0 (YANG, KYOGO, PALMA, TURNBULL, OH(2))*

    Good evening, friends.

A weekend which saw us extend our lead at the top of the table, albeit only by 4 goals and arguably our best 105 minutes of the season so far. Having won on their recent visits to Ibrox and Hampden I was expecting Aberdeen to come toe to toe and give us a tough game. But almost straight from kick off I could tell that they were in Glasgow to defend, with a 5-4-1 set up that usually had the ‘1’ about 40 yards from their own goal. Celtic started very well and both wingers were eager for the ball and productive with it. So it was especially pleasing when our left winger put in a fine delivery for our right winger to head home. And when Kyogo made it 2 midway through the first half the points already looked secure.

The second half saw us maintain our relentless attacks and we were rewarded with 4 more fine goals with our 5th being the pick of the bunch – Palma again crossing but with the outside of his right boot and Oh bulleting the header home for his first of 2 goals in added on time. Palma’s penalty conversion and Turnbull’s strike from outside the box (is that all he ever contributes, ha ha?) saw us record our biggest victory since Brendan returned.

The serious head injury sustained by Kyogo was really concerning at the time and arguably should have resulted in the Aberdeen defender seeing red rather than yellow. But with our next game being almost 2 weeks away then hopefully he will be available by then.

We have now played 18 games, winning 11, drawing 3 and losing 4 with 37 goals scored and 20 conceded.

My huge, sincere thanks to the 100 who voted on this game. This is a record turnout for this season. Ironically, the previous best was when 87 voted after game 2, a 3-1 away win against, yip, Aberdeen.

The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Hart: 0

    Johnston: 0

Carter-Vickers*: 11 (just the 11 – what game were you all watching, lol??)

    Scales: 14

    Taylor: 0

    McGregor: 0

    Holm: 0

    O’Riley: 65

    Yang*: 81

    Kyogo: 0

Palma*: 97 (the 3 folk who didn’t have Luis in their top 3 shall remain nameless)

    Oh: 31

    Turnbull: 0

    Bernabei: 0

    Forrest: 0

    Iwata: 1

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Aberdeen are –

    Palma – 5 points

    Yang – 4 points

    O’Riley – 3 points

    Oh – 2 points

    Scales – 1 point

The overall positions after 18 games played are –

    50 points – O’Riley

    48 points – Scales

19 points – Kyogo and Palma

18 points – McGregor and Maeda

    17 points – Carter-Vickers

    16 points – Yang

    11 points – Johnston A and Oh

    9 points – Nawrocki

    8 points – Hart

6 points – Lagerbielke, Taylor and Turnbull

    5 points – Hatate

    4 points – Bain

    2 points – Ralston

1 point – Forrest and Holm

0 points – Abada, Bernabei, Bernardo, Haksabanovic, Iwata, Johnston M, Phillips, Starfelt and Welsh

International Break now so a wee rest from emails for this old man. See you all (and your friends and family) after the break – a home league game against Motherwell on Saturday 25 November with a 3.00pm kick off.

King Lubo – good for you.

Agree with parts of your post.

    Disagree with others.

Stimulated a good discussion though with some great responses.

I’ve yapped at length on here previously as to why I’ll never wear a red poppy and why I’ll never noisily interrupt a minutes silence.

    IMHO ….

On the poppy trade each tear – a fairly noble memoriam shamelessly hijacked by ignorant, jingoistic, imperialistic, desperate, militarism.

No one seems to ask the question?

Why are the army front and centre on remembrance Sunday?

The vast majority of those combatants killed in the two world wars were not professional soldiers. Most were conscripted under threat of prison.

Genuine fight against fascism in WWII.

In WWI, senseless slaughter by failed imperial establishments who were totally indifferent to the death toll. The dead were only subjects after all.

    As for the minutes silence?

Play it smart and be quiet for one minute once a year.

Otherwise Celtic (not you) look bad by your anonymous actions.

If you’re up for confrontation … go to a public remembrance event and boo if you are courageous enough.

  12. Superbru Round 13 Update

The 6 games produced a lot of high scores but nobody got the exact score right for Celtic’s 6:0 demolition of the sheep

Our top 3 performers this week were:

    1. Hopeful Hoops- 13 pts

    2= Clinko & maccargo- 11 pts

4th- James Cant (Lord Farquhar) – 10.5 pts

In the hotly contested battle for the wooden spoon, we have two losers sharing the wooden spoon :-

fitbabhoy (inappropriately named this week) & The Token Tim (who may have been Sake affected) both scored 1 point and held off the 2pt challenge from Bada Bing & Chalmersbhoy

This leaves the overall race as :-

    1. Leggy- 79.5 pts

    2. BC Milan- 78.5 pts

3= Billy Bhoy & Hopeful Hoops- 71.5 pts

and in the underpowered ESP race for a real wooden spoon, we have:-

    wee BGFC- 32 pts

    TheLurkinTim- 37.5 pts

    wee McCaff- 38.5 pts

Our next deadline is Sat. 25th Nov. when we have five 3 pm kick offs including us vs The Mudders and a tricky trip into Aberdeen’s late November temperatures for Sevco on Sunday

    Good Luck!

  14. Our Bhoys played an Outstanding game, especially after that crushing game in Madrid.

The bench, efter Sunday, should start to really impact games now. Ange was Brilliant utilising subs.

Palma & Yang Superb. Ⓒ philvis Thumbsup, they were Superb.

I do think we will Win the next 2 Champions League games, if they urnae spoilt by a VAR/Ref decision – Scotland disnae huv a bigger Viewer audience than Italy, t’is mair comparable to the Netherlands tho.

This team is looking very good IMHO.

In both cases the agenda is set out beforehand by organisation running the gig.

In both cases a minutes silence is offered and is asked to be respected.

In both cases, you can choose to turn up if you want.

(The GB played it very smart last year and refused to take their seats until what they saw as a sham was over. Good on them. Everyone’s a winner)

  16. Matthew may stay to Captain Celtic in the future, when Cal’s not @ Xavi levels, Cal husnae been but he is the closest, well efter the Maestro, totally diffent Vera…..Lynn?

  17. Sevco always saying they pay there players more than Celtic do ,I don’t believe that ,they make statements like expansion of Ibrox more than ours ,but say they can’t do it for a while ,the one I’ll give them is for to pull down Edminston House and replace with another Sports Bar ,Our ordinary fans are still waiting we’re hundreds of them gather on match days ,for a Hotel a Musuem a bigger Ticket office to be built ,does anyone have a update of what’s happening,or is it pie in the sky ,which doesn’t surprise me coming from this lack of investment from these old covers within the Celtic Board ,they are just interested in there own selfish needs along with there Pension Pots ,trying to get rid of them is the 40 Thousand dollar question,
