Brendan commits to Celtic

276

A few hours ago we discussed Brendan Rodgers eventually retiring from Celtic through old age. That took a step close to reality today when he signed a contract which commits him to the club until 2021.

Brendan knows that he and Celtic are perfect for each other. He has no interest in returning to England, or leaving for foreign shores. He has made his home in Scotland, at Celtic, the club he loves.

If you think Champions League group stage and an unbeaten 38 game domestic season are the limits of his ambitions, think again. He has been planning for the period up to 2021 since shortly after arriving at the club, keen to build a lasting and memorable legacy.

I’ve reprinted today’s earlier blog below, as it’s pertinent to today’s announcement. And there’s a bit about the Celtic Disabled Supporters’ Association dinner dance………

The earlier blog:

You will have noticed minds elsewhere have recently turned to the most difficult question in Scottish football, how will Celtic’s inextricable domination of Scottish football be stopped? If you have been reading CQN for as long as I’ve been writing it, you’ll know the information you should consult on this question is the financial fundamentals.

Celtic’s domination was assured since well before it was predicted here (in 2004). Our only opponent worthy of the name was indulging in an orgy of irresponsibility. While the eventual outcome was more delightful than any of us dared hope, the consequences for the Scottish title were always going to end up the same way.

Celtic just needed to stave off the desire to join the lemmings, keep to a responsible budget, and their long-term outcome was assured.

But this is not the issue most commentators ponder when considering how Celtic will be clawed back into the pack, all they can see is a manager with the apparent Midas touch. While Brendan is here, the story goes, it’s not even worthwhile discussing Celtic’s domination.

I agree with this point, although I could add that Ronny won two leagues more than comfortably, Neil won three, and when Brendan eventually reties due to old age, we’ll be very capable of recruiting an effective talent.

There’s been a fascinating juxtaposition this week on the subject of Brendan as he secured his first title as Celtic manager. 11 months ago, when Ronny announced he was leaving, Peter Lawwell drew up his targets. Two names were at the top of the list, Brendan, and now-Sunderland manager, Davie Moyes. Both were interviewed and both knew each other was under consideration. I’m pretty sure Celtic were prepared to sign up the first one who would commit.

11 months on and, from 100 miles away, life seems to be disentangling for Davie Moyes. The jocular threat to slap a female reporter is systematic of a man who is losing control. After a promising honeymoon period at Sunderland, his team is destined for relegation, most probably as bottom of the division.

There is a haunting realisation in the North East that, like a struggling swimmer who has bobbed below the waterline a few times, the next time they are under could be a great deal more consequential.  Moyes’ reputation has taken more than a slap.

I remember Davie as a player (splay-footed and unconvincing), and wanted his as Celtic manager when Gordon Strachan resigned. His decade at Everton provides ample evidence of his genuine talent. These are the things my mind turns to when his name is mentioned.

When Brendan hears Davie’s name, what chance he thinks, “There but for the grace of God………”

We’ve got a great manager, but he knows he’s got a great job.

I probably couldn’t afford a season ticket up front unless MissGFTB has plenty of £2 coins in her piggy bank…..but am afraid I hate to post it but the Plc board have invested in Brendan and will look to balance the books, gone are the days a wee lift over to cheer your heroes on, these days their wages have to be paid, and if that means Brendan going up to £50k a week well am afraid just now there are plenty willing to pay it……..would you prefer going to the game but the product on the park not as good ?

I wouldn’t mind sharing a round or two with yourself, I am as far removed as an entitlement supporter that you would ever meet …… And I always buy my round even when am leaving the company :-)

Snoop Dogg buys Dermot’s shares and owns Celtic. Forget Almore’s cafe. Snoop Dogg is lining up Amsterdam style coffeeshops up the Celtic Way.Green grass of Paradise.

How did they afford it last season?

FFS they are soon going to publish the best results in years with a £30m bonanza from Brendan and the players gaining them that from qualification.

How much more money do they need to extract from the fan base with that sort of income. And I expect another bonanza from CL this season!

They should be investing the PLC’s profit in Brendan. Not expecting and forcing the fans to pay for that.

But hey they have history with that with Henrick.

Gutless spineless bonus and dividend loving green Hun bassas.

I’d rather be supporting a club that is open to all, financially, than ripping the piss and cloaking their bad news with great news.

At what point are some fans going to finally question this lot.

Oh wait! That’ll be when it affects them!

Or is there no limit that you are willing to question as long as your team beats Stupid FC and gains the riches of the CL. Riches that should benefit the support they receive weekly and yes possibly see us not signing a player that might cost that extra couple of million of greed.

We are so far ahead in this country that punishing our supporters should be the last option on these disputable capatilist minds.

  6. Liverpool’s owners have scrapped their controversial £77 ticket and apologised for the “distress caused” by last week’s pricing announcement.

Thousands of fans left 77 minutes into Saturday’s draw with Sunderland at Anfield in protest at the planned top-price £77 ticket in the new main stand.

  7. Ye see…….it’s like this…..

Cellic fans have been onto a shafting since……

“The Game, The Game Is Over….The Rebels Have Been Done!”

Fergus got rid of the rebels one by one…..

Fergus labelled the fans as “…..our customers!”

Just as he declared the tricolor as a provocative banner!

Just as he showed how much he got the club by bringing in Jock Brown!

    Fast-forwarding to today….

The fantastic Brendan news, came with a £50 per head cost….

    Naaaah,……ah think it’ll cost more than that…..

Watch for the hun-tax-case-stuff being buried behind a big mountain of ice cream and jelly….?

Then again,….maybe there won’t be as big a windfall from the CL-money-pot as some might think….?

How much do ye get back for 3 points ?

The PLC board are only as sleekit as they’re allowed to be….

    They know that,……

Had it not been for a Paddy Roberts missed sitter vs the ‘magic-hat-huns’ in the SCSF…..

We would have had Ronny the puppet here this season, fooling loads of folk that, there was a tight competition……

Alas, Paddy missed the sitter and apathy emptied 30,000 seats, forcing the PLC to act!

What should also be noted here,……….

The PLC board new that, they’re biggest battle to sell season tickets was from APATHY…..

NOT, from any threatened fan rebellion……..The rebel Cellic supporters died with the Jungle…..nowadays there isny a society of Celtic supporters….it’s riddled with cliques and what are cliques ?….the’re anti-Cellic-sclaff-baw-golfing-bumchum-blowhards.

The only way that apathy will be kept from revisiting Celtic Park is if the huns get stronger………even on, Brendan’s return to Cellic Park on Wednesday night as a Champion Cellic manager…..apathy had returned, just look at all the empty seats and, not the Lawwell attendance figure ?

    Hmmmm…….?

That makes me think that,….Mike Ashley isny hingin aboot for nothin…..and, the Cellic PLC might just know that as well….imho.

    Anyway,……

    Thoughts and Prayers for all

    Supporters of Glasgow Celtic.

    ……..off-oot.

  8. Just read back before i hit the kip. Interesting arguments (opinions) about our club and the way its run. Not for me to judge either way, but it got me thinking. How do other clubs do it? Ive heard Dortmund have a fantastic relationship with their fans and how affordable it is to watch them, so I took a wee wander over to their web site, (English version). I’ll post a link, see what you think.

Very good web site, ok I know its the Bundeslige and they get a lot more tv money than us, but compared to what EPL Fans pay its v reasonable and structured to suit all needs.

  14. Let’s face it. We live in a command-based system, where we have been programmed since our earliest school years to become followers, not individuals. We have been conditioned to embrace teams, the herd, the masses, popular opinion — and to reject what is different, eccentric or stands alone. We are so programmed that all it takes for any business or authority to condition our minds to follow or buy something is to simply repeat a statement more than three or four times until we repeat it ourselves and follow it as truth or the best trendiest thing. This is called “programming” — the frequent repetition of words to condition us how to think, what to like or dislike, and who to follow.

Had to hit the hay before The Big Announcement.

Absolutely delighted at Brendan signing up for the next four years. I hope his trophy cabinet has got planning permission for an extension!

The other news from the club today, frankly not so good. Never mind the PR blunder knocking the gloss off the good news,it is totally unnecessary IMO.

Had the board continued the downsizing we would be looking at c30k season tickets. As it is,we have 60k. Congratulations to them for finally figuring that out!

    At a conservative average of £400 a pop,that’s £12m,this season and next.

£24m plus matchday spend, not even allowing for the huge EL income.

No need to take another £3m from the fans. And no need either for some people to simply tell those who have pointed it out to cough up or GTF-see the post at 451 from That Pillock.

The Lord giveth, and The Lord taketh away. I can accept that.

But He has a better grasp of PR than the Celtic board.

Jobo, agree, let’s enjoy watching the champions Play with Brendan leading the way :-)

I looked at the conditions on buying our new season tickets for 2017/18

Can I repeat, absolutely pig sick, (outwith the near 10% increase) that a 5 year old club, will again be treated differently from all others, and their fans be given preferential treatment – to come to our ground, abuse Celtic and its ground, to Celtic’s own fans – looks like I will miss 2 home games again next season

Anyway, let’s enjoy the moment as champions
