Brendan delivers again, why ex-Celt Miller isn’t getting a deal, Lions raffle

496

Yesterday we discussed how Brendan, like Jock Stein before him, liked to control the news agenda in the week of a big domestic game. Within hours Craig Gordon’s new contract, which was agreed some time ago, was announced.

This is genuine good news all round. The keeper has a new multi-year deal to look forward to. His manager has just out a substantial amount of confidence in him, in the shape of money. Brendan doesn’t need to worry about his others unsettling his goalkeeper.

Events like this impact on the dressing room too, in the opposite way to when a striker cannot get his contract extended beyond June.  Newco’s refusal to give Kenny Miller a new contract is totally understandable, but it will demotivate the player, and possibly others.

Miller’s agent moved for a new deal after the winter break, but the former Celtic striker has scored only six goals in 27 league games this season, two of those came when he had fresh legs in August.  Moussa Dembele scored as many in one and half games last month.  The stats don’t justify investing in a player who will be 38 this year, so I doubt that news management route will be open to Newco this week.

Still, I’m sure they’ll announce the appointment that director of football they have been briefing everyone about for weeks.  Failure to land him after being so open wouldn’t just be embarrassing, it would cast doubts on the board’s competency.

Lisbon Canvas Raffle Alert

In honour of Billy McNeill, who last week we learned is suffering from Alzheimers, Celtic artist Barry McGonigle (@BarryMcGonigle) has made this magnificent creation available for raffle in aid of Alzheimer Scotland.  Works like this are seldom open to raffle, instead they can reach over £1000 at auction, but it is such a magnificent piece, that we would like as many ordinary fans as possible to have a chance of winning.  Bertie Auld signed the canvas.

A few points:

The raffle is open for five days only – FIVE days!  So you stand an excellent chance of winning.

We ask for a minimum donation of £5.

You can enter through this MyDonate page, with the money going straight to Alzheimer Scotland.

Please make sure I have contact details from you (email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the word “Canvas” in the subject, just in case) to make sure I can get in touch if  you win.

I can deliver in central Scotland, at Celtic Park, or by collection in Lanarkshire.

It looks great online but trust me, the impact when you stand in front of it is substantial.  What a great present or keepsake for someone.

Good luck!

  1. Starry,

At that time the school leaving age had just been raised to 16 and the only way to leave ‘early’ was to have a job (or ‘opportunity’) to go to. Thus the Y.O.P (Youth Opportunity Scheme) scheme or ‘Yopper’ as it became known.

Paul exercised that right and went to Celtic as a 15 year old.

  2. Good evening CQN.

I got a message from Kerri and Meghan, here it is:

Hi Lennybhoy, it’s Eldiego’s ghirls here (see what we did there?) Thank you for your email. We have read many of the touching tributes, including your own. Perhaps if some kind soul wanted to send us a gift they could in time collate the beautiful messages on CQN?

We will both try to get to the Killy game but will take a bit of organising. Will let you know! As for the donations – we are having a collection for Marie Curie at the funeral. They were a breath of life to us in a dark time. Look forward to seeing you all there to celebrate our wonderful dad xx

I have contacted Paul re-collating the CQN posts, the only way is to cut paste in to a document. Anybody that is good at that sort of thing let me know please.

After we paid for the wreath and tribute we have so far now got £120.61, if anyone wants to add to this figure please contact me at lennybhoycfc@gmail.com and I will give you details. I will then send the money to Kerri and Meghan to forward to Marie Curie.

    Thanks for your donations CQN.

    Keep the Faith!

    My personal favourites are:

*Rangers need investment, that is exactly what is needed. I couldn’t tell you where it is going to come from, ………………. (subtext, it ain’t me!)

*During his time in management McCoist lost cup ties to Alloa, Forfar, Falkirk, Queen of the South and Raith Rovers as well as praising Charles Green’s involvement in the club.

*In 2012 McCoist snapped up shares at one pence, later in the year supporters were able to buy shares at 70p.

  8. I just heard McCoist explaining his part in their Res11 failing on Clyde SSB and providing JJ with his next article.

    Bear on bear.

  9. Daughter is at the pics and wife has just told me she is going to Zumba Class with a pal.

  10. STARRY PLOUGH on 8TH MARCH 2017 6:30 PM

STARRY, don’t know the answer to that. I remember Paul telling me that the ‘authorities’ were stalling on it, but obviously it was resolved. Big Bro Willie was already with Celtic at that time.

17th. March seems a good day to get an update from the docs. ‘On St Patrick’s day tough far away …. etc.’

Thoughts and prayers for yourself and your better half. Pass on our thoughts to her …………… or, better still, give her the computer, if she’s able.

    Sincere prayers, Joe.

Looking forward to the Barca game. They will need a bit of luck but i think they can do it. If the MSN turn up it could be a long night for PSG.

  12. Another voice in the wilderness, this time from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary seeking elusive tickets for the week-end game against Sevco.

Two friends of mine, good Celtic Bhoys have their flights & Hotels booked & paid for and had tickets promised but have been let down re the tickets.

The two Bhoys who happen to be brothers will travel anyway and hope against hope they get lucky.

If anyone can help, please let me know and I will make suitable arrangements.

Charlie Gallagher took the most important corner kick in Celtic’s history 50 years ago this evening…

    http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/?p=33311

    ————————————–

Charlie Gallagher took the two most important corners in Celtics history. I know this for two reasons, first my late father told me so when I told him I was going to an event that Charlie would be at. I attended said event and got a chance to speak to Charlie and told him of my Dads great memories of his contribution to Celtic. Secondly Charlie confirmed he did indeed take both corners, I think Charlie enjoyed sharing the memory. I know when I went home and told him my Dad did, he was chuffed to bits.

The corner you refer to was the second of these corners.

From the first Billy McNeil rose above the Dunfermline team to score the winner in the 1965 Scottish Cup Final.

And that is where legends were born.

  20. No fan of McCoist, why should I be. In all honesty, having looked at that Sky interview, he doesn’t look well. I don’t think the long days at the allotment have served him well.

  21. McCoist who I have any time for whatsoever, did say Liquidation which happened to RFC1872-2012, so why is it is in his interest to say this happened when all the media refuse to mention Liquidation ?
