Brendan takes an early psychological lead

332

I listened to Brendan give due credit to St Mirren at the weekend, and then to the granular analysis of his comment that they were the best Scottish opposition we have faced this season, and recalled an old story.

Archie Macpherson, a good friend of Jock Stein, told me that Jock would make sure he controlled the headlines in the week ahead of playing Rangers. He set the agenda by giving the media ready-made material.

Brendan’s assertion was not fanciful. Whatever has gone on in St Mirren’s season, their recent wins over Hibs and Ayr United, and their performance on at the weekend, they have clearly turned a corner. They were unequivocally better prepared for Celtic Park than most of the Premiership teams who have visited this season. If it was a stretch to say they were the best, at 56 minutes into the game it didn’t feel like one.

Kilmarnock (conceded 6), Motherwell (5), Newco (5), Aberdeen (4) and Hearts (4) were each clueless at Celtic Park this season, so there is a degree of accuracy in manager’s observation.

The Rangers Stein faced is a different proposition entirely from that which Brendan Rodger’s will be up against on Sunday (literally), but Brendan has taken an early psychological lead, whether he needs it or not.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

I hope and trust that the English footballing fraternity will agree with me that diddy teams getting humiliated 10-2 should have no place in the “Champions League. ”

  2. Good morning CQN.

I got a message from Kerri and Meghan, here it is:

Hi Lennybhoy, it’s Eldiego’s ghirls here (see what we did there?) Thank you for your email. We have read many of the touching tributes, including your own. Perhaps if some kind soul wanted to send us a gift they could in time collate the beautiful messages on CQN?

We will both try to get to the Killy game but will take a bit of organising. Will let you know! As for the donations – we are having a collection for Marie Curie at the funeral. They were a breath of life to us in a dark time. Look forward to seeing you all there to celebrate our wonderful dad xx

I will speak to Paul re-collating the CQN posts.

After we paid for the wreath and tribute we have so far now got £120.61, if anyone wants to add to this figure please contact me at lennybhoycfc@gmail.com and I will give you details. I will then send the money to Kerri and Meghan to forward to Marie Curie.

    Thanks for your donations CQN.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  3. Good morning friends from a dry calm and pretty clear skied (apart from the one single big cartoon like thick black cloud that’s rolling across the Hamilton direction as I look out) East Kilbride.

  4. Good morning CQN from a dull, mild but dry East Devon. No cartoon clouds down here.

‘Were you at the game caller?’

Seriously bud, did you see the match?

Football can be cruel, especially the aggregate system. Napoli were immense, got an early goal and were the wrong side of a list from reaching half time ‘through’.

Their efforts were immense. Just as flagged a wee bit down from a level of frenetically brilliant they got hit by the sucker punch. Then another. Tellingly from two traditional goals rather than attacking brilliance from the Real stars up front.

    Napoli came very close. But……….

Fitba’s not fair. Ask St Mirren last Sunday.

  12. Listening to BBC radio. They don’t half stick it to Arsenal, I know they got gubbed but it just seems similar to how they report us. Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool defeats seem to be dealt with in a more sevco like manner.

Yup 2 hours minimum of laughin when Derk and professionalism are mentioned together.

Derk highlighted a lot in unprofessionalism. He had a good opening half hour, the rest of his 800 or so minutes should have been spent on catalog and modelling shoots.

I am glad john park is away and that we are restructuring our club at devt level to try ensure more come through of our own.He is happy now his house in holland is finished as a person I wish him well in what he does, I dont see it at a high level in football

    Hope your good

Sorry, I was not at the game, did watch it on telly though.

I never said Napoli did not play well, I didn’t say Real Madrid were the better team. I did say it was an eye opener for the very fact that Napoli are a good side.

My comment was that Real Madrid “sorted them out”. A 6-2 aggregate score pretty much bears that out. Real found a way to beat a very good team , home and away. That is impressive in my eyes.

Football is a funny game indeed, cruel? No , it’s just a game. HH

  18. “That game was 23 years ago and the relative fortunes of Celtic and Rangers have changed dramatically since then. Rangers sunk into a mire of administration and liquidation after years of overspending and the cheers of their glory years now seem hollow and worthless as the extent of their financial chicanery became clear. Celtic rebuilt, restructured and will this season, baring a miracle, clinch their 12th league title of the 21st century.”

Greetings from an overcast /occasionally sunny Napoli . Mid teens .

Napoli even more chaotic than usual. Women striking to mark International Womens Day — skeleton public transport / schools closed , nurseries closed . Big demo planned for later .

The football — typical Napoli , play really ,really well and then switch off and gift the oppostion a goal. Game was over when Real Madrid scored. . Napoli players knew it , the support knew it . Piece of GIFUY stupidity from ex Rube player Morata after he scored Real’s third.. . Ego driven childish stupidity …
