Bribery and Scottish football

840

The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, yesterday made an extraordinary bid to bribe his way up the Scottish Football League (SFL), saying, “I would … be prepared to guarantee other clubs the ticket revenue equivalent of 300 Rangers fans turning up for matches.”

The SFL will soon vote on reconstruction and amalgamation with the SPL with a 12-12-18 structure on the table.  If this is rejected, no reconstruction will happen.  Should they win successive promotions Green’s club are due to spend three years in lower league football but if successful his bribe could shorten this to two seasons.

In support of his claim Green cites Stranraer, who won Division Two in 1993 and were promoted to Division One the following season.  The league structure changed that summer, from three to four leagues, resulting in more teams being relegated from Division One than was scheduled at the start of the season, but clubs were only promoted to the league they would have entered without reconstruction.

The Rangers are due to be promoted to the Second Division next season but are asking for direct access to the First Division.  They have made no suggestion as to what should happen to the club who finish in second place in this season’s Third Division.  Although Green’s statement references the Stranraer scenario, and an insistence that “the principle of promotion and relegation… should be enshrined”, he does not explain that Stranraer won the league and were promoted from Division Two to One, or that he wants promotion from Third to First.

It will surprise no one that Green believes “the SFL has shown real leadership in proposing” colts teams from the The Rangers and Celtic, although he has surprised me with the news that his club did not lobby for this suggestion.

I am sure the SFL lawyers would have reverted to the Fifa rule book, which is pretty clear that clubs can only be promoted on sporting merit, and explicitly prohibits clubs from paying for promotion.  Which is a pity, as I am sure the financial security of Green’s embryonic club would be greatly enhanced by promotion straight to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

We have been here before.

Scottish Football League clubs will decide their only structure but now more than ever we have to stand together as a club.  The direction and leadership of Celtic, and the supporters’ organisations, tested by often irreconcilable challenges at every turn, are exceptional.  Fantasies that the World Order is controlled between Celtic Park, Glasgow City Council and the Vatican are just that. Running Celtic is like steering the Titanic away from the iceberg with a pizza box, although if you speak to any numpty who has never done it you’ll get a different view. Despite all this, for the first time in decades we have a successful and sustainable football model.

We recruit and develop exceptional players who achieved what few of us expected this season.  The challenge for Celtic is to win the league and Cup and apply all energies on recruiting players for next season’s Champions League campaign.

Enjoy your football; Stand up for Celtic.

Looks like Dunfermline are headed for liquidation. What happens next – is there a vote to see if they get to play in the SPL next season? That’s the protocol isn’t it?

A cliche` competition between Danny Lennon and Owen Coyle would be a game of two halves…..

  6. Am very suspicious of the goings on at Dunfermline. Many many connections between them and the now dead RFC.

No accident Green mentioned them in his latest 4 hour long broadcast to the media yesterday… We should be vigilant…

    Let Chuckles buy Dunfermline’s membership.

All he would have to do is rename The Rangers as…….Dunfermline Athletic.

  8. Another day has passed and the silence from the fans organisations regarding Glasgow Roads allegations are deafening.

“The direction and leadership of Celtic, and the supporters’ organisations, tested by often irreconcilable challenges at every turn, are exceptional.”

That’s a very interesting statement Paul, I would counter that and state that we have absolutely no leadership from the club or the fans organisations!

The LNS fiasco, a mealy mouthed statement, 10 years of cheating swept under the carpet?

The continuing criminalisation of the support especially the Green Brigade, allegedly the club desperate to crush them using other fan groups or at least trying to use them with briefings and spin behind closed doors, showing video footage, highlighting individuals that “have to go” this is so depressing, nobody wins in this, nobody!

Both the Affiliation committee and the CSA committee were both party to these meetings where they both saw the footage and heard the clubs position regarding the Green Brigade, I would urge these guys to tell the truth, I would urge them to think what if it was their sons or daughter, brother or sister that was “kettled” or “assaulted” on Saturday and think if the clubs position is helping the situation or inflaming it?

Why after both the Affiliation and CSA representatives saw and heard the clubs stance regarding the Green Brigade did they not take that evidence back to their respective member CSC’s and get a consensus of opinion on an agreed strategy from both organisations?

How many CSC’s knew their elected committee members were party to those meetings and what was shown and said?

The rank and file fan has a right to know what’s going on, rightly or wrongly Glasgow Road has taken a big personal risk putting this information in the public domain, he has nothing to gain from doing so, there is no plus side for him, he is a Celtic supporter like the rest of us who could not accept the clubs stance and spin on the issue, especially after being party to the “video meeting” and felt frustrated that the Affiliation was not moving on the issue, so he resigned his position.

These guys may have thought they were doing the right thing of that I have no doubt, they are all good Celtic men and the club has put them in a terrible position, a horrendous own goal by the club and PL.

Again I would ask why, why do the club want rid of the Green Brigade, in what I have seen and “heard”, there absolutely and I mean absolutely is no doubt that is the case, the club want to get rid of the Green Brigade.

I have no doubt PL will be briefing his trusted few behind the scenes, Glasgow Road has stated that he would ask any of the guys party to these meetings especially the Affiliation meeting to look him in the eye and tell him he is lying.

I am so depressed regarding all that is going on, we are all losers in this, attendances are plummeting this issue will be the final straw for a lot of fans, it’s time for people to put some of their differences to the side and I include some of the entrenched views of the Green Brigade, they have to compromise as well, and the club truly and I mean truly has to engage with them so progress can be made.

If there is no movement in positions, I fear we will end up seeing the disbandment of the Green Brigade, then who next?

Anyway, has anyone heard of an author/journo called Christy Campbell, London born of Irish parents. I was doing a wee study of the Phylloxera aphid that attacked the vines across Europe in the middle of the nineteenth century, which he wrote along with Fenian Fire, this later book is about the British government plot to assassinate Queen Victoria, I will be reading that when I visit my namesake for a couple of weeks in Easter time, anyone passing by will be entitled to a glass of the most succulent rose’ to be tasted anywhere in the world. There is no mystery as to why the club would want rid of the GB.

Their views are regarded as being an embarrassment in relation to shirt sponsors etc.

  24. I had imagined that after the Club statement of a couple of weeks ago that meeting and dialogue would have taken place between the club ,polis and GB.

It now seems that theres been no meeting the resolve the issues .

It does seem like the club have allowed the situation to worsen.

They must have lost touch with reality.

  26. If as looks likely league re construction is not in place for next season, jabba traynor will have the opportunity to watch the rangers versus the airdrie in the 2nd division, his former love as opposed to his current love, quite ironic really given both are tribute acts,

  32. Ntassoolla,

I am afraid not but it is produced locally and I get it from a Cave in the next village, Cabernet d’ Anjou is the name of it and it is produced from the Cabernet Franc grape.

I have tasted some quite expensive rose’ wines but nothing seems to compare to this.

The Loire Valley produces more variety of wines and less expensive than all the New World combined.

    Your Thoughts?
