Brown and Lustig with international and Champions League conflicts

848

A year ago you and I discussed Scott Brown’s fitness with some concern for the season ahead. Since then the captain has not skipped a beat, his form and availability for selection have been without question.

It is clear he can cope with a Scotland game this weekend, and no doubt finish the season untroubled, but Scotland have an international against England on 10 June, two weeks after the Scottish Cup final, and four weeks before Celtic’s Champions League qualification campaign gets underway.

If Scott is to participate in all games, he will have a week off after the Scottish Cup final before being called into the Scotland squad, then two weeks before Celtic’s preseason training starts. For a player of his age, with his injury profile, this schedule would not allow sufficient recuperation ahead of a new season.

Selfishly, the most important thing to you and I, and to Celtic, is Champions League qualification, more so than the Scottish Cup, or than a season of invincibility, delightful, though both would be. What Brendan Rodgers backroom team need to do is prepare Scott as thoroughly as possible for the middle of July. Planning should start now.

If there’s another player in the Celtic squad who I would also like to ration his football it’s Mikael Lustig. The Sweden international is likely to be involved in both their international squad in June; a World Cup qualifier against France and a derby against Norway.

If Scotland fail to get a positive result against Slovenia on Sunday, Scott might consider it best to retire from the international stage, again. He and Mikael could do with a few weeks on the beach at the end of the season.

  1. ****Goals For Shay 2 – join the clique!****

Have you heard about our brand new competition, “Goals For Shay 2” which will commence on Friday 31 March? Over 90 folk have already joined the best clique on the net!

Simply pick 1 single unique team each week for the remainder of the league season and the entrant with the highest aggregate goals scored will take the top prize (roughly 90% of the total prizepot). And this time, to keep everyone fully involved, there will be a separate prize (about 10% of the total prize money) for the entrant who does best over the final 3 rounds. So even if you get off to a disappointing start, there’ll still be everything to play for as the weeks go on.

The cost of entry is £10 per team entered and this gets you one free joker which, when played, will double your score that week. You can also buy one additional joker for £5.

The prizepot will consist of 50% of the entry free, with 50% going to support Walk With Shay. All monies from the additional jokers will also go to help Shay.

Really, really simple to take part and all you need to do for now is just register your interest by sending a “can I play please” email to cqnpredictor@gmail.com . If you have a moniker or nickname that we can use to identify you once the competition starts then please tell us that. We’ll get back to you with full details within 24 hours.

And please feel free to tell your family and friends, share on Facebook, involve your work colleagues, etc. We are a competition Open to All.

Thank you for Walking With Shay.

  3. I would love to see a convincing victory( or any victory) for Scotland with our celts having the lead roles. Especially hoping SA and LG feature prominently and stake a claim for the jersey.

TBH like a few posters here I was once dissalutioned about supporting Scotland, due to biased ( cheating) SFA, tartan army’s booing of our players periodically etc, etc. I stopped watching the games and never even looked for their results for a while.

I must’ve had some sort of epiphany ( no laughing now ) or something and realised that is exactly what the huns want. I had let their hatred determine my actions!

I’m glad I woke up to myself , their hatred will never stop me supporting my team ever again!

    C’mon Scotland!!!

  4. Morning fholks, happy Mothers Day to all mums. First blog for a week. Please enjoy and share. Thankshttps://stayinguplateblog.wordpress.com/2017/03/26/from-underneath-the-southern-cross-they-came/

    Another cry ba ?

Good to know you have been following my posts as infrequent as they are and find them worthy of comment.

Hopefully I will be able to return the gesture someday. Obviously to those posts without the personal insults

Good morning, I realise that I have lost an hours sleep andhave a head like an Arapaho war dog; but why do the Huns want to prevent you from supporting Scotland.

Most ,if not all Huns canny stand the sight of Scotland. The days are loooooooog gone when the Huns had any affinity to the Scottish footie team.

HH. And happy Mother’s Day to all.( the PC brigade will be after me if I limit it to females only )

  7. Dharma Bam

Wonder if BR would allow him to play against us IF both teams get to the Scottish Cup Final?

Going by previous examples it looks like he would be told to sit it out……would BR do the same?

Rules is rules, but there should be room for manoeuvre within them.

If Celtic and Hibs both make the final I hope both clubs will do their bit to allow Efe his chance to shine. And that the SFA do likewise.

Give it a month and start the petition!

  9. Hunderbirds are Gone on

    Morning all.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I was in The Camp Nou a few years ago, when we narrowly lost 2-1, with the winner scored in injury time.

Efe Ambrose was the best player on the park that night.

    HUNDERBIRDSAREGONE

Sometimes confidence matters most, games can be played in your head as well as on the pitch

If you go out there just hoping you don’t screw up,yer toast. Sadly that was what Efe was reduced to.

He is a much better player than that. And has the medals to prove it.

I hope his return to form at Hibs gets him on the radar at a club who will appreciate him.

  11. Great to see Efe playing as he can once again.

Thankfully, too, under Neil Lennon’s tutelage, as, imo, it was Neil’s foolish decision to play him in the CL so soon after playing in Africa that destroyed his confidence.

  12. Rumoured Scotland 11 tonight

    Gordon

    Tierney

    Martin

    Mulgrew

    Robertson

    Fletcher

    Brown

    Snodgrass

    Armstrong

    Forrest

    Griffiths

I make that 6 current Celtic players, 1 former Celtic player, 1 Celtic youth product, 2 Celtic fans and Russell Martin.

If it is correct, has there ever been a more Celtic biased Scotland side ever?

  13. If someone ever gets that flux capacitor build im sure Efe would jump in and go join his Nigerian teamates to celebrate their success in 2013.

Normally its a bad tackle or unfortunate injury that can end a guys career but getting on that plane and trying to play v Juve effectively done that for Efe with us.

Kind idea but no thanks. Not for me.

Besides, you can’t continually claim for the team from the Southside to play by the rules then ask for change just because it suits ye.

    Good morning

Do you think Celtic fc and it’s players over the years have been treated fairly by the SFA/tartan army?

  16. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    AURORABOREALIS

    Aye,I take your point.

Slight difference being that we would not have been asking for a favour,we would merely be giving a potential cup final opponent a full squad to choose from.

IMO,a nice gesture and nothing more. Academic since he’s cup-tied anyway.

  17. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    DBHOY

Well,as an example,Bobby Murdoch was treated fairly by the SFA about a dozen times.

    So,naw. Not really.

  18. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on 26TH MARCH 2017 12:13 PM

Equally fair treatment of the Legendary Jimmy McGrory 7 caps , 6 goals

  19. Off on bizniz this week and will eventually find myself in the vicinity of Playa Del Ingles or Maspalomas down in Gran Canaria next Sunday when the Hearts game is on.

Anybody know the recommended Celtic pubs for catching the game – either PDI or Maspalomas?

  20. For a club , that’s supposed to be Skint, were are they getting the cash to get a new manager, etc, also looking for a 3rd coach,so were is the cash coming from,i don’t normally write about them, but they are a bunch of sleekitt of so and S Of B,or maybe Glib,is money laundering, which wouldn’t surprise any of us,

    Late `60s .

    _____

Not sure about that one Macjay.

Paddy Crerand mentioned ( on a jinky dvd ) the bias of the national selectors of that era and how they would sometimes pick 12 Rangers ( rip ) players even though only 11 could play in the Saturday

  22. DBHOY,

No I don’t think we have been treated fairly over the years. The stats will prove that. But they now need us more than we need them ( BB’s post @ 11. 44 hrs will emphasis that )

But the Huns have no love of the Scottish team and very few follow them, so with respect I cannot see that as an issue for us supporting or not supporting the National team.

Yes I witnessed booing of our players and fans wearing Hun scarfs, but that was decades ago.

    HH to you.

  23. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    DBHOY

Aye,but they were used to the twelfth man as the ref.

  24. Greenpiñata

I suppose for me it was mostly the historical treatment of our players eg jinky asking not to be selected due to the stick he got from the Scottish fans and the ridiculously low amount of caps the lions got. I know it was still happening with McStay and Collins in the 90s. Not sure how it is in the stands these days TBH

Also the SFA’s well documented treatment of youn govan club in recent times as well leaves a bad taste

Just to clarify, the huns in the tartan army that booed our players weren’t all rangers ( rip ) fans/huns.

Like I said earlier, I will support Scotland regardless of the actions of the hun

  27. I note that the SFA are running free busses from Glasgow town centre to Hampdump. This is something I have been advocating Celtic to look at.

While I want Scotland to win and will be watching the game I don’t support them enough to make the effort to actually go and see them.
