Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

Griffiths won’t be playing on Sunday, he was signed after the 5pm deadline for registration.

  4. For two years the only player outside of Celtic Park I rated and enjoyed watching was Griffiths. It started with this performance when Hibs were bottom of the league:

Now we have him it can’t be bad.

It should also bring out the best in Stokes, 1 a wee bit of competition & 2. a centre forward to link up with again.

    Couldn’t agree more

I advocated on here several weeks ago that Balde should be given 10 guaranteed games – much like Mr Stein gave the QSGang – without fear of being dropped in order to show what he can do

NL is having a laugh bringing him on for 5-10 mins at a time.

On a similar note, if we now have Pukki, Fridjonsson and Griffiths as recent recruits, where does this leave the much loved by some in these parts Stokes?

I note some revisionism going on with more criticism of him of late.

  7. Big Wavy,

    Yeh that’s true enough,

I Live in England and hate the premiership, and what it has done to the rest of Football, Shite teams like Norwich and Palace can out price us for a player and for wages. I see Celtic and we are a huge club in every way except for money, Even teams like spurs are looked at as bigger than us in England. The problem with football now is money matters, look at sky they shove the prem Pr down your throat along with how much money is spent every window… when did that ever matter?! 126 million spent, who gives a f**k.

We made the top 40 deloitte most valuable whatever it is…. for us to do that is a massive achievement. Give us the exposure to a big TV deal we would be the biggest around up there with United, Madrid and Barca. I am waiting for the arse to fall out of the prem or us go to the conference and work our way up in a 5 year plan for example, id suffer that!

    Rant over!

Thought they stayed open late on deadline day ?

  9. I’m fairly happy with things so far. In my opinion we are strengthening the team and if they play at the tempo shown against killie and in recent matches what’s not to like?

Is Joe Ledley definitiely away? If so, best wishes and thanks for all your efforts in the Hoops.

“Balde should be given 10 guaranteed games – much like Mr Stein gave the QSGang – without fear of being dropped in order to show what he can do”

When did Mr. Stein ever guarantee anybody 10 games with Celtic?

Did the QS team all graduate to undroppable with Mr. Stein’s handling?

Vic Davidson waited 5 years with us to play 20 odd games. John Gorman did not get any games and we had no great replacement available for Tommy G when he was sold. George Connnelly was 20 before he regularly appeared and our fans are now demanding that Calvin Miller gets game time. Paul Wilson was 8 years with us and you rarely felt he had cemented a starting place. Lou Macari in 4 years with the first team only managed one season where he played in over half the league games.

Danny McGrain & David Hay both managed to break into the team and stay there for a decent spell. Typical of our luck that they were both right backs.

Kenny D was arguably our best ever player.

I make that 3 outstanding players. Two who did fine but should have done better (Macari & Connelly) and ac ouple who did not reach potential (Wilson & Davidson) plus one who did not get a chance.

On the subject of whisky I cannot believe Virgin Trains don’t sell whisky on their trains.

On a return journey yesterday from Warrington I was advised that they only stock vodka, gin, wine and beer in their shops but not whisky.

Outrageous and Alex Salmond, if you’re lurking, get this sorted:-)

Q1: As usual a nice easy one to get everyone warmed-up:

Name Celtic’s scorers when we clinched our first away victory in the Champions League?

(1 point for each correct answer and a bonus 2 points for the first to answer with all 3 correct).
