Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

Cliftonville Celt, Nice one, he’s one of the most gifted gaelic footballers i’ve ever seen! Went to All Ireland with my father Derry v Cork & poor Enda got a box in the face from one of the Cork players. That really woke him up & he dominated & drove Derry to the win, a great day!

NL didn’t crack any smiles on being interviewed on BBC about signing of LG.

Gave a fair impression of someone who was settling for second best.

hun skelper, maybe one day Peter will let Lenny buy a player! Champions League qualification hasn’t got any easier since last year….

Hun skelper. I think Lennie is realistic and knows you dont allways get your first pick but if Griffiths is second choice he is a pretty good second choice. H.H.

Joe Filippis Haircut, do you think he was second choice? I think he was last choice before no one, sorry to be so sceptical. He has my backing but does it mean we go scrambling in the summer for a goal scorer, new goalkeeper, centre half or all three like last year!!!!!!!

hun skelper we have seen 4 first team picks leave in last 2 windows & only 1 signing actually good enough to take their place.

Silly man for making such a crass statement.

I wonder if its real marble. Could be worth couple of hundred quid towards paying the face painter and fatties pie bill.

  20. Lennon on Griffiths “He represents good value for money ………”

Here we go again, don’t doubt for a minute how far we have slipped as a club. Champions League ambitions but we always seem to shop at Poundland. Unfortunately all our other ‘bargain’ strikers seem to sit in the stand or the bench, so I hope LG is different

Am I the only one feeling like this?

  21. Very pleased with the performance of the club during the transfer window.

Thinking back over the last 2 seasons (or more), central defense was our biggest problem. Neil Lennon fixed that with minimal outlay. He also fixed midfield to an extent by adding the muscle of Wanyama and the skill of Ki, but those players were sold on for huge profit. This is always the risk of finding good players early and giving them the platform to succeed. We are going to struggle to hold onto both Efe and Virgil for more than a couple of seasons.

The current side has been lacking a creative midfielder and a goal scorer. We have signed both in this window.

Congrats to Neil and thanks to the Board behind him for continuing to ensure our club is on a solid financial foundation.

It could be much much worse.

paolosboots. I think he was at least second choice the Turkish deal seemed to be the first choice but it stalled.I however, think he will be a good signing and him being at the club will get others likes stokes to buck up his ideas.Who we will need in the summer we dont know as it depends who we move on that is the nature of things if you buy players improve them then sell on for profit.H.H.

  25. CELTIC are delighted to confirm the signing of Scotland internationalist Leigh Griffiths on a four-year deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 23-year-old striker is regarded as one of the country´s hottest properties, having enjoyed a prolific spell at Hibernian last season, which earned him Scotland´s Young Player of the Year prize.

He has continued to bang in the goals for Wolves since returning to the Midlands in the summer and will now add further firepower to Celtic´s in-form attack.

And in his first exclusive interview with the official Celtic website, the new Bhoy spoke of his excitement at getting his Hoops career underway.

“I´m over the moon,” he said. “It´s been a long time coming. Ever since I heard Celtic were interested there was only one place I wanted to play and I´m just glad it´s done now.

“It was the middle of December and my agent gave me a phone and said Celtic could be interested in January and I have just been counting down the days.

“Unfortunately, it´s taken to the last day but I´m just glad that it´s been done now and I can´t wait to get started.

“We are the Scottish champions to begin with, and this is a massive club with a massive fanbase and a massive stadium. I have watched the Champions League nights on the TV and there is no better place to play. This is where I want to be.

“I was just really keen. I know what it takes to become a Celtic player. I had a great season last year at Hibs and then I have went down back the road and started scoring goals as well.”

Griffiths struck 28 times for the Easter Road side during the previous campaign in which he underlined his qualities as a natural-born finisher, scoring every type of goal. Nothing gives him greater satisfaction.

“I want to bring goals – that´s what I am all about and what I love doing,” he said. “I did it last season for Hibs and have done it for Wolves and now it´s my time to shine in the Hoops and hopefully I can do it.

“I am just thankful to get my chance here and hopefully I can prove that I am a good signing and start scoring goals for fun.

“My message to the fans is that I´m looking forward to playing and scoring goals and winning things here.”

Having successfully completed his medical to become Celtic´s third signing of the January transfer window, following Holmbert Fridjonsson and Stefan Johansen, Griffiths will get put through his paces alongside his new team-mates at Lennoxtown tomorrow.

“I trained yesterday and have been involved with Wolves games up to now and have done all my fitness tests,” he said. “I have been here as an away player but it will be nothing like running out as a home player, and I can’t wait.”
