With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete. As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.
I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month. Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.
We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.
Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player. The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now. I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s. Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.
Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

The moment Celtic signed Stefan Johansen it was clear that a deal had been done to sell Joe Ledley.,The rumours of Crystal Palace were for once accurate. and when all the ‘undisclosed fees’ are totted up, we’ll have spent little.

I always respect your posts, however I do not accept that we are deliberately not preparing properly.
I have no doubt we have been frustrated many, many times in the transfer window.
You have seen the figures. Crazy money and wages for average players. Any half decent striker will move for > £10m with his agent achieving numerous add on clauses. The differential between our club and the EPL clubs is widening.
Remember most clubs have elaborate and wide reaching scouting networks, so we have to be better and take chances. Hence all the young projects.
We cannot even begin to compete in this rat race. Even £6m will only buy you a project or a striker in the twilight of his career.
Ambitious players with no affinity to the club will use us as a stepping stone in fulfilling their ambitions elsewhere. This is indeed a dilemma as we have to have European Football.
e.g. of what we are up against :- Newcastle a similar sized club only take 15% of their income through the gates.
Although it is difficult and I share your concerns; IMO our lack of marquee signings is not for the lack of trying.

Two and a half million for Joe is good business and what you would expect a cash rich EPL club to pay for one of our top senior players in his prime – 800,000 grand in earlier reports was a joke.

Greenpinata, I have no doubt that Celtic try to get players but there comes a time when the excuses become annoying. At some point, we have to buy somebody who can create from midfield for example. Therefore we have to spend extra. In no way do I support obscene spending but I think we can afford to go for a 3-4 million player.
VVD came to us. Celtic remains an attractive place to go. We can also pay decent wages in comparison to clubs from other smaller countries. Have a good night.

I would imagine it takes a lot of hard work to sign a top player. I would further imagine Celtic focus on a single top player for a given position. We can’t afford to buy two and feel it is unethical to lead someone up the garden path, pretending to sign them, but only talking in case our first option fails.
We had talks with our top traget over a period of time and failed in our efforts. Stopped abruptly according to our manager.
That left us with little time to work on another top target but we did manage LG.
It was not for the want of trying that this window didn’t end better.

Normally if you spend a large chunk of your budget on whatever, you will persevere before consigning it to the dustbin. With MB he was treated as if we got him for free, the odd 10 minutes here and there, then out on loan for a couple of times, then paid off. It makes you wonder if we really did pay 2.2M for him and if we did, suprising that we can just write it off with hardly a murmur.
