Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

Signings or no signings, qualification can still be a gamble. I seem to recall a team from a backwater league beating Barcelona a few years back, stunned the football world to its core.

No matter who we play I always believe we can win, but it being sport anything can happen and were we are concerned frequently does. Morton?

My point, probably not explained properly sorry, is that I do not see a top line CEO “gambling” with £15-£20m if he can possibly avoid being in that position. I have absolutely no proof that what I believe is correct, however I think that logically my position is the more likely one.

I could be wrong, to hear my wife talk it is my default setting. If someone can show reasonable proof of my error I would have no problem admitting my mistake and backing those who wish to see the back of Celtic’s CEO and Board.

did sky just say Celtic have accepted a £2.5M bid from CP for Ledley?

    Good if true.

JJ, on Wednesday did Mikael talk at half time and indicate when he’s coming back?

Sunday could be the day ACGR wins the bigee.

  4. People saying we are gambling with CL qualification.I dont believe so.Idid last season and whinged about it since then.Last year we had a group of players bought in who did not fearure. We were without our 3 main players from the previous campaign.A shambles.

This year we have a settled team.A stronger defence than I can remember,a very good midfield,a STRIKER,who will have time to bed in.We wont be facing any great teams.Unless we sell any of our stars I would say qualifying is extremely doable. After that, its in the lap of the gods with the draw.

    Very happy with the window.

Very nice to hear from you. I’d be on here more often if all interactions were so polite and open minded.

I do take your point, and agree that this year has been among his best. I guess last year, with Wanyama around and injuries, allowed me to discount his contribution somewhat.

I’d not want to be seen as denigrating his contribution to Celtic. He’s be good for us, and there have been occasions this season where I felt my own slightly negative view of him was unfair.

He could have done more for us, indeed, more for himself, in my opinion.

Expect I’ll enjoy seeing him pop on MOTD with the odd goal.

While we’re talking, I’ve not seen one of your match ratings or preferred line-ups for a while. I thought we were on to something earlier in the season with Brown and Mulgrew, both for Celtic and Scotland.

If you require ” reasonable proof ” I don`t think you will need to be admitting any mistake.

Being bombastic does not constitute ” reasonable proof ” even if some on here seem to think so.

If they are and Johanson and Griffiths settle in we’ll be well ahead of last year

  12. paolosboots FC before PLC on

Owen I agree to an extent, I don’t want to see the back of the board or PL but i want to see more of a connect with the fans more FC than PLC. However the soundbites coming out from PL that we will aim to exit each window stronger, that all monies brought in from transfers will be reinvested in the team & Lenny saying we have £6m to spend on the “right player” in my opinion is only talk, maybe i’m stupid & i cant see it!!!. I have seen £78m come into the club & want to see a proven striker but by investing wisely/properly we can mitigate many risks agreed not all. IMO we are leaving too much to chance for CL qualification in a World Cup year time will tell.

I didn`t here what he said either…….I was looking for a steward so that I could collect my £12,000. Couldn`t find one so threw my ticket in a bin and when I returned to my seat, Michael had finished speaking. Bit of a sod, really.

didn’t finish my question… although you probably got the gist, what do make of their partnership. To me, it looks good enough to compete at the highest level, especially with Virgil behind them. If we can just find that quality front pairing/trio…

In saying that, it alway seems like we’re a couple of quality players away.

  18. paolosboots FC before PLC on

I don’t think if Ledley & Sammi go we can afford to let any more players go. We let 3 go before CL qualification & we nearly missed it. There has to be continuity &other players have to settle in & get european experience if they haven’t got any. I fully believe thats what won us the match against Karagandy so small changes if or when we have to imo.

  19. If joe goes, all the best. I called him a ‘bin man’ recently. With gratitude and no disrespect cos he did carry out the necessary, often unseen, too seldom appreciated ‘tidying up’. A bit like Cantona’s view of Deschamps as. ‘water carrier’.

Shame we seldom saw the attacking rind into the box that he made before coming to us. The more so as it’s a feature of the game that we so often lack. (Same could be said of Broonie in that respect IMHO.)

And joe was often the culprit in my favourite bugbear of the nothing pass sideways or JUST BEHIND THE MAN.

So all the best joe. ‘Enjoy’ the EPL, Palace and try to avoid the drop.

On we go. Players come and go. Celtic is eternal.

I agree on both counts but the difference in price is likely to be worthwhile and relatively small beer if its an English premiership team in for him.

For the record, would really not want to see either go. We should be building our CL qualification campaign and , hopefully , CL campaign itself around them and FF, fairly obviously.

Think we dodged a bullet with Doyle going on loan to QPR. LG has nearly a 1/2 ratio everywhere he has gone and at 23 he has plenty of room for improvement if he “screws the nut” (oops did i say that!)

The disconnect from some fans is something that needs addressing certainly.

As regards reinvestment of sales/profits the accounts, for any lurking huns they are what businesses that are still trading publish at the end of each year to tell everyone how they have done for the year, show a breakdown of income and outgoings. I am not an Accountant but as far as I am aware you cannot easily, if at all, ring fence sales income and use it solely to purchase new players.

Neil made the £6m comment in reply to a journalist who had asked “did the price tag for Stephen Fletcher put us off?” If Neil had said yes he would have been castigated, instead he replied that if we needed to we could pay that sort of price for the right player. At no point did he say that we would pay £6m+ for a player this, or anyother, transfer window.

£78M may have come into the club from player sales in the period you say, however we have paid wages, electricity and utility bills, catering costs maintenance costs and tax and NI owed to HMRC, to any lurking huns thi… ach you get the picture, and a host of other bills. The idea that money comes into the club and just sits there in an account waiting to be spent is far from the truth. We are in a very healthy financial position at present. If we spend money I am happy however I refuse to get caught up in the hype around transfer window time or get hung up on “nett spend”.

  28. Welcome Leigh….as soon as you pull on the Hoops you have my support.

Not your fault that Sir Peter of Bonus has decided to sit on a huge wedge of the plc’s Earnings Before Depreciation Amortisation and Tax.

Forster and Van Dijk will definitely be sold in the summer, anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.

Making me wonder if Celtic are building a contingency fund for something or maybe have a contingent liability in the accounts……hmmmmm.
