Business complete after Griffiths

1474

With Leigh Griffiths set to sign in the next few moments our business for the January transfer window is complete.  As well as Leigh, we added 20-year-old Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjobsson, and 23-year-old Norwegian left-midfielder, Stefan Johansen.

I expect Johansen and Griffiths to be holding down a starting place no later than next month.  Johansen’s case will be made all the more straightforward if Joe Ledley accepts an offer from Crystal Palace, although he may choose to wait until the summer before leaving.

We’ll be wondering why we signed Mo Bangura years from now, he patently didn’t look a player at Celtic.

Neil Lennon has a fixer-upper with Leigh, a player he has taken a number of references for and believes he can turn into a productive Celtic player.   The player’s personal history is something he has to put behind him now.  I’ve read many comments on this subject over the last few days, with some empathy, but it’s just as well Twitter wasn’t around in the 60s, 70s or 80s.  Some of our heroes from past eras have been more than a tad off-colour in my earshot.

Time for Leigh to get onto the field and do what he does best.

    Incidentally, I believe LG will score a barrowload for us. FACT.

    ——————————-

    No need for the exclamatory ‘FACT’ at the end.

    There’s no one on here doubts that you believe LG will score a barrowload.

    Whether he does or not we will see in the coming months.

    I also believe he will.

  3. Bhoys and Ghirls,

    If Joe Ledley is indeed going to Palace then thank you and all the best.

    Tony Pulis will keep Palace up, but a word of warning.

    Don’t underestimate and argue with Mr Pulis; he may look a take on with his glasses and baseball hat but just ask James Beattie.

    His head is not just for keeping his hat and glasses on.

  5. Very poor business. All this talk of how much the club has to spend – absolute rubbish. Preparing for the qualifiers – strengthen defence. Well we lost Joe Ledley. Can anyone out there say how that has strengthened our defence. Pathetic. I do not support the acquisition of Griffiths as the players are supposed to act as role models to the fans. I think we have another Stokes with the potential for a few goals, but also a whole lot of trouble.

    It was , however, supposed to be a touch ironic, placing “FACT” after a sentence containing an opinion.

    For the record I actually like griffiths as a player and at least we bought a striker. But time after time the club lie and mislead us……..good enough for CL qualification???? Mmmmmmm.

    ==================================================

    Of all the ‘cheap’ buy sout there at this time of year, LG was one of the most sensible – we know he has quality and commitment, will never shirk responsibility or hide while wearing the Hoops.

    Good enough for CL qualification? – yes, going by the level of opposition we will face to get there.

    Whether he’s good enough to compete in the CL group stages – well, that’s the challenge the bhoy’s now taken on, to prove himself at the highest level; if he manages it, Celtic will be the beneficiaries.

    If LG can emulate Scott McDonald’s time in a Celtic shirt, it’ll be win-win all round.

    We didn’t lose Joe Ledley. He left of his own accord and we couldn’t keep him.

    We can’t match the wages – that’s what it comes down to.Regrettably.

    I’d rather get a fee for him now than have him go for nothing in the summer (and I liked the guy)

    I can exclusively reveal that the Greggs at Central station IS open till midnight, and that our sources have confirmed that super salary WILL be swooping before the Greggs doors SLAM SHUT!!!

    The plastic storage box from homebase will be filled by midnight.

    Super salary said; “Absolutely, there is no doubt we will be aiming to get in reinforcements before the Greggs window slams shut. We’re well served in the sausage roll department, have no doubt about that, but we know that we’re a little bit short when it comes to stake bakes.

    “When you’re manager of a club with 140 weeks of unbroken history you cannot accept not being prepared. When I walk into my office at murray park tomorrow, I need to know, the FANS need to know, that there will be enough Empire biscuits and Tipsy cakes to get me through to lunch”.

  12. Greetings Kojo. I hope that life is good for you out there in Americanland. Hopefully I am wrong about LG in Europe. However I remain to be convinced that he can cope with the CL game. Yet I also had the same reservations about Scott McDonald and he did ok in Europe.

    Kayal, I shared the same views as you in previous windows but I am not happy with our transfer dealings. We have already won the league next season. Therefore, Europe is where our excitement comes from. Given that every year we struggle against mediocre teams in the qualifiers, surely our staff should have made better preparations in advance of the CL qualifiers.

    Have you raised this alarming discovery with anyone else? Serious Fraud Office? AIM? Afterall if no one but you has uncovered this matter it is your duty to report it to the authorities or you could be held as complicit with the scam.

  15. What to do with Joe -I wont go Ledley now? Stick him in reserves and give other a chance or let him keep his place in the team after his top-class showing on Wednesday?

  16. As somebody who advocated the signing of Leigh Griffiths last summer (not greeted with an amazing and resounding agreement I must admit) then I wish him well!

  17. paolosboots FC before PLC on

    Owen, I understand that in terms of £78m but that isn’t taking into consideration when budget planning coming from PL directly. We have season tickets, tv, merchandising, pools, food & beverage, sponsors, etc etc as revenue streams so this £78m was not accounted for, I & many others feel that money has to be spent on our forward line, the rest of the team is doing well, commons has outscored everyone & stokes & pukki are not doing it. We don’t have to spend to win the league but if thats the sole length of our ambitions then let the fans know. If its qualification for the CL then invest accordingly if we do then 9/10 times we should beat the other qualifiers, we can have an off day but the qualifiers should be weighted in our favor from a seedings perspective. Every year we qualify the revenue generated should makes us stronger and we progress as a club. The other side is that if we don’t qualify for Europe we then we regress, have to sell players, fans will be less likely to attend games, less attendances, peripheral spend, exposure for players which increases sell on values playing in CL regularly, & then what happens are we are then left treading water till the tribute act arrives?

  18. I will add that Celtic gained a lot of exposure out in Russia because of the CL. People often mention our win against Barcelona to me. We simply should not risk our entry into the CL by not preparing properly. Normally I am a firm supporter of the way our club is run but I ain’t a happy man tonight.

    I guess always do what’s best for Celtic. So maybe use ‘going aways’ if it suits but bed in the newies and young ‘uns as the main priority.

    If joe or Sammi or others stay till their contracts end, we still pay them handsomely every week. So we call the shots. They ‘Work 4 us’ do to speak.

    Genuine question – apologies if its been asked (im still at work so havent been following the blog much but I have a burning question!)

    Peter Lawell is substantially bonused based on non footballing KPI’s as we all know.

    Will there be a KPI linked to and will he therefore lose out in any way for the following;

    2 x Assets valued (arguably) at £8m 1 year ago were both retained.

    Same 2 x Assets (arguably) at £5m 5 months ago were both retained.

    Fast forward the clock 6 months and said assets will have left the club for a combined total of £700k.

    Having a deadline as to when new contracts are agreed is a criteria I would have assumed was rigidly in place but it doesnt seem to be.

    For such a tightly run financial organisation I would be shocked to learn that we could literally allow ourselves to lose £7-8m worth of capital – considering thats 10% of annual turnover on a very good year!

    I would be interested in your thoughts because you are obviously such a keen supporter of how Celtic are run (thats not me saying I am not or getting a dig in – its just a very real concern over what I feel is a glaring omission by Celtic PLC)

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Been chewing over the same bones for a while too……….take McGeady, Ki Sung, Wanyama and couple of other 1-2M disposals together with our and our CL appearances out of the equation and there nothing remarkable at all about Lawell’s performance (other than his 1M bonus based pay-packets)

    If fat Sally didn’t blow a 20 point lead we may well not be sitting in the position we are in today IMO. I get much satisfaction that he did of course blow it but still PL’s performance is nothing special.

    As for 1M being the “going rate”…………who continues to peddle this? Him?

    He has probably the most captive customer base on planet earth and he has managed to alienate half of them………..

  23. On a more positive note, at least we have signed a goalscorer as well as our Norwegian midfielder. Oh, and I am reading a quite entertaining book by Kurt Vonnegut called ‘God bless you Mr Rosewater’.

    2.2 Million, came highly recommended (HL), and thats him sent packing. Did he get a fair crack of the whip I wonder. An extremely expensive flop, and the evidence that he’s a definite dud has never been produced, imho. Still, onwards and upwards.

More than happy with LG, dont put the radio on, spew at it already, watershed moment for us, we must expect cheap signing from here on in, I tell ye what spew, we’ll skin ourselves and destroy scottish football like yer favorite team.
