I was speaking to someone with only a notional interest in football last week who complained about football fans logic on several fronts including the notion of History.
I was asked, “What does it matter if a Rangers Newco playing at Ibrox being supported by the same people have an intangible claim to what happened in the past?
“Their memories remain, they cannot relive the past, what matters most is the future.”
Only a non-football fan could think like this, of course. History is the context for whatever happens today, without it, the game is diminished, but we are now in a fascinating debate. In practical terms, Rangers history could become quite a burden with the next few weeks.
The SPL are currently undertaking an inquiry into alleged illegal registration of players at Rangers during the 13 years before Craig Whyte rescued the club from the old board. Hundreds of football matches could have been played, many trophies ‘won’ with footballers ineligible to play.
If these allegations are proven, games involving ineligible players will be marked as 3-0 defeats. So much for the history, but what about the punishment?
Our friends at STV suggest that the SPL hold the view that the transfer of a league share from a liquidated company to a Newco would inherit historical rights from the liquidated party’s past. For Rangers Newco, this would include penalties for around 500 games played by Rangers FC with invalidly registered footballers.
The tariff of which could sink even the healthiest balance sheet.
But still, if liquidated, Rangers FC, founded around 1872 and incorporated in 1899 would cease. Newco can play wherever they like, it would be a new club. The law would protect it from misdeeds of the old company while any assets, such as the badge design, film archive or historic Arsenal shares could be purchased by any third party, including Newco. And before you bid, owning the badge design does not make you Rangers any more than if you acquired Rangers SPL share.
We’ve been told you can buy and sell history in recent weeks which is clearly nonsense but in finding a path through this subject you need to ask what is in the power of each and any organisation or group to affirm.
The SPL can transfer a share in the league and, in conjunction with the SFA, player registrations. Both can also impose outstanding disciplinary measures.
Duff and Phelps can sell the badge design independent of the league share.
Craig Whyte can sell the stadium independent of all of the above.
No one can sell, buy or transfer 140 years of history, which is why football fans recoil at suggestions of a Newco replacing their team.

When is the SPL reporting on their investigations into double contracts?
Surely this must be cleared up before any valid meeting can take place regarding new SPL rules?

Anyone else think we should change that Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh song to sing the names of the notes, like Jobo has laid out?
When you know the notes to sing, you can sing most anything.
Plus, if we do that Sound of Music thing, Alex Salmond and the SFA are bound to like us a wee bit better. Works for the soi-disant Tartan Army.

That is amazing and slightly OCD on your part… :)

I thought Maloney would struggle at Wigan – a small skilful player at a relegation threatened team. I was wong as usual.
On past experience, though, he will probably get injured again and lose his form/confidence as before.
BTW, if Wigan get relegated, they will really struggle.
Plenty of empty seats when Man U from up the road are playing.
I remember the same when they played Chelsea on the opening day of 2007/8 (or similar).

no idea of what you are doing during the day, but as there isn’t much to do in Carnoustie, you could drive into Dundee. it is only about 6 miles into the city (carnoustie is almost a suburb of Dundee… it is right next to broughty ferry). If you go into the City, drive up to Lochee, there will be a large number of bars showing the football. Dundee is one of only a very few places in Scotland where we comprehensively outnumber the huns.

I have enjoyed the agony of RFC as much as any Celtic supporter, but on resober reflection, I want them to remain in the SPL. I don’t want them deducted point or TV income either. I want them to take a 25 year mortgage out and repay their debts – probably to the tune of £5-6m/year.
They are the team I enjoy playing most and certainly the team I enjoy beating most.
25 years of repaying their debts would be morally right. We would almost certainly beat them extensively over that period. By not deducting any points we would be beating them fairly and squarely.
I’d be 70 when they repaid their mortgage – that would do me fine.
Just pay your bills!

I think what you have suggested is an option. I would only be happy with that though if they are stripped of all titles won when an EBT was used. It’s financial doping (cheating) and they should get stripped of those honours. The players can keep their medals but the club should be stripped of the titles.

googybhoy good question,he even said he would buy his season ticket for next year whatever,I Blame the vales Kathelic schools got to go take care one and all
CultsBhoy
Good idea, but no one involved in their future has at any point expressed the slightest inclination to repay their debts, whether through a 25-year mortgage or any other means.
It seems this is not on any bidder’s list of options to be entertained. They are not interested in any scenario that precludes their walking away leaving their bills unpaid.
Rangers: Uefa confident Scots bodies will deal with problems
By Jim Spence
BBC Scotland
European football’s governing body is confident the Scottish authorities will deal with Rangers’ current plight.
Uefa, in a statement, stressed that issues regarding club licensing and financial fair play falls under the authority of the Scottish governing bodies.
It said it was aware of the “difficult financial situation” at Ibrox.
Rangers have been in administration since February and Duff & Phelps has delayed naming a preferred bidder.
The delay follows proposed changes to sanctions for insolvent clubs.
The SPL will consider new proposals for financial fair play at a meeting on 30 April.
SPL PROPOSALS
Minimum of 15 points deducted from any club entering administration
10-point penalty for two seasons for any club that transfers its share in the SPL to a new company
75% reduction in payments to any club relaunched as a new company for a period of three seasons
Requirement for clubs to pay players on time and to report any failure to pay wages
Requirement for clubs to report any failure to pay PAYE/NIC
Player registration embargo imposed on any club failing to pay PAYE/NIC
Uefa said it has “been in close contact throughout with the Scottish FA and the administrators of Rangers FC, in order to explain the club licensing and financial fair play rules and how they would apply in different possible scenarios”.
“Such a situation falls under the authority of the national governing bodies responsible for evaluating and deciding on any necessary measure(s) they estimate appropriate to avoid similar cases occurring in the future.
“Uefa is entirely confident that the Scottish FA will deal with this case in full compliance with the national club licensing regulations and in the spirit of Uefa’s club licensing and financial fair play regulations.”
Duff & Phelps says the announcement of the suggested new penalties has caused “a delay in the sale process”.
One of the three bidders has told BBC Scotland that his offer stands, despite proposed changes to sanctions for insolvent clubs.
Bill Ng, the man leading a consortium from the Far East, said the club’s survival was his priority
