Celtic’s January 2012 transfer window

916

Michael Lustig arrived early on a pre-contract from Rosenborg.  A right back as tall as the North Stand he is one of the most curious signings we’ve made in a while, considering the strength we have in that position.

Rabiu Ibrahim, past-wonder-kid of African football, came in after negotiating an end to an unproductive stay in Eindhoven.  I hear lots about Ibrahim’s ability but Celtic will have to find a way of turning that into a productive force in the SPL, something PSV were unable to do in the Netherlands.

Polish international striker, Pawel Brozek, arrived on load from Trabzonspor, where he spent most of last year at the side of the pitch.  Pawel is an experienced pro who is likely to enjoy his time in the SPL.  He’ll keep the front pairing of Abbot and Costello on their toes, neither of whom will be certain of retaining their place.

Young players, Paul Slane, James Keatings and Lewis Toshney went out on loan to MK Dons, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock respectively, which Josh Thompson continued his tour of English towns and cities by heading to Chesterfield for 6 months.  None were likely to make more than cameo appearances this season, all will benefit from the career development opportunity.

Throughout the month I ignored stories that we would sell our prime first-team assets, Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Forrest, Commons, Ki, McCourt and Matthews were all linked with clubs in England and offers were received for six of the above, but who in their right mind would sell top players in January when you are in a nip –and-tuck race for the title?

    Awe_Naw,

‘Campbell Ogllvie?? Now that would be very interesting given his current position’

Whether he was a beneficiary is neither here nor there. In all probability the executives who benefited did so correctly ie the scheme was run as it should be.

The question is was he on the board when players with side letters were being paid through EBTs.

If he was, then as a director he was responsible, whether he had actual knowledge or not, for wrongdoing.

He should be nowhere near the SFA and the fact he was appointed in the first place is a disgrace.

  3. I have this image in my mind.

When Paul Murray went scrabbling down the back of his sofa to fund a rival bid and Alistair Johnston signalled “No Surrender!”, it was the Govan equivalent of George Armstrong Custer looking around a hill in Dakota and saying “we can beat this mob!”

I would bet pound notes against pinches of ship that the members of the board, who understood how EBTs worked, did not need and were not issued side letters explaining how much they would get, that it would be ny way of “loans” but that these would not be repayable. A nod and a wink is fine twixt brothers discussing things behind closed doors. The same isn’t quite as reliable when discussing a contract with a player and his agent.

You would think that would be the case. However, you will be stunned at the utter stupidity of those who were running Rangers. Breathtaking stupidity.

We are so close to the result and I have kept things quiet until now, it would be stupid to take risks at this stage- so I will not say more. But do not assume that because “it would be stupid for them to…” that it did not happen.

It is now very apparent to me anyway since cardihun returned to the hun that Sir Skinty moonbeams exit strategy was placed upon us by all and sundry. The idea was to have a successful period for the hun and then to bow out having sold the club on to some other diddy that will take the flak in presiding over a serious downturn in hun fortunes. To the extent that they might go bust thereby enhancing even more Sir Skinty´s time at the helm of the hun and Scotland’s most successful businessman since Andrew Carnegie.

The vanity of it all is astonishing.

The level and intensity of cooperation from many bodies. Many of them public bodies….. bewildering.

I wonder how far indeed it will all unravel…… AND IT WILL INDEED UNRAVEL

AND DO YOU KNOW WHY I STATE THAT SO CONFIDENTLY ???

BECAUSE the submissive bodies carried out their dirty deeds believing that they were doing it for Rangers not for Sir David´s vanity and around 50m quid.

IMHO it has or will kill off the newspaper industry in Scotland. It doesn´t have far to go the newspaper industry but nobody especially hurting huns who have just seen their club obliterated will forgive them ever

I see the knock on effects from this exit strategy as being the final nail in the professional game in Scotland and the history books written by the son of huns will be brutally scathing towards Sir David Murray

We have much to thank Nacho Neds legal team for.

‘Scotland isn’t the huns. But the huns think they are Scotland. And they also think that those who aren’t of their mindset shouldn’t be part of Scotland.’

As with their anti Catholic employment policy the huns are just a bit slow at catching up with the mainstream.

At one time many institutions (the BBC, The Glasgow Herald) and employers wouldn’t employ Catholics. The huns were no different from anyone else, where they went wrong was continuing the policy longer than the rest.

So it is with their view of Scotland, and their position within it. In the 1920s and 30s, the mainstream view of Scottishness was more or less that of the current huns. Anti Irish, and Catholic, Calvinist. Scotland has moved on to an extent, and least in how these views are expressed. The huns remain where they were. They can do no other.

  10. having just read Phil Mac Ghiolla Bains latest blog the my next question is

if martin bain and david murray were paid through EBTs is it possible that rangers former manager was also paid through an EBT ?

  11. Surely a danger of the Proceeds of Crime legislation being used to divest some former Hun directors and chairman of any money they’ve got left?

  12. to quote Phl Mac “The full story of who had an EBT at Rangers is yet to come out” and i read yesterday that the Taxman has already interviewed a number of players concerning payments at rangers fc

There was a suggestion that McLeish’s remuneration package had something to do with movies.

This was another of Paul Baxendale Walkers schemes and involved tax breaks given to the movie industry. I think that’s why he got involved in making pornos (at least that’s his story).

I wonder if Sally was paid through an EBT?

Delahunt said that players had been giving evidence at the FTT tribunal, so this information must be out there somewhere.

Very interesting response, thanks for that.

I heard something else that was very interesting about GT’s knowledge of the tax strategy going back to day 1, when football clubs were trying it on as regards image rights and offshore companies receiving payments, Bergkamp at Arsenal from memory. I believe (and it is purely my belief, based on knowledge I personally have) GT have a level of complicity in this, and it is a bit rich to question going concern now – should have been done a few years ago.

Ernie, Yes it is the dominant culture but I would disagree that the reformation has created the Essence of Scottishness.

    (pedantic warning)

I believe the Essence of Scottishness is more diverse than adhering to a branch of the Protestant faith. Its so much more. Im not going to lecture you as I’ll admit I dont live in Scotland anymore and dont have to put up with what a lot of you guys have to endure but is it not the case that attitudes are changing? When Scotland has its independence it will have to be seen as a fair and open society. That is the only way to progress surely.

  17. Guys, I have business contacts in Edinburgh, a mixture of Hibs and Hearts fans, not really interested in the huns or us.

met them before Xmas and they advised me that

A few managers in EPL sweating on the outcome of the FTT

A few X mangers in England and Scotland sweating on the outcome of the FTT

A few EPL and Championship Clubs sweating on the outcome of the FTT

They also named the individuals, none with any links back to Celtic !!!!!!!!!

  18. as has been posted in recent days if the huns boycott the Laptop Loyal that rag could be in as much financial trouble as their beloved team……can we not have a knighthood for fergus mccann who did more to ensure the financial good of scottish football than minty moonbeams can ever dream of……….

  19. canamalar hail hail to yourself from the land of the rising sun best wishes also to DBBIA Old tim Lurcy Zybsek, Blantyre Tim, Summa of Sammi, Vmhan, Caddizy, Battered Bunnet, Bjmac, BRT, Gordon J, James forrest and SFTB….. three interviews in the coming weeks one of which is a second interview…fingers crossed and prayer mats please ….

  20. Interesting discussion on Scotland and its very soul. Gordon-J sums it up very well for me. What I would like to see is Salmond & his party facing in to the knuckledraggers rather than pandering to them, like MacKaskil, or “destroying” evidence of crimes against the country’s biggest minority. The anti-Catholic/Irish bigots coalesce round the Govan bankrupt lot. Why not exact the full measure of the law on them and force the SFA/SPL to do likewise? Scotland would be all the better for it and Salmond would have done a lot to convince me that an Independent Scotland would be a fit country to belong to.

In the current climate, why not exact punishment on Murray and the guy at HBOS who funded his arrogance by taking away any “honours” they may have received?

  21. awenaw sorry if i missed you from the list perhaps someone doctored my post :-)

big shout also for MWD みなさん がんばってください!

  22. The most interesting thing from Whyte’s comments are the he claims to have stopped the EBTs from the moment he came into the club.

So that begs the further questions:

How many current employees had them until you stopped them?

How many players under wonderful Walter’s time got EBTs to give them an unfair advantage over Celtic for their 3 in a row?

How many ex-employees had them after the Dick Advocaat time as that is the time they always quote this scheme’s use as starting?

It would be fascinating to know the answers.

  23. I enjoyed the recent analogy of Mr Stein’s part in the downfall of Rangers being compared to Ronald Regan’s role in the end of another evil empire namely the Soviet Union.

Mr Stein’s football success – 2 European cup finals with 1 victory hurt WATP so much that they, under Sir Minty, embarked on an unsustainable spending spree in an attempt to emulate the Lisbon Lions. Somewhat akin to the Soviet Union’s attempts to keep pace with the US in the arms race – it bankrupted them and finished the Soviet Union. Just as much as Hatered FC’s attempts to match our success has bankrupted them along with the rest of Scottish football.

Big Jocks shadow is something Der Hun will never escape from. Big Jock Knew – yes he knew Rangers would never be able to match our success – EVER.

  24. JinkyvJohnGreig-saysitall at 11:49

I don’t doubt you but proving how much they knew and whether they knew it was potentially illegal is the difficult part. If they can say they didn’t know about it, i.e it was never disclosed to them, or they can say they did know about it but received legal advice that it was ok (as I think that is Rangers excuse) then I think they might be covered from a liability point of view.

It is therefore seen as being inevitable that such Clubs [ and their European counterparts ] will say Arrivederchi UEFA —- Ciao a Euro League.
