Celtic’s January 2012 transfer window

916

Michael Lustig arrived early on a pre-contract from Rosenborg.  A right back as tall as the North Stand he is one of the most curious signings we’ve made in a while, considering the strength we have in that position.

Rabiu Ibrahim, past-wonder-kid of African football, came in after negotiating an end to an unproductive stay in Eindhoven.  I hear lots about Ibrahim’s ability but Celtic will have to find a way of turning that into a productive force in the SPL, something PSV were unable to do in the Netherlands.

Polish international striker, Pawel Brozek, arrived on load from Trabzonspor, where he spent most of last year at the side of the pitch.  Pawel is an experienced pro who is likely to enjoy his time in the SPL.  He’ll keep the front pairing of Abbot and Costello on their toes, neither of whom will be certain of retaining their place.

Young players, Paul Slane, James Keatings and Lewis Toshney went out on loan to MK Dons, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock respectively, which Josh Thompson continued his tour of English towns and cities by heading to Chesterfield for 6 months.  None were likely to make more than cameo appearances this season, all will benefit from the career development opportunity.

Throughout the month I ignored stories that we would sell our prime first-team assets, Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Forrest, Commons, Ki, McCourt and Matthews were all linked with clubs in England and offers were received for six of the above, but who in their right mind would sell top players in January when you are in a nip –and-tuck race for the title?

  5. When Whyte bought The Govan Tax Dodgers for £1 plus the Lloyds debt did he ask Sir Minty the following ? —-

Did any of the players get money upfront from an EBT ?

Did any agents get money upfront from an EBT ?

Did Minty tell Whyte the truth or did he mislead him ?

Whyte is a Pump a Dump man . Whyte is an Asset Stripper . I would be astounded of forehead if Whyte signed up to the deal knowing that he might be left with the tax liability..

Liquidation Beckons . No to Newco.

Talk is cheap. Murray, Whyte all claim to be loaded but where’s the walk to back it up.

I’m loaded but I don’t talk about it much. Actually I’m skint but it does cost anything to kid on now and again…. : – )

    You say:

‘Scotland IS the huns, the huns ARE Scotland!!!

Anyone who can’t/won’t see this is living in cloud cuckoo land! IMO!’

You keep saying this. I am wondering whether you have explored Scotland thoroughly.

Have you travelled around the country and spoken to people from the full spectrum of Scottish society?

I dont mean travelling with Celtic fans as part of an away support. Leave the football behind for a while.

Take your bike and cycle around the outer Hebrides with a pal. Take a trip to Mull and further to Iona. Explore the vast landscapes of the Highlands where a fair man will always be made welcome. Take a boat trip to the Shetland Isles or Orkney. Experience the culture there. Go Skiiing on the slopes of Aonach Mor or Glencoe and meet with folk in the mountain cafes. Take a break from our feud with those who wish us no good.

Scotland is so much more than ‘the huns’ as you put it. You just need to open up yourself to the possibility that there exists a better Scotland than the one you have sadly fallen out with.

    I hope you find it.

What is Grant Thornton’s liability in all of the shenanigans at R*ngers? Do they not need to sign off that the accounts show a true and fair view, and have they not done so for all the years of the EBT? If they are not signing off on the audit this year without questioning the Going Concern of Rangers based on the outcome of the big tax case, do they not have some liability around the fact that they missed the irregularities of the EBT and the second contracts that were in existence for the last decade.

The role of an auditor is akin to a watchdog rather than a bloodhound. The auditor cannot be liable for any wrongdoings which they had no reason to suspect were taking place. The most famous case of Auditors Liability was Kingston Cotton Mill Company and the judge in the case said:

“He is justified in believing tried servants of the company in whom confidence is placed by the company. He is entitled to assume that they are honest, and to rely upon their representations, provided he takes reasonable care. If there is anything calculated to excite suspicion he should probe it to the bottom; but in the absence of anything of that kind he is only bound to be reasonably cautious and careful.”

Was dodgy Sir Dave pulling the wool over Grant Thornton’s eyes for years, or were they too busy brown-nosing Minty Moonbeams trying to get all of his business after Arthur Andersen crashed that they didn’t want to upset the apple cart?

That is the million dollar question. The other thing is, if the auditors had any reason to suspect that something was amiss and didn’t declare it, they would be fully aware that they could be held liable and I’m sure they would have taken all precautions to ensure they were in the clear. They could have also signed a contract limiting their liability.

A shareholder if he holds 5% of the votes or can gather up other shareholders with a combined 5% could seek a special resolution asking for this information to be declared and asking the auditor to provide details of why the accounts haven’t yet been signed off.

They would also have to arrange a general meeting and Craig Whyte doesn’t seem to like meetings. The problem with this is, a special resolution requires 75% of the members to vote for it and with Craig Whyte owning 85%, its unlikely such a resolution will be passed.

The best rememedy for shareholders is to seek a claim siting unfair prejudice against the minority shareholders by the majority shareholder. This would have to be taken on behalf of the company and the best thing is, the company can pay the legal fees so this would cost Rangers even more.

Now if only I was a shareholder of Rangers.

The Rangers as a ‘brand’ is permanently damaged goods.

Any thinking Rangers fan recognises this.

My impression is that, privately, thinking, wealthy fans may like it when the team they grew up supporting is lording it up. But being like you or me, they are, however, capable of atavistic lapses, reverting to the childish ‘We arra peepil’ mode, like we witnessed at last year’s LC final.

But they know there is no business sense in investing in RFC … and that’s without the BTC hanging over it.

Good post and hard to argue with that…

We have to guard against becoming hate filled like the way others are, otherwise we become like them.

Those areas are sparsley populated and are peripheral, in every sense, to mainstream Scotland.

Fine for tourism, but little to do with the day to day reality of the vast majority of the population.

The fact is there is a dominant culture within Scottish society and it is rooted in the Reformation. That’s where the essence of Scottishness comes from. It may tolerate, to a greater or lesser extent, other strands, but it is nevertheless the dominant culture.

    Imagine there’s no Rangers

    It’s easy if you try.

No TV deals to help them

..They won’t get much from SKY

    Imagine all the people

    On their knees to pray

    Imagine there’s no Rangers

    It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

    And no religion too

    Imagine ‘We are the People’

    Never sung again

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope some day you will join us

    In a world where

    they’ll be no buns

    Classic post Mate well said..

I left over twenty years and being away that long has given me a very different perspective on the land where I was born.

Every second person I meet here in Swiss Land tells me how much they love Scotland and also Ireland…

Sure I struggle when I go back to Lanarkshire and see how deep rooted the hate is but to write off the whole of Scotland is just not possible, too many good hearted people and beautiful places to be.
