Celtic’s January 2012 transfer window

916

Michael Lustig arrived early on a pre-contract from Rosenborg.  A right back as tall as the North Stand he is one of the most curious signings we’ve made in a while, considering the strength we have in that position.

Rabiu Ibrahim, past-wonder-kid of African football, came in after negotiating an end to an unproductive stay in Eindhoven.  I hear lots about Ibrahim’s ability but Celtic will have to find a way of turning that into a productive force in the SPL, something PSV were unable to do in the Netherlands.

Polish international striker, Pawel Brozek, arrived on load from Trabzonspor, where he spent most of last year at the side of the pitch.  Pawel is an experienced pro who is likely to enjoy his time in the SPL.  He’ll keep the front pairing of Abbot and Costello on their toes, neither of whom will be certain of retaining their place.

Young players, Paul Slane, James Keatings and Lewis Toshney went out on loan to MK Dons, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock respectively, which Josh Thompson continued his tour of English towns and cities by heading to Chesterfield for 6 months.  None were likely to make more than cameo appearances this season, all will benefit from the career development opportunity.

Throughout the month I ignored stories that we would sell our prime first-team assets, Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Forrest, Commons, Ki, McCourt and Matthews were all linked with clubs in England and offers were received for six of the above, but who in their right mind would sell top players in January when you are in a nip –and-tuck race for the title?

  4. Ten Men Won The League on

    From the official site

SUNDERLAND’S Stadium of Light is hosting an old Bhoys’ reunion tonight when the home side play host to Norwich City.

Martin O’Neill will be hoping his new side’s run of good form can continue tonight against the Premier League new boys, managed by his former Celtic captain, Paul Lambert.

And casting his expert eye over proceedings will be Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, who is a studio guest with Sky Sports, who are screening the game live.

The Hoops boss formed a formidable partnership with Lambert at Celtic Park under the stewardship of Martin O’Neill, delivering a raft of trophies to the club. So he is perfectly placed to be able to give his assessment of both men, and of both teams.

Speaking to Celtic TV’s Huddle Online show, Neil Lennon said: ““I’ve been looking forward to it. Sky kindly invited me down and I just thought that this would be an interesting game.

“It’s a meeting of mentor and prodigy and I think there will be a real mutual respect there, up until the whistle goes. Both have done marvellously well. Paul has done a fantastic job at Norwich and Martin has just got the Midas touch going again at Sunderland.

“It will hopefully be a good game and interesting to see how both managers approach it.

“And I’ll be picking my words very carefully! We are all the same here, myself, Garry Parker, Alan and Johan have all played under Martin as has Paul, and we had a long spell under him as a player and learned so much from him.

“It’s brilliant that he can now see some of his players having a level of success and a lot of it is down to him and what we picked up from him in our playing days.”

Read the latest RTC blog and it explains beautifully why the MSM have turned on Whyte.

Ultimately, everyone knows that Rangers are going to die and there are two groups battling to win over support for their “new” Rangers.

Whyte and co vs King and co.

The MSM are now backing a new regime.

In doing so they are easily and predictably making the horrible hordes turn against Whyte at the behest of King and his cohorts. With public opinion against Whyte the only “new” Rangers that fans will support is King’s Rangers.

In return for this the MSM will get, amongst other things, an easy life dining on succulent lamb.

Like I say the RTC blog is well worth a read and explains it much better.

The Celtic Online community are always one step ahead.

  7. Lads TBH are you not a wee bit sceptical about this Whyte bashing all of a sudden from the media? it’s strange why all of a sudden AJ,Minty,Watty all make an appearance out of the blue and then the bad storys just keep coming.

There is speculation that the securitisation of the season tickets would require, oddly enough, some security. The sweetie wives among us reckon that would be the stadium itself. Ticketus and Octopus (don’t ask) appear to have people known to CW involved in running them. Jump to whatever conclusions you care to.

  14. Silver City – my own conclusion is that we were all pretty much absolutely spot on correct about Craig Whyte when he arrived.

I was astonished that he actually took control of the club. I still don’t believe he was ever really ‘in control’. Whatever his ‘masterplan’ it never seemed to have involved rescuing his beloved, aye right, rangers.

Among the rangers minded he is about to become the most reviled figure in Scottish History. To me he is an absolute hero. For all the wrong reasons.

I have read the term Schadenfraude bandied about over this. Nonsense. There is nothing shameful about this joy. The bigoted, backwater, redneck, white underclass, fascist sympathising club of choice is getting everything it deserves. Lets hope they get no less than that and possibly more just to make sure.

  16. Lizard King – I personally want this patient on the life support machine for as long as possible. Maximum pain, minimum dignity (with apologies if that analogy is too crude) – yes, a long slow and painful death that they have to watch coming over the hill for many many days is absolutely the best outcome from all of this.

We also owe them a spanking at the Bigot dome before they die.

That said, can you imagine the carnage at such a match? Them knowing that could be the last ever time they watch Old Rangers take on the hated (but handsome, classy and genuinely dignified) enemy on their own turf – christ, it will take balls to be at that game or risk stepping out of your own house on the day of it.

And oh God, the last time they visit Paradise before the descend in to hell……….

  17. derbyshirebhoy on

Apologies if the point has been made before but in relation to the conjecture re the Ticketus money and the possibility of their having some form of security in the event of the demise of Rangers I wonder if it is not as simple as their declared policy on their website viz

“The specially created businesses will help improve short term cash flows for other companies, through a qualifying trade. Should there be any credit risk to the funds this will be protected using Credit Default Insurance.”

  18. What is all this ‘demise of the Orcs’ stuff??

They are 1 point behind us in the title race, and going for 4 in a row. I am in my late 30s, and have never seen the Great Glasgow Celtic manage 4 in a row – the huns have it ‘in their hands’… win all their remaining games, and they are champions. They are a club with an incredible ability to grind out wins, even in seasons when their team has been poor (like the current season). They also have allies in the media, the SFA, and ‘the establishment’, and a huge public support in scotland (more fans than any other team by some way…. although globally i think we now have more than them).

In short – they are a monster, and we have certanly not killed them off yet. It only takes another missed penalty by Giorgious (‘he’s a big-game player…?’) Samaras at ibrox and we are being laughed at by those vermin all over again.

I have suffered through my teens, have watched them win titles against McNeil, Hay, Venglos, Burns, O’Neil and Strachan – all decent managers (as well as the other unmentionable numpties) – and then against Neil lennon. I know how dangerous they are – and how when their backs are against the wall they revert to type… physicality, hoofball, fouling and cheating… all of which is tolerated by scotland’s refs and linesmen (F Andrews anyone?? A Davis anyone??).

In short…. let’s keep the champagne on ice until we take our foot off their stinking lice-infested head for the final time eh? (although it seems like a few on here have started quaffing it already….)

    Thanks

But I am not sure they will reach the point of enlightenment and understanding to comprehend what is occurring. The ONLY reason for the DR stuff was to undermine Whyte – not to inform the public. Whyte makes it to FTT decision day then the DR, Murray acolytes and chums are in trouble – the extent of fraud revealed will be damning – even the SFA will not be able to ignore this. But the battle for hearts and minds will be fierce within their own. A casualty of that will remain truth, buried away in Celtic blogs where the permanently dignified are too superior to look.

RTC has laudable aims but I always (maliciously) hoped the dignified would never catch on – they have missed the chance to mobilise now.

And while you mention it, and we are on the topic- “Dignity” – it won’t go away – McLelland was quoted again in the DR this morning on the topic.

    “Dignity

    1. a formal, stately, or grave bearing: he entered with dignity

    2. the state or quality of being worthy of honour: the dignity of manual labour

    3. relative importance; rank: he is next in dignity to the mayor

    4. sense of self-importance (often in the phrases stand (or be ) on one’s dignity, beneath one’s dignity )

    5. high rank, esp in government or the church

    6. a person of high rank or such persons collectively

    They utterly lack self awareness.

  26. Celtic in the sun – thanks for the heads up on that. Simple isn’t it. There was absolutely no way the DR was turning on rangers without the concern for rangers being at the heart of the attack.

So we ain’t going to see any great change in the sympathies of the mainstream meedja any time soon. Just a different tactic until they get their way and then it’s back to bigging up their team as it endeavours to get their preferred Newco straight back in to the league.

    The variables are massive here.

Two clubs? Who gets the players? Who owns the stadium? What about Murray Park?

Is Whytey about to be hung out to dry so his assets can be seized and sold on at cut price to the King/ Murray Newco?

If two clubs do emerge will there be a split in the support? Will we see an FC Rangers of Glasgow and A Glasgow Rangers 2012 FC? Will we have a Continuity Rangers and a Real Rangers? Perhaps an ‘I can’t believe it’s not Rangers’?

    I vote for the split.

  27. Lizard King – ah, yes. Of course I am forgetting that not only might Mr Whyte have some pretty shady, erm, contacts and practices but it may well have been the Whyte Shyster who has handed certain documents to HMRC which damn those who went before him.

Jesus, they should take this plot and turn it in to some kind of Mediaeval Costume Drama! The power struggles, the intrigue, the betrayals. They would have to be pretty creative about the love interests though. Obviously moving away from the reality of the troglodyte tendencies and looks of the Orcs they might have to eye candy it up a bit and get real humans to play the parts.

You’re dead right. As someone said earlier today, If they go bust before the Tax Case verdict the media will find a way of laying the blame at the MBB’s door whereas if they go bust after the verdict then the MBB can say ‘we are bust due to the size of the tax bill. I was not at Rangers when the club defaulted on paying its tax. It must be the fault of Sir David Moonbeams. Game, Set and Match ….”
