Celtic 2-0 Dundee

726

Fabulous goals from Gary Hooper and Victory Wanyama put Celtic back on winning ways, their first victory in four games in September but Dundee held out until minutes before the break, aided by an excellent performance from Rab Douglas.

Another ex-Celt, Gary Irvine, had a penalty claim 7 minutes in but the ref wasn’t convinced; Irvine’s tumble was a tad overdramatic.  Celtic were cut open on 15 minutes when Colin Nish found space inside the box but his shot was blocked.  The rebound broke to John Baird who should have converted but fired over the bar.

A minute later Lassad, making his home debut, dribbled to the edge of the six yard box when he appeared to be tripped but again referee, Beaton, denied the claim.

Kris Commons then stepped up the pressure.  His cross was dummied by Lassad but Gary Hooper’s shot was saved.  Commons then played a diagonal ball through to Lassad who shot wide.

Charlie Mulgrew brought a good save from Douglas from a free kick on the edge of the D after Wanyama was brought down.  The Dundee keeper then topped that effort with a save from Forrest after a good cutback from Lassad, before saving again from the same player a minute later.

Lassad’s movement eventually brought a reward when Beaton pointed to the penalty spot after the former Deportivo striker had his legs clipped.  Scott Brown has been reliable from the spot this year but this effort didn’t get anywhere near the post, allowing Rab Douglas another opportunity to show what he can do.

Brown made amends a minute before the break when his forward pass was collected by Gary Hooper.  Hooper still had a lot to do but nutmeged his marker before firing home, from an angle, into the far corner.

The advantage was almost doubled a minute into the second half when Gary Irvine tried to chest the ball back to Rab Douglas but found the post instead, however, Dundee were two behind three minutes later.

Victor Wanyama shot low and hard from 26 yards, clipping the inside of the post before crossing the line.

Lassad almost opened his scoring account for Celtic with a good header but Rab Douglas was a match to the attempt again.  Tony Watt used his impressive strength to get a cross to Gary Hooper, who steadied before shooting against the upright.

  1. CRC,

Think you’ll find the RTC Book (when it comes out) will be the absolute forensic dissection. Personally I can’t wait. In the meantime Phil’s ‘redtop’ effort will do nicely.

Top of the morning to you all from a beautiful Fife bathed in autumnal sunshine.

ItaliaBhoy in his critique of “Downfall” raises an interesting point about the difference between them and us thus:

“Phil believes Celtic fans are natural rebels, and suspicious of authority, whereas Rangers fans, coming from a priveleged position in the industrial working class, are naturally deferential.”

I think that he is spot on with this observation. For instance this morning while the Huns are salivating over Chuckie posing with fans for photos resplendent in Orange strip, in similar circumstances I would be raging and demanding to know how this clown had managed to get control of my club.

    Vive la différence

Do we rush our new players too much? Maybe they push themselves to hard to try and impress. As I recall Wanyama, Kayal, Izzy, Ledley and Hooper were all injured for periods shortly after their debuts.

  7. Scottish football may be reeling from the shockwave of the demise of RFCia but the real shockwave, a full-on tsunami is yet to hit.

We are all fairly certain that the EBT commission must find RFCia guilty, with the FTTT certain to do so too.

The full implications for this are not as trivial as stripping RFCia (& thereby Sevco) of titles but for the existence of the SFA itself.

Several officials, high ranking officials at the SFA not only knew about the EBT scheme at RFCia but fully participated in it – in full knowledge that it was not exactly legit.

The very fact that those staff are still in office further compromises the on-going existence of the SFA.

    he

When the EBT commmission publishes its findings, ALL officials at the SFA who have taken part in the EBT scheme and/or supported it, MUST resign immediately.

There MUST be a complete clean out of all compromised officials.

This could see the suspension of the SFA from FIFA. If these officials have any consideration for the game in Scotland, they should resign before the commission acts.

That won’t happen of course because they “don’t do walking away”.

A great deal of pain still awaits the game in Scotland, it will only recover if the corruption at the heart of the game in Scotland is wholly weeded out.

  8. The Battered Bunnet on

Very much looking forward to Paul’s leader today, which will of course feature an analysis of Victor Wanyama’s shot for the 2nd goal yesterday.

Perfect execution of one of the most difficult techniques in the game.

I’m starting to wonder what the limit is for Victor. 21 years old, and 6 years of natural improvement ahead of him. Frightening potential.

  9. My copy of Downfall arrived during the week, read the foreward and the Introduction.

I am taking this one slowly!!!

I happened to glance at the cover yesterday as I was doing something else and my mind wandered back to the early 90’s when it seemed their dominance would never end and we would be scraping about mid table for ever. I thought to myself – looking back at the pain of many defeats and rank rotten performances and looking on as they won all before them in Scotland (of course chuckling as their expensive teams were routinely humped in Europe) I could never ever have forseen these times.

    It is still somewhat surreal.

  10. ROW Z - Let Celtic Flourish by the Cleansing of the 'den! on

Tom English is only half right. What we need is an investigation that covers the roles of both the SFA and SPL, and their associated executive and non-executive officers, in relation to the roles of both organisations in reviewing and approving the various RFC returns that allowed them to proceed unfettered.

Unfortunately, only a new CEO or Board, untainted by previous involvement at any level, could possibly deliver such an investigation with any credibility.

Beg to differ old chap. While RTC of course provided detailed and professional financial and legal analysis as Rangers disintegrated, I found that his writing style was accessible and engaging. Quite a talented writer imo.

    Canamalar

Maybe. But it would be nice to think that people might move towards an acquired taste for more ‘dry’ investigative journalism on the basis that the current redtop variety is the equivalent of ladybird. That is not a criticism of Phil’s work or efforts in any way nor of his role in this expose.

More a reflection of what we might get from the idea of a determined dog like Phil partnering with a forensic surgeon like RTC. The impact of bringing both to bear as a partnership would be truly frightening for those being pursued.

I keep pondering on why RC Ogilvie remains in place (corruption aside). Perhaps der hun concluded in advance that they couldn’t stop this and that it would eventually come out badly for them. Perhaps RC is still in situ specifically to take the flak and resign, again trying to protect the grand architect of all this and his nightnighthood?

Or do I give them too much credit for intillect?

Yip, the scandal is not so much that one rogue club bent the Game, but that those responsible were simultaneously Office Bearers at SPL and SFA. They bent the Game from the inside.

Per earlier, it is reasonable to consider that one of the reasons these two bodies were so hasty in trying to tie Sevco to a deal on the topic was to ensure no carpets were lifted to reveal their own shabby role in the shameful story.

More recently, Alex Thomson has already quoted an SFL official as saying Whyte’s Rangers ought never have been awarded a license to compete last season, and that this was known at the time the license was issued.

With no one from the indicted club prepared to appear in front of Nimmo Smith, the likelihood of an extensive investigation into the administration of the Game during this period is greatly diminished. That said, I cannot foresee the President of the SFA refusing to appear if requested. Given that for a number fo years he ran Rangers’ administration, responsible at Board level for player registration and general complaince with football rules, his recollections ought to be of considerable interest. Not least because it is his signature on many of the players contracts lodged with SPL and SFA during the period in question.

    Dear Campbell was at once:

    Implementing Rangers’ unlawful remuneration system.

Failing to disclose full contractual obligations in registrations filed with SFA

Enjoying the benefits of the unlawful remuneration scheme himself

Responsible for protecting and fostering the Game as an Office Bearer of the SFA

We find that former Rangers Chairman John McClelland and Chief Executive Martin Bain are similarly caught in starkly conflicting positions given their Directorships of the SPL during the period.

I fear though that the detail needed to repair trust in the Game will never be fully revealed and clarified, and that is perhaps the greatest breach of faith of all.

Once any Board bashers read Downfall, they will realise the strategical contribution the Board made over the last 15 years to the creation of the zombies (LOL)…….. Over the period we spent more than we should have to ensure they didn’t get the financial success they desperately needed to survive. At strategic points we went into debt (which we have now, thankfully recovered from) to ‘deny’ them …MON & WGS …..

…As many posters on CQN have stated over the past 3 years, once the Football Establishment realised that the bhuns were heading for Zombie-Land, all the stops were pulled out to maximise their revenue, to avert the pending liquidation ….. There was nothing the Celtic Board, or any Board, could do about the honest mistakes etc ……. Whatever it took, and they even resorted to a successful witch-hunt on WGS, the bhuns were not being allowed to lose the SPL Money over that infamous 3 year period. …… We nearly prevented it, which was an achievement in itself, considering the ‘barriers’ …… It is a source of great joy for me that it didn’t work ……… Justice prevailed, and greengo will also be found out soon…. Can’t believe the media are AGAIN taking all greengo’s shoite in ……. As you will appreciate, I am not complaining ……..!!!!!

One thing I have noticed is that I am paying much more attention to the other SPL team results this season……quite enjoying that aspect……… Mon the Dons today……..

Jorge Jesus left Glasgow with a point gained, but also with a real understanding of what passion for football is. The Benfica coach said during the media conference in the build-up to his club’s league match this weekend with Académica that he had been amazed by the spirit of the Celtic fans and he compared them with Portuguese fans.

“Those are real fans,” the coach said. “The atmosphere we saw in Glasgow is something I’ll never forget. That’s real passion, and they don’t only show it when they are winning. I wish Portuguese fans would take a look because that really is something that’s worth copying.”

Yes and no and up to a point.

But being from a ‘privileged’ position within the industrial working class is more likely to make people rebellious than deferential. Think UCS. So that’s not it.

I suspect it’s more of a cultural/religious/Reformation thing where people regard themselves as a chosen elect. Their misguided view of their innate superiority has been strong enough to blind them to reality.

  23. Its not hard if you think about it, Green used a gun he got from oldco to rob a bank ,there for the blame lies with oldco. If green never had the gun he couldn’t rob the bank, so of course oldco are still to blame. Green is a chancer or not very clever or both. I think he’s very fly and calculated for what its worth.
