Celtic 2-1 Dundee United

820

Two early goals by Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama were enough to overcome Dundee United at Celtic Park today but a cracking strike by John Rankin early in the second half ensured the table toppers had to fight all the way.

Anthony Stokes had an early opportunity to test Pernis in the United goal with a free kick, as is often the case with Anthony’s free kicks, he struck the defensive wall.  United had the best chance of the opening exchanges after 7 minutes but Fraser Forster denied Garry Kenneth at his near post after a goalmouth scramble.  The visitors kept the pressure on for the next few minutes but were to concede soon thereafter.

Thomas Rogne cleared his lines with a defensive header which Stokes won with an aerial challenge and reacted first to prod the ball forward to an alert Gary Hooper.  Hooper made the most of the space available, opened his body and placed an immaculately measured shot inside the right post to put Celtic ahead.

Five minutes later Georgios Samaras earned hearty applause throughout the stadium for a robust challenge on Willo Flood before forcing Pernis to turn a shot behind.  The resulting corner was played short to Izaguirre who through a deep and high cross into the box.  Victor Wanyama was first to react and seemed to have jumped early but he somehow managed to hover a millisecond long enough to be level with the ball when he met it before propelling it high into the top left corner of the goal.

Shortly before half time Stokes had another opportunity from a free kick.  John Rankin broke early from the wall, raised his arm and blocked inside the penalty box.  Referee, Winter, penalised the player for breaking the wall and ordered a retake, not a penalty.  Stokes had two opportunities to make the points safe within a minute of the break.  He met a Mulgrew corner on the six yards line with a glancing header that went narrowly passed the far post.  Pernis then denied an excellent Stokes strike with a fine save.

The Celtic defence had not lost a goal in eight domestic games before today and could do little about the goal that put United back in the contest.  John Rankin struck from 26 yards, the ball clipped the inside of Fraser Forster’s right hand post and bounced in.  Shortly before the hour mark John Daly had Dundee United’s best chance of the game but Forster was equal to his header.

Georgios Samaras had Celtic’s best two chances of the second half.  The first a diving header from a Matthews cross which was saved by Pernis.  The second a cross from Matthews which Samaras pulled down with his chest before shooting over.

Played the what if game a few times!

If he wasn’t so arrogant he would have had a chance. When it kicked though, when it kicked…….

Off to bed with happy memories!

  2. Gordon I am a tim who wants our club to do everything in it’s power to be the best in the land

Right big fella here it is, I should probably post this sober and when everyone else is too!!!!

You see as a proud Celtic Supporter and Catholic I have made decisions that have drastically affected my life and those around me. When I graduated I had the opportunity to go to New Zealand, Australia, America, Suadi et al. I didn’t, I stayed.

    Why?

Well for me it’s simple, my people would have wanted me to continue their work. As a Celtic supporter and a Catholic I’ll stand and I’ll fight for what we are are and what we stand for.

please do it with a bit more love and compassion.

It was a good game and Celtic deserved their win. Credit to United, they came to play football.

I’m still at a loss as to who all these Tims are that have been hounded from this site, like I said earlier, can you not put a name to them and maybe enlighten us as to how they were chased from this site?

  6. Easy. Fergus McCann. His actions contributed directly to Celtic and the consequences on anyone else were of no concern to him. Celtic’s continued existence from 1994 is thanks initially to Fergus McCann’s intervention and his subsequent appeal to a galvanised Celtic support, many of whom still hold share certificates proudly on our walls.

Craig Whyte’s main concern is Rangers (or more likely, Craig Whyte). If his actions or inactions lead to the demise, survival, or glory of the Boche, then that is a matter for huns historians to record and lament. We will act, react, and continue, with or without them, and our actions and reactions will be the decisions of our current Board, hopefully aware and respectful of the wishes of the Celtic support (of course, we must make them aware of our wishes).

Whatever happens in our future history, I will give Craig Whyte, David Murray, Stewart Regan, Jim Farry, whoever, no credit. We define ourselves by our own choices and actions in whatever circumstance we find ourselves.

What was your other poster’s answer, and what is yours?

Celtic is much more than winning football games.

It is something you can’t describe.

When you get that you get Celtic.

  8. Gordon it is a bit hard sometimes for fans to remain calm

When they see pictures of Peter lawell , a nan who had personally profited during the Huns 3 in a row

As his targets were all net and his salary increased

  9. Good win today as someone stated earlier always a tricky fixture.

Has any other player improve as much as Wanyama over a few short months?

Now he has added goals – match winning goal at that.

OT – Well done to Paul Scholes on a dream comeback. Hopefully another United title on it’s way to the Busby Tims.

  10. Stringer,

if you;re still up…I met Barnes at our anual CSC do, he came across as quite humble and to some exstent overawed by the size and scope of the job, and also the size and scope of our support! His speech to us (as I recall; I was very very drunk at the time) was short but touched on how much more difficult he had founf the job than he had expected, hinting at but not explicitly claiming hun bias among referees) and asked for patience, that he hoped we had seen progress in the team and the style of football his team was playing, etc.

In return we presented him with a trophy that our CSC 5s team (including me, although I was hungover, crap, and actually got booked for puking at the side of the park while being subbed; hun ref no doubt) had won, in the hope he would get used to lifting trophies.

    That was on Thursday.

On Saturday we lost at home to Hertz.

The following midweek was the ICT game.

So to conclude – I was part of the team that gave John Barnes his only trophy as a manager.

    is interesting too

I’ve only been in Scotland for 19 years so still picking up the lingo. Does chanter refer only to her singing voice? Some have observed she has other qualities… Taking Mrs T to see them in Embra in March. The album is great, and the free download album on their website is also brilliant.

Had seen a lot of clips of them before I picked up the fact that yes they are married, but not to each other. Good actors as well as great singers.

that whole game was amazing, almost surreal. There were times under Barnes when we were utterly unplayable. Only against Aberdeen right enough. Have you ever played the what if game regarding Barnes? This is how it goes:

What if…Henrik hadn’t broken his leg in Lyon…?

(That’s another game I was at; the most depressing trip home ever, all the more so as we travelled by bus from Edinburgh – 26 hours! On the ferry we got the papers that confirmed his injury. Rarely felt lower in my life as a tim.)

I too tend to stay away from CQN when it is all about the Huns.

That is not a criticism. People are entitled to discuss whatever they like, and like any online forum, the users set the agenda. I just find it all very boring. Also, it’s mostly speculation and a lot of posters slaughter Celtic for not speaking out as a club. As I have said on here before, until Rangers go into administration/liquidation/receivership or whatever, Celtic are in no position to comment.

What if Celtic were to make noises about what should or should not happen in the event of Rangers going under, and then they win the tax case, or are given easy payment options, and there is no insolvency event? Ok, I know that is very unlikely, but the club cannot be seen to be pre-judging a situation at another club.

As for those who say they will stop supporting Celtic if a Rangers Newco is allowed to remain in the SPL, shut the door on your way out.

Careful how you phrase that. Many people have claimed that they will stop supporting Celtic (not renew their season book, not go to games, not buy strips etc) IF Celtic allow or are complicit in allowing the newHuns into the SPL – they are making a distinction between action and passivity/being outvoted.

Sorry Tom but I cannot let you last comment go. Rangers continuing in the SPL with no more than say a points deduction would be to abandon sporting integrity.

I have no problem with them being allowed to remain in being as long as a way is found to do it within what is right and just to all the other Scottish football teams who struggle to work within the rules.

Rangers got where they are by pockling the rules, that is what they do. They do so because there is no correction to their ways.

Celtic played by the rules and lost two titles in 2003 and 2005 because of the extra paying ability EBTS gave them to put better quality players on the park. There is a further argument that once the knew the taxman was after them a few years back, theyshould have downsized then and used their income to make provision for the tax bill, so even their last three titles have integrity questions against them.

I do not want them to disappear but I do want them to change their ways so that they and their business get no more talked about than any othe team we play.

Failure to stand up for the integrity of the game makes a fool of the game, but it will not make a fool of me. I’ll still want Celtic to do well but I see no future paying to watch us playing in a competition where our main opposition play by, and are allowed to play by, a different set of rules.

    Its called self respect.
