Celtic floored by lack of mobility

303

I don’t know if there is a good way to go out of Europe but that was certainly not one.  Copenhagen won their first match by more than a solitary goal since 3 November.  That they had a two-month winter break since then is not a mitigating factor.  We could not have hoped for a better opponent in the knock-out stage of a European competition.

Neil Lennon was correct to say individual errors was to blame; he was also correct in not throwing players under the bus, but this does not tell the whole story.  Copenhagen, tactically and individually, played the game of their season.  They knew what to do to leave Glasgow with a result and set about doing it.

Celtic were the better team until Copenhagen took the lead, but that superiority never overwhelmed the visitors.  In particular, we were short in midfield, where Copenhagen had greater mobility.  Odsonne Edouard was a spectator for much of the game and he often found himself surrounded with three defenders when the ball came his way.

Christopher Jullien was very good, Mohamed Elyounoussi was a real danger until the tank ran dry.  The same affliction befell Tom Rogic, who looked dead on his feet long before the second Copenhagen goal.

While this was a poor performance and dreadful result, it does not compare to the Cluj defeat in August.  Going out of the Europa League at this stage, the last sixteen or quarterfinals makes little difference.  As I said a few days ago, this week’s biggest game in St Johnstone on Sunday.  That becomes our immediate focus.

If you would like any pointers on bars, eateries etc in Malaga please ask.

I have many friends from there.

Indeed good friends from here are over there ahora

Malaga, great town to hang about. Love the strip of fish restaurants/huts down at the beach, and the rooftop bars you wouldn’t know were there unless you went looking for them

  4. The celtic support deserve better than Peter lawwell and this board.

They are successful at bringing in money but are reluctant to spend. Over £40m in the bank is perverse.

  5. field of drams/do the huddle

The website states that the tickets for the match are now on sale and yet they do not appear to be available. A trip to the ticket office would be the best bet, if that is practical of course.

  6. time for elhamed playing right side in a back 3 with frimpong in front of him wide right with forrest on the bench.

  7. Sydney – a new CEO will report to DD. that is where the problem lies, we had enough on the park the other night to see off Copenhagen. How can you legislate for VAR, missed sitters and a defensive brain poop?

  8. Gene, on it

Despite some like myself becoming less of a Happy Clapper, I see that CQN remains the blog of ‘The Many Dillusioned’.

How many thought that the team would line up as it did? How many thought Rogic and Elynoussi would start being nowhere near match fit for SPL never mind EL.

The tie was already won for God’s sake! Don’t lose a goal and you are through. Broonie on from start! Jozo on left (was that because he is less shit with his left than Ajer?).

Tactics!! NFL can hardly recognise the word.

We get an equaliser, not long to go till 90 minutes is up.A 22 year old OD is prodding his head and telling teammates to ‘screw the bobbin’. Not us ‘Get inti them’ .Bloody hell ! Naivety at its worst.

We are winning games in the SPFL by having better players not tactics.

I will still be following the Glasgow Celtic till the Big Man comes calling but that doesn’t mean I don’t see any problems.

  13. I’m hoping to see a reaction tomorrow. A bounce back

But make no mistake, there are holes in this Celtic team / squad.

Europa last 32 representing some sort of ceiling.

Scott Brown succession plan, we should be somewhat further down the road with this.

On a side note, surely he doesn’t play tomorrow. If he does, its mis-management.

As for the backline, I’ve been pleading most of the season, for Ajer to get his game together. Presently, not good enough.

Who’s pushing James Forrest, wide right ?

Is Jozo good enough? It’s debatable. But at least play him right sided, where he’s less likely to shat the bed.

  14. TBB,

i can picture her face , though her name escapes me for the moment

Never a truer sentence wrote. Lennon to his credit I think is a passionate leader, and thus good motivationally.

    But that’s it.

We can deny this all we want, but slippy and his ex Liverpool backroom team, are a switched on group.

Their early year domestic collapse, was possibly a result of inexperience / naivety. But they ain’t going away anywhere. If anything they will continue to improve.

We need to step up. Not just tomorrow, but with the next 12 months in mind. And beyond

How are we going to bounce back? We have just been eliminated.

    _____________________________________________________________________-

We are going to bounce back by winning 9 in a row this season and 10 in a row next season,

when we win the 10, we will have bragging rights over sevco for eternity :-)

  17. Tim Horton, I know I’m getting on a bit but I actually had forgotten that the Huns had dropped another 2 pts last week and that we are 12 ahead rather than 10.

Reading your post has triggered 2 emotions in my head, firstly worry that I’m going senile and secondly happiness that our cushion is that little bit bigger.

The happiness far outweighs the worry I can assure you.

  18. TIMHORTON on 29TH FEBRUARY 2020 3:08 PM

If we’d have got through we’d have shared the Scottish clubs’ share of the the total money for last 16 participation with them.

Total money was £11m, Scotland’s share about £1m. So they get all £1m instead of £500,000 if we’d progressed

That is out of order, it’s the sort of comment prolific on sevco media,

Neil may not be a master tactician, but he’s a far better manager than he gets credit for on here

thats exactly what he read, he must have taken it to mean they get the 11 as we are out…..thank you.

    senile’

wife and i both think we are going down that road.was i going up the stairs or coming down the stairs.

but we are not as bad as thousands out there, some poor souls.

  21. A very good post CCB certainly food for thought there.

I’m not arguing the point but with a few minutes left surely the players themselves should have had the common sense to see out ordinary time.

It was the first thing I thought about, 2 all & they win. See out the draw and it’s a new game and if it goes to penalties we have Forster.

We also had unused substitutes, but the attitude seemed to be we need to score again,

Maybe it’s because of the players mindset in playing in the SPL. In any SPL game if we were behind and got an equalizer with 10 minutes left everyone’s attitude would be tally ho let’s get the winner.

It all started to unravel with CalMac rushing to take a free kick, It was definitely the time to slow things down.
