Celtic interims report turnover up

571

Celtic published a decent set of interim results this afternoon for the 6 months to 31 December 2015 but chairman, Ian Bankier’s address gets down to business with, “One the park, it has been a frustrating season”.

The sale of Virgil van Dijk contributed to a £12.6m income for player trading, balanced by £6.1m spent on the acquisition of Jozo Simunovic, Scott Allan, Saidy Janko Ryan Christie and Nadir Ciftci. This brought pre-tax profit to £11.7m, with cash in the bank at £7.7m (up from £5.3m a year earlier).

Turnover was up by an inch to £31.4m as the club traded at an operating profit for the period of £1.564m (before player trading). The second half of the year is devoid of European football income, not that the Europa League is that much of a game changer.

I know financial stability isn’t an end in itself, but it’s important nonetheless.

It is widely recognised by most Celtic supporters that the club is struggling to compete at the top level against teams in Europe due to lack of access to certain revenue streams such as EPL TV money and declining attendances. This makes it more difficult to qualify for Champions League group stages which means we lose access to that revenue stream as well. Yet still I continually read on here complaints that we should be doing better in Europe but it would seem that some fans would like to hamstring the Board in the process by curtailing their attempts to maximise the revenue streams that are available. If a betting company are willing to pay Celtic millions of pounds per year for 5 years and exceed the current amount paid to us by Magners, I say bite their hand off. Magners have sponsored us for the last three years and yet I’ve never had a sip of the stuff. I doubt if I’ll ever place a bet with Databet either if they become sponsors.

Time to realise that Celtic is a football club that has to compete with other clubs for a finite amount of money in order to put the strongest possible team on the park to represent the aspirations of our supporters who, in the main, want the club to win every game when we take the field and every competition we enter. Some people set impossible standards for the Club and Board to live up to. Time to be less sniffy and altruistic about the source of the finance. Wake up and smell the coffee.

  10. Would rather anyone but Johansen starting. Happy with rest of the team.

    Stefan for motm now. :))

  11. Johansen again, though I hope he bags a couple of goals ,

thought Kris would at least have made the bench today.

    Mon the HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS

  12. Poor attacking line-up (Johansen behind Griffiths, Armstrong/Tierney), but we’re at home against a tired Ross County side. The last two results, disappointing as they were, could easily have been predicted. Anything other than a Celtic win today is unthinkable.

  13. Starting with one up front, I’ll say one thing for Ronnie…He’ll tamper everywhere on field bar the goalie and striker roles.

Oh well, here’s hoping…C’mon the hoops.

P’s. Happy with CG and LG.

  14. Well, I think we’ll win.

No two Celtic supporters agree on what our best 11 is so we might as well just get behind RD’s selection.

He picks his favourites just as we pick ours. Trouble is we have not earned the right to pick the starting 11 so we can go on calling it bizarre when other managers do not pick our selected favourites

    Off to game

  15. Mon the Hoops!!!

Take the betting sponsorship money and run. I read a while back they were based in the Philippines. More of the non-sponsorship jersey option from the superstore exercised in the future.

Agree and think we will win by three. Hope like myself that you are wrapped up for the North Pole. :)

My two Celtic shirts, the Hoops and Green pinstripe tops are both sponsorless. I drink Magners but refuse to advertise the fact. When I pulled on my Hoops for going to todays game, I did so to advertise Celtic.

    Hail Hail

Quite right – if we listened to all occupants of the moral high ground and the holy willies on here – we’d be as well turning Celtic Park into a giant food bank and play in the juniors at Barrowfield.

If we were a party to the riches of the EPL then I am sure we would have allsorts of charities on our jersey – we don’t and we can’t.

Some people ought to grow up and realise that we operate in a commercial environment – if they don’t like it stay at home.

95% of people who have a drink and have a bet, do so responsibily – surely we don’t make all our life and business decisions based on the small minority who cannot control themselves.
