Celtic only UK former winner in Champions League draw

360

Celtic are Britain’s only former winner in this afternoon’s Champions League group stage draw, joining four English clubs, attempting to secure the trophy for the first time. Both Spanish former winners, Barcelona and Real Madrid, are there, as are Portuguese winners, Benfica and Porto.

Like Britain, only one of Italy’s former champions – Juventus – are in this season’s tournament. Past champions from Germany, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund made it, while Netherlands’ Eindhoven complete the line-up of nine former European champions in this season’s group stage.

Best of luck to all former champions.

Enjoy the draw, and remember, game dates can be changed, so be careful if you’re booking flights.

Thanks for that. I shall ask Michael O’Leary to stay at his desk a little longer tonight till we get the final results of the draw!!! Anyhow, cheers and a nice wee trip to the sun for the overworked teachers in October would be nice, except our Irish colleagues only get the last weekend in October if memory serves me right. HH

Can one of you clever chaps post the actual rule that says the huns will get no money from our group stage qualification.

If you send me you address I’ll post you a Helix Shatterproof rule (30cm) that I have tipexed “Nae dough fur the deid” onto. That’s THE rule.

I wouldn’t be too offended mate. The cabbage is a noble, honest working-class veggie. And it’s green! Would’ve been much worse if he’d called you a shallot, endive or something more middle-class. With all the hoo-ha over the past few days you could’ve been labelled a Jerusalem Artichoke! Then the GB would’ve had the flegs oot…!

There’s this from the 14/15 season there’s nothing to suggest it goes to anybody other than the teams in the top league in the season we take part. Which would include TRFC.

However, they may be excluded if they don’t have a youth development system that meets requirements. Is that not one of the areas they were scaling back?

could there be another CQN couple in the offing?! :)

  14. I may be off the mark but, since the qualification to get into Europe was winning LAST year,s league, surely these payments should go to teams who were in that league and not in lower divisions. Hence nay money to the lot from Ibrox.

  15. I honestly don’t get this easy Group bit. First place no team are easy, second place is all teams would be taking points off each other.

If we were happy with 3rd place and a Europa spot, we would be better with two of the really big guns and say the likes of Brugge. Let the big guns take max points off Brugge, OK they may well take max points off us as well but I always feel we have a chance against anyone at Celtic Park. Worst case scenario it would be a straight shoot out for the Europa spot between us & Brugge.

My hope is that we have one opponent in the Group whom we can beat at home & draw with away.

Dan golfed the old course this week, and he is going to CP this week…. and this is Waheeda first ever holiday abroad …. so the two of them are over the moon already!!!!!

I think they ended up booking at the Grand Central, and they have heard our story of La Laterna, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pop in there!

Coia’s would be the best option IMHO; great food, better wine, a great East End welcome from Fredo and Tonia and then it’s a 20 minute walk down to Celtic Park soaking up the atmosphere. If they wanted to they could always stop off in the Crown Creighton for a swift pint on the way down!

It will all add to the atmosphere and ambience of the day!

If they do fancy it, let me know and I will get a table booked for them – it’s usually mobbed on match days. A restaurant full of Tims! Magic.

  17. Cheers Weeminger,

Possibly. I just think it strange these payments have been going for years and this is the first we’ve heard of the newly promoted team not getting it.

VFR …. that is very Celtic of you! (my highest compliment) Thanks.

I will pass that along, as it sounds great. There are a group that are travelling around (although only D&W are going to the game), but I will let you know if they can take you up on that.

    Cheers, pal!

  21. The last time we qualified for the CL I said, in here, that made Celtic the biggest sponsor of Scottish Football por cierto.

I think that may have come about because I’m sure I saw a reference to payments being made to ‘previous seasons’ league participants. However, I don’t think these payments are made until the end of the season, so at that point ‘previous season’ is the one just played ie this one (clear as mud).

  24. I just hope we get to find out what the Warbmeister thinks about the CL draw
