Celtic Park developments and what is needed next

443

I was at the Allianz Arena when we visited on Champions League duty this season.  There are many reasons to like the Munich stadium (although navigating back to the bus was not one of them), but stadium lights were like nothing I had ever seen.

Not only do they illuminate the Arena to a near-daylight level, they can instantly flash on and off, creating a spectacular pre-match lightshow.  Tools like this improve stadium atmosphere as well as providing a more striking event for TV viewers.  Celtic Park will be transformed when we install these lights this summer.

A new hybrid pitch (part grass, part plastic) will provide the very best surface available anywhere in the world.  It will be durable and bowling green-smooth.

Money will also be spent on the roof, which is the Achilles heel of the stadium.  The design is prone to leaks and makes it difficult for public address and wifi systems to effectively reach spectators.  A seven figure sum will be spent on the roof, but we need to realise a fundamental rethink is required.

As international tournaments reached Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and now Russia, closing roofs were installed at stadiums.  This increases attendance, game-experience, time inside the stadium and makes the game attractive to new attendees, who would never consider sitting in an exposed wind 147 steps in the air.

This technology has never been more affordable and is the norm from Kazakhstan to Cardiff.  It needs to come to Celtic Park.  I suspect those who sit in the South Stand do not have a full grasp on the match day experience of those in the upper sections of the rest of the stadium.

  1. Neil Francis Lennon resurrected a struggling Celtic team that was buried under a host of shite performances when Mowbray was in charge.

If memory serves. We went on good run when he was caretaker with the same group of players big Mogga had. The obvious highlight performance wise for me was the win against one of the best Barca teams ever to play the game.

We had a very good record in the transfer market when Lenny was in charge.Virgill,Forster and big Vic the standouts,Ki and Hooper amongst notable other buys during his tenure. He brought in vastly more £££s in transfer fees than he spent.

During his time here he’s been attacked on and off the park , sent a bomb in the post…the list goes on and on as everybody on here knows. He’s had to deal with an unprecedented amount of abuse imo. If there’s anyone we should cut some slack, surely it’s Neil Lennon.

Sure he gets a bit emotional at times but I don’t mind it. To me it illustrates the passion and fire in his belly for the game and the club he’s working for at the time. He cares.

If he ever came back, he would re enter paradise with more experience as a manager and I’m sure he’ll be the better for it.

When Brendan goes I would be more than happy to give Lenny another crack at it.

Hopefully the chance for his return doesn’t happen anytime soon as I’m kinda liking this Brendan fella :)))

He is a good quality manager who brings a great level of professionalism to our club . Get the impression the players love BR too which is good enough for me. The longer he stays here the better as far as I’m concerned.

Could you please make Peter Lawwell and/or other members of the board, aware of Jobo Baldie’s excellent post at 8.40am this morning. Jobo stated that he is only expressing a personal view, but I think he highlights issues that many Celtic Supporters feel, and speaks for all of us.

The Celtic support, is the most important component of the Trinity of Team, board and supporters. It is the club’s support that allow profitable branding of terms like “A club like no other”. Without supporters, there would be no income, and therefore no need for a board. Boards and players can be, and are replaced. If Celtic ever loses the support… well they’re irreplaceable.

Personally, I expect little to be done, about the misgovernance of the SFA in the past, particularly in relation to the old Rangers club. However I would implore the Celtic Board, to make our position of dissatisfaction with the inaction of this issue known, and very publicly.

It has often been said on here, and elsewhere, that Celtic are the victims, and on our own can do little to publicise the wrongdoing to a wider audience, or affect change. Maybe true, but moving forward I implore the Celtic Board to at least make our position clear, in an unambiguous and public way, and make us all as proud of our club as we should do.

  3. Hmm. Look ing at the “McGinn to Snake Mountain” story is interesting.

Firstly, I don’t think he would go; secondly, I think it would consume a large chunk of their transfer budget.

Thirdly, Hibs would look to inflate the price with offering him to English Championship clubs.

This is a perilous transfer target for them; if they do go for him and he turns them down then the AliStevie G myth is burst straight from the off; however if they do the more “cultural” followers of the Deid Club will be apoplectic at the prospect of a Catholic grandson of a Celtic Chairman playing for them!

The other strange story (apart from the stupid £3M price tag) is Windass to Cardiff. He isn’t a Neil Warnock type of player as far as I can see. This, IMHO, is the SMSM and Level 5 trying to generate interest to supplement that massive £6M warchest available for Walking Dead FC this summer.

In the meantime whilst all this transfer activity is going on, the man who has the final say and his number 2 are in Dubai talking up Liverpool. Strange.

Very good post as usual. I was fortunate enough to be in the Boardroom on Wednesday night and had fairly lengthy chats with Ian Bankier and Michael Nicholson; this isn’t the first time I have met them and on each occasion I have been impressed with their obvious affection and enthusiasm for the Club; their desire to improve it always comes across. That’s not to say that I always wholeheartedly agree with their approach, strategy or decision-making. From a personal perspective, I wouldn’t doubt their commitment to the Club and their effort to do what they think is right. Michael Nicholson was. a fan before he joined the Board and Ian banker is definitely one now. Peter Lawwell wasn’t there (doing something in Switzerland), but I have met him on a few occasions and he is a Celtic fan as well as the CEO. Again, I don’t always agree with him but I don’t doubt his intention is to better the Club.

These guys all have fiduciary obligations to run the Club to the best of their abilities which is often overlooked by the support who look at it from an emotional perspective. The Board cannot.

Having said all that, they still could probably do more regarding the SFA and Sevco; though I have always said I will wait till the end-game is reached before making final judgement. They may be vindicated.

I spent more time with Tony Hamilton who was in and out on numerous occasions to see how the food bank collection was doing – he was pretty wet by the time he had finished. He was heading to London yesterday morning on Foundation work which now takes place the length and breadth of the UK and not just in Scotland. This continues the legacy of Br Walfrid and those who started the Club.

All in all we are moving in the right direction; could we do better? Of course we could – in all areas of the business and footballing side.

However, what is obvious is that we are very successful as a football club and as a business and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. After all, our custodians could be the same as those who are attempting to run a 6 year old football club and business in the south side of Glasgow. Now that’s a board to criticise and question!

  15. The SFA have published the list of clubs granted a Licence in April 2018 and TRFC are a recipient.

This seems to contradict what Phil Mac Giollabhain published yesterday when Phil’s blog suggested SFA had reservations.

Now if those have been looked at by UEFA and dealt with then a licence has been granted and that is that ( although an explanation of how would be great for trust and transparency) but there was a similar situation a couple of years ago when the Greek FA had reservations about a licence they had granted to Giannina FC.

The Greek FA signalled that they were uncertain on the overdue tax situation as reported to them by Giannina.

This caused the CFCB to send in a team of auditors in early June who found that an overdue tax situation did indeed apply.

The thing was CFCB were notified early enough at end of May to investigate before fixtures etc established.

This is a similar situation if licence granted to TRFC with reservations.

The licence to Giannina was refused by UEFA after investigation and CAS upheld an appeal against UEFA by Giannina. This does not mean a licence will be refused to TRFC because the issue is not overdue payables but debt funding and compliance with the rules that allow it.

However it might mean UEFA setting conditions on breaking even henceforward. They did so with Olymiakos and just banned them for 3 years for not complying over the agreed timescale.

This could b a very smart move by SFA. It puts blame on UEFA for making TRFC live within its means which is good for the integrity of Scottish and for TRFC supporters who are presently supporting a House of Cards.

If Celtic only need to fail once getting into Europe at CL level, TRFC need to get access pretty quickly before their House of Cards collapses as it did in 2012 after they failed to qualify in both CL and EL in 2011.

  16. Jobo,

A heartfelt post re. renewing the ole SB. We all have our thoughts and reasons, most of which have been so eloquently, and tolerantly discussed on the blog over the past 24 hours or so (been a real pleasure to read back as a result). I’ve already renewed and for my own personal reasons, but the life long love of the club, instilled in me by my dad from an early age, plus the early understanding that Celtic and its fans are not universally accepted for what they are even in the country of their birth, makes me happy to give it a right GIRUY to them and I do this by renewing. At a very, very local level, I happen to live in a wee cul-de-sac where there is only two other Tim families. My neighbours are great neighbours, friendly, supportive, helpful, sociable until ……. you-know- when comes along, the dreaded ‘Old Firm’ games. One of the guys doesn’t even talk to me the day before and the few days after (for obvious reasons afterwards tee hee) so for what he represents in this society I LOVE going out to the games, the Saturdays, the weekdays, and especially the European nights. And to ensure I can do that I renew! But, of course whatever you decide will be the right decision for you.

    The Battered Bunnet

“Those who carried out the fraud, and those who enabled it, would like nothing more than for you, me and the Celtic support at large to walk away from the club”.

Excellent point and echoing what I was trying to say above. IF enough of us walked away that it hurt the Club’s ability to continue and to grow and to challenge, then our detractors would have won. The news yesterday about the advancements to the pitch and the lighting/sound systems show a Club with a plan and the finance in place to pay for the plan. Meanwhile we have success on the pitch with the likelihood of further improvement under a genuinely good manager. I’m happy to be part of that journey.

I can understand the GIRUY SFA reason for ST renewal but fail to understand why supporters then support the SFA by paying to watch Scottish Cup matches or even worse Scottish internationals. Surely this is the best way for supporters to make a stand without it hurting the club.

I agree that some sort of deal or promise must have been made regarding future seasons.

But those are promises from a GASL who has repeatedly stated that deficit funding is necessary for a number of years. There can be no doubt that the process has been manipulated to make the numbers stack up.

With regard to the Olympiakos case (and many other cases), a Settlement Agreement was published by UEFA. I wonder if we will see one for Sevco?

Nice post, clearly heartfelt. I’ve wrestled with the same issues but I’ve renewed. The time I get to spend with my son going to and from the games is too precious to me. In this busy life, those few hours in the car are irreplaceable. That time is more important to me in the long run than a one-man protest at the SFA.

The great frustration is that we don’t have a better means to protest and ideally, I’d like someone with a real voice to be fighting my corner. Someone like Celtic FC. So – conflicted, but renewed.

I agree about Scottish Cup games. But that is a personal decision.

I feel that CQN is too complex at times. The average supporter just wants to support his ( her ) team . They like the winning feeling , the camaraderie and the sheer enjoyment.

The politics are just to complicated and an unnecessary distraction for what they see as a straightforward footballing decision.

I enjoy this blog, in my opinion it is the best Celtic site by a country mile. But is it representative of the wider support. ? . No I don’t think it is.

Renewing your ST is a personal decision because it’s about the impact it would have on our club. Boycotting Scottish Cup matches should be something we should all agree on and could be organised by the various supporters groups that make up the Celtic family. If we are looking for a relatively pain-free way of sticking it to our enemies then this would be the best way to do it.
