Celtic Park developments and what is needed next

443

I was at the Allianz Arena when we visited on Champions League duty this season.  There are many reasons to like the Munich stadium (although navigating back to the bus was not one of them), but stadium lights were like nothing I had ever seen.

Not only do they illuminate the Arena to a near-daylight level, they can instantly flash on and off, creating a spectacular pre-match lightshow.  Tools like this improve stadium atmosphere as well as providing a more striking event for TV viewers.  Celtic Park will be transformed when we install these lights this summer.

A new hybrid pitch (part grass, part plastic) will provide the very best surface available anywhere in the world.  It will be durable and bowling green-smooth.

Money will also be spent on the roof, which is the Achilles heel of the stadium.  The design is prone to leaks and makes it difficult for public address and wifi systems to effectively reach spectators.  A seven figure sum will be spent on the roof, but we need to realise a fundamental rethink is required.

As international tournaments reached Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and now Russia, closing roofs were installed at stadiums.  This increases attendance, game-experience, time inside the stadium and makes the game attractive to new attendees, who would never consider sitting in an exposed wind 147 steps in the air.

This technology has never been more affordable and is the norm from Kazakhstan to Cardiff.  It needs to come to Celtic Park.  I suspect those who sit in the South Stand do not have a full grasp on the match day experience of those in the upper sections of the rest of the stadium.

Jobo, if I hadn’t renewed by 2 tickets earlier this week your post would have convinced me to do so. I know you weren’t encouraging others to do so or not. But I had all the same thoughts as you and squared them in much the same way.

    Great post.

WHEN the seven-in-a-row Celts arrive at Paradise on Sunday for trophy-presentation day, they will be led from the team bus at London Road and along the Celtic Way by two club legends.

Roy Aitken and Tom Boyd are now Club Ambassadors but they also captained the Celts to two of the most important league titles in the club’s history – both of which have been celebrated in anniversaries at the culmination of this season.

Roy Aitken led the team to the historic Centenary Year title triumph 30 years ago this month, while Tom Boyd skippered the Hoops to glory when the league just HAD to be won as Celtic stopped the 10 this week 20 years ago.

Both club legends will carry the SPFL trophy bedecked in green and white ribbons ahead of the champions and lead them along the Celtic Way to the stadium.

The champions along with Roy and Tom will arrive at the Celtic Way at 11am to parade the trophy ahead of the 12.30 kick-off.

  9. In respect of the outcome of the Compliance Officer investigation:

It will have to provide enough justification to Celtic to justify closure.

If it does then Celtic make it clear why they accept conclusions and reasons for closure.

If it doesn’t or limits itself to 2011 and ignores consequences on LNS AND if the other clubs do not want to pursue, then what I would expect from Celtic is a condemnation of the SFA and fellow clubs and a refusal to recognise the conclusions of the investigation AND the LNS Commission.

If those in governance refuse to do the right thing then the very least I would expect from Celtic is a statement that condemns them for it in a way that shames the rest of Scotland in the eyes of the wider football world.

That might enable those with renewal doubts accept Celtic were indeed more of a club with the courage to demonstrate it to the world.

It’s not as if they have not given those in governance ample opportunity to do the right thing.

You wouldn’t be telling them. You’d be asking them just like Celts for Change asked supporters to boycott the Kilmarnock home match in 1994. Look how that turned out….

The one thing Rangers in all their incarnations excel at is living by the written letter of the law.

If they can find an interpretation that suits them but rides roughshod over the underlying ethics the rules attempt to document, they will do so.

That is why I call them Pharisees and take a bit of satisfaction from the consequent woe that continues to betide them.
