Celtic player luxury not afforded to Maribor

678

While Ronny Deila rested 10 players ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League play-off decider, Maribor changed only four players for their 3-0 win over Zavrc, who were three points ahead of them on the Slovenian league.  Wednesday’s goalscorer, Bohar, was replaced midway through the second half, while Tavares came on for the last 10 minutes.

Whatever regrets Ronny has over yesterday’s defeat he’ll get over it when he sees a dressing-room full of players who have rested and trained appropriately all week.

  1. Wee message for all our posters who are partial to a round of golf as well as the Celtic …….. I hereby doff my cap to you ghuys ……. played my first round today with a crowd from my work and at the age of 53 I found it hard , hard work but instantly got why enthusiasts get so frustrated ….. but I’ll tell you what ….. what a wonderful day I had nonetheless ……. hoping to recover in time for tuesday (-: HH

  2. I’m in a strange place right now. Love seeing Celtic win. Hate seeing Celtic lose. No different from most of you…..

I understood and supported our business strategy. No domestic competition, qualify 5 times in a row for the CL, use the money to buy low, sell high, continually – if gradually – strengthening the team on and off the park.

However, it hasn’t worked. We are not getting better, and will be extremely lucky to get into this by ear’s CL.

Our coefficient isn’t getting any better, and we have slumped from having a sniff at Pot 2, to being a solid Pot 4 team.

    So, Tuesday……

We win, qualify for the CL, pick up a win, maybe a draw or two. Don’t use the cash to improve (much). Repeat the scenario next year.

Or, lose, enter the EL, win a few games….maybe even hope to qualify for the knock out stage. Bump up our coefficient.

I hope we win. I will be devastated if we lose. But in the cold light of day, the EL might give us something to build on.

    Thoughts….

    No way weeron.

CL is all that matters. Provided we invest (hmm), it is a catalyst for much growth in a sporting and financial sense.

    EL is loser talk.

    Good night.

I will drive to meet you anywhere before Tues. Thanks again C, and God bless A&D. :)

  6. Am i being cynical by thinking the conclusion of the signings of Wakaso and Scepovic will take place on Wednesday……pending our qualification into the group stage of the “Champions” League?

Am i being really cynical in saying that IF we do not qualify…..these deals will then hit snags?

  7. My friends in Celtic,

I think we are all aware of the certain limitations Kris Commons has in his game, especially in the CL.

However, where are our goals going to come from without him ?

How many goals did he score last season ?

Are we that blessed for attacking midfielders / strikers that we can leave the double player of the year out of the equation ?

Have we any other player who would get close to be named in UEFA list of Europe’s top 25 players 2013/14.

Are we not prematurely effecting his demise based on a handful of games so far. Surely there is still a part to play for brain over speed.

    HH.

  8. 7 days/nights left in the ole transfer window. And a European qualifier to boot. What’s not to like?

Every day from now till next weekend should be interesting

Monday – have we got rid of the ICT demons?

Tuesday – build up to a MASSIVE game

Wednesday – the fall out and the debate over who we want in the draw

    Thursday – now that we’re through, surely a striker….

Friday – Champions League draw day and maybe something a bit different – Real Madrid? Man City?

Saturday – planning how we finish 3rd or even 3nd in our group

Sunday – Dundee (away) – bring it on!

    Don’t agree with that.

As a supporter the CL nights have been up there as my greatest experiences as a Tim.

For the players and management they’ll benefit from pitting their wits against some of the best players and coaches in the world. That can only benefit them in the long run.

I agree with that, I really like Commons as a player and as a man. However, I think that Ronny called it right last Wednesday by leaving him on the bench and I expect he’ll start with the same team on Tuesday.

    weeron,

You sum it up pretty well, the main area I would disagree is that we should continue to aim for CL, Paul67 said last week that these qualifying games are the biggest of our season, I agree that they are but we constantly start our preparation for them about three weeks before they begin and every year we are getting closer to missing out and by right we should have been out on our erchie this year already. We need to start planning for these games a year ahead or at worst at the January window. If you were a stranger looking at our “strategy”, you would be entitled to ask if we actually have a strategy.

    Settle an argument guys.

Have Sevco got an indoor pitch at Murray pk?

    ————

    I believe they do.

There was disappointment among our coaching staff when we ended up with a small indoor area, as I recall.

  27. antipodean red…

Don’t get me wrong. We should ALWAYS aim to win every game.

My thought was, if we don’t qualify, and once the feeding frenzy on this blog is over, would we be in a place that could have long term benefits?

Totally agree with you regarding prep.

  28. Greenpinata

It is such a draw for players and without it…..well….i guess many are then just not interested in coming to play here.

I just hate all the dangling…….there’s work permit issues, visas, negotiations over transfer fees, etc.

  29. Marrakesh

They do for def but its not full size.My son was at Rangers for 8 months and used it regularly.

  30. Kris Commons has been our main creative force over the past couple of years and scored a load for us last year. He has his limitations – as all our players do. I’m pretty sure Ronny D recognises this and tries to select a team that suits each game. He tried at the weekend a just came up short – but at least he’s varying it a bit and that gives everyone a shot at the action. I’m sure he’ll use Kris as he sees fit. I’m happy with that. Neil’s teams were much more settled but that can also mean more predictable to the opposition. Without Kris scoring last season it was hard to see where the goals would have come from.

BTW – are there still posters with Deila Out as their strapline?

I haven’t been on much – though I did pop in the other day and was amused to find a Drama Queen Convention.
