Celtic shopping in narrow gap before profiles rise

377

Oliver Burke made all the headlines two years ago with a big money move from Nottingham Forrest to Leipzip but progress since has not gone to plan.  He has played 46 minutes of league football for West Brom in the Championship this season, so has lots to do to recover his early promise at Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers has James Forrest in the form of his life this season, while Scott Sinclair is back in the team and scoring goals, but Forrest clearly tired before the winter break and, apart from Sinclair, options on the left are limited.  Burke will fill the role hoped for Daniel Arzani, before his injury at Dundee.

Of more strategic interest is the potential signing of striker Vakoun Issouf Bayo, who plays for Slovakian club, Dunajska Streda.  The Ivorian, who will be 22-years-old later this week, has played 32 games since leaving Africa, where he managed just nine starts in Tunisia.  This is where Celtic now have to operate, in that narrow gap between when a player shows enough form to interest, but before his profile attracts the attention of others.

This has worked well for us before (van Dijk) but will inevitably have a high variance of success.

Although 18-year-old Timothy Weah has appeared in only six senior games, he will be more of a known quantity than Bayo.  Celtic have experience of the French youth teams, in particular, Weah’s club PSG, from where they acquired Odsonne Edouard.  Still, Weah and Bayo will both need plenty of support to settle.

If both deals go through we will have four strikers for the run in, a vast improvement on hoping Edouard can give us 20 minutes for key away games at Pittodrie and Ibrox.

This is all a bit early in the window for Celtic to be this busy.  Unsettlingly so.

Instead of suggesting `not`, why not suggest `who` ?

    Cheerio for now.

If we cannot get in the RB and at the very least a CD then we are preparing to fail.

    I agree.

The January window is only difficult due to our reactionary moves rather than a long term strategy for growth and success.

It won’t always work out as hoped but we should expect better than the recent poor ones.

A totally unbiased European expert said today that Weah is better than French eddy, a level above. He has seen both play

Suggests that he, at least, will.

Me. Il play RB. IM 46 but I’m faster than lustig and I know my job is to STOP crosses from the left wing.

No. I would like posters to understand the actions of those whom they hold accountable before attacking them so frequently.

Celtic is in a very good place right now and I feel strongly that that is not reflected on CQN.

I am no expert but there are better rightbacks in our SPL than our current one.

I am an average taxi driver not a qualified coach.

If you have lets say a good-average right back it could be quite difficult to get a better one.

However if your rightback is a totall liability and has been that way for a season or two it should be very easy to improve…….even domestic players like Stephan Odonnell and Shay logan are better than what we have but i would prefer a better quality one from england or europe….spend 5 million

No matter who wrote the match report if Beaton is held accountable and made to suffer the consequences of his inability to referee in accordance to laws of the game then others will give it pause for thought.

Can’t see all referee’s being willing to give up a lucrative gig no matter the sfa’s wishes.

Who cares? As long as it gets done and he improves the team it doesn’t matter one bit to me

The reports are that he’s going to Dubai to train with the team. A whole 7 days into the window

  11. Fan-a-tic @ 3:03

Agreed but the big problem lies with that small, first word in this part of your post ` IF Beaton is held accountable and made to suffer the consequences `

  12. SFTB- If you’re on the scheme you should get tickets, I’ve been on it since it started, never had any issues HH Your card will get updated, they don’t issue paper tickets

  13. we are not 7 days into window but over 5 months since last window shut.. wTF have we been doing since then when everyone knows we need a RB, 2 CH and 3 CF. Not loans of inexperienced players

Paul 67, I struggle with this propaganda “we will have 4 strikers for the run in”

We will have Edouard – who has show flashes of brilliance (when we beat the Huns 3-2, Aberdeen when he came on and changed the game 4-3) but he has been missing in action more than brilliant

Griffiths – currently off sick due to mental health issues – I wish him every success in his life – when will he return and when he does how productive will he be

Then we get into the 2 new boys (who we have not yet signed) who are limited in their achievements

So on paper – yes 4 strikers – in reality

    A hot and cold player

A one time superstar who we can only pry returns as good as he was

and 2 new kids who follow the project model buy cheap and if it works sell for profit

Basically we are gambling with this years league

Remember we are trying to win 3 in a row the Huns are trying to win one anytime in the next 3 years

It’s beginning to look a lot like August

  15. Just read John Beaton was the 4th official at earlier Celtic v Sevco match at Celtic Park who shouted

foul, foul, foul in Steven Gerrards ear, before ball eventually reached Ntcham who scored the winner

    Who would have thought it

    A mere coincidence

We’ve done the cup scheme for a while and our variety of cards have been upgraded for Scottish Cup and European games in the spring automatically.

As Brendan said to Peter, your card’s marked, pal.

No. I would like posters to understand the actions of those whom they hold accountable before attacking them so frequently.

I t is a blog and certainly some step over the line.

But when highly paid people make decisions at Celtic then surely they are not naive enough to think everyone should slavishly agree despite the clubs emotional pull on fans.

Celtic is in a very good place right now and I feel strongly that that is not reflected on CQN.

Celtic are in a good place just now but the fact the team has had clear weaknesses for a while now despite a large amount of money in the bank surely entitles people to vent frustrations at the board.

I suppose balance is what I am after.

There is plenty balance and differing posters on here it appears to be censorship you want.

We actually have 5 strikers for the run in.

Doesn’t matter how good you think they are or what issues surround them, they remain as strikers, as opposed to being goalies or midfielders, and there are 5 of them.

There are 5 on paper, on grass, on air or on concrete.

Not much of a struggle, really.

    Sack the board.

    Sack defs that can’t defend

Sack wingers that wing it in games.

Sack managers that play best mids in LB position.

    Sack coaches that canny coach

    Sack scouts that canny scout

Sack CEOs that prefer to play bank managers

Sack majority share holders that use the club as an ego trip

Ahh sack it all. We’re doomed I tell ye doomed.

  23. Personally, I think big Ralston is ideal cover at right back. Sure, he’s a bit raw, but to me ok.

I also don’t have a problem with switching a winger to full back, remember when we had Kipper Lynch. There are a few others who have also converted and been successful.

Can we not gat Paddy Roberts, and big Victor, and I’d settle for McKenna too.
