Celtic should appeal to Uefa to change processes, fudge doughnuts

879

I’m not convinced that any meeting of minds between Celtic and Legia Warsaw to allow the latter to take the place of the former in the Champions League play-off round would be recognised by Uefa.  Having researched as thoroughly as possible, I’ve found no precedent for such an arrangement to be invoked.

It would, therefore, probably be safe for Celtic to take the high moral ground and acquiesce with Legia, but that would be a cheap shot at being generous, Celtic have no intentions of becoming involved, whether they have the opportunity or not.

The utter distress Legia are enduring because of an administrative oversight will cause untold damage.  The club have to try everything possible, including an appeal which invokes Willie Maley and Jock Stein, but they must find a clear path through Uefa, which does not appear to exist.

What Celtic can do, is appeal to Uefa to have processes changed, just as we did in 1970 when we profited from the toss of a coin.  Instead of clubs having the responsibility of checking available players, they could be issued with the same list the Uefa observer had on Wednesday, making this mistake less likely.

Current processes allow a minor infraction to cause disproportionate harm to a football club, and the tournament itself. Celtic should not hesitate in saying so.

Registration partially tightens tonight on player eligibility for our Champions League play-off round against NK Maribor.  After today, clubs can only add one player to their squad for these games.

While it is important to get players in ahead of Maribor, I’m not convinced the arrivals will be able to have a transformational impact.  It will largely be those already at Lennoxtown who will exorcise the demons of Murrayfield.

For what it’s worth, Maribor think they are absolute certainties to progress.  Planning to analyse them in detail tomorrow; I’m not betting against them.

I was mystified as to how relegated Hearts managed to win away from home in their first game as a lower league club but now I’ve heard Ally McCoist blame the off-field input of Charles Green it all makes sense.  How could any footballer reasonably expect to put in a shift with a former director speaking to the media some time earlier?

Delighted to hear the Daily Record swooped in to asset this as the reason for Newco Rangers demise yesterday.  It’s the same deflection as went on during Murray/Whyte/Green years all over again.  Why do they do this to themselves?

Let’s hope Ally sticks to his guns are clings to that contract like a fudge doughnut.

Yesterday in the City of London a man stood and spoke the truth as he saw it about Rangers International Football Club.

He is a top investment analyst with a leading UK bank.

Moreover, he is the recognised AIM specialist within his organisation and it was this section of the London Stock Exchange that he was speaking to investors about.

This wasn’t a public event, it was by invitation only.

Those listening to him were senior players in the market and for them this man’s advice is gold dust.

The 45-minute presentation was about what’s hot and what’s not at the moment on the AIM.

About half an hour of his spiel was taken up with RIFC.

This man had advised his clients not to take part in the IPO in 2012.

He did advise them to buy in at 25p as he (correctly) thought that there would be a bounce after that and a quick profit could be made.

    Smart man, this guy.

One of the people in the carefully selected audience had bought in on his advice and asked what he thought she should do next.

He said she should get out before the interims are published as he believes the accounts will show that RIFC are on the brink of insolvency.

He went further than that when he stated, as an assertion, that in his opinion Rangers were “trading while insolvent as of the 20th February”.

This concurs with my own sources inside the club.

As for the future, he stated to the audience:

“I believe that the current board are seriously considering an insolvency event.”

He said that this was the only way for the company to get costs down quickly.

Moreover, he also stated his belief that after a quick controlled insolvency RIFC would propose a fresh share issue.

He stated to those holding RIFC shares that there continued “to be good demand from trusts” in the AIM listed company.

However, the main thrust of his advice on RIFC was for them to sell.

He stated that, in his opinion, the intervention of Dave King did not bode well for shareholders or the value of their stockholding.

He stated that the market had “responded well to the Laxey loan” and this was because of the reputation of the hedge fund in the City.

Essentially, if Laxey are involved in a company then they will make sure that it is put on a sustainable basis if it is at all saveable.

Laxey Partners usually make money from their investments.

Despite his misgivings about the future role of the South African entrepreneur, he thought Laxey would prevail and protect their investment in RIFC.

This City expert stated that, in his estimation, Dave King wanted to gain control of the stadium and ipso facto the franchise by acquiring Ibrox in a liquidation sale.

  4. People complain about us signing players from the EPL who can’t get a game for their club.

Does anyone really expect someone who is an automatic choice for an EPL club to give that up and jump at the chance to play for Celtic in the SPFL?

Uh –huh, I’ve posted a lot of that too, and yes, there are two transfer windows – always.

I believe that we should be offloading, rather than any ‘panic buying’ to head off the cyber lynch mob, because right now it’s the buying ( last window ) that’s gotten us further into the predicament, we’re in.

The change of manager and more importantly the reason why we changed the manager has been viewed, rightly or wrongly by some, as down to a lack of investment or the planning of, which would have been raised long before NFL quit.

I believe RD when he says he’ll sign players, we always do, maybe he should leave it at that. I fully anticipated, there would be no ‘big spend’ before midnight, because the window is still open.

  6. Just logged on an started reading back,

so much for giving a guy a chance,

  7. How long do you give a manager?

In Jock’s first six games as manager at at Celtic we lost 2 and drew 2. In the following month we won 3 and lost 3, two of them by scorelines of 6:2 and 5:1.

After a close season, he still lost 2 of his opening 3 fixtures before winning 9 of the next 10.

There is not a lot of evidence yet to say that RD and Celtic are an unworkable mix. The absence of evidence does not prove the opposite, though.

Can we show a wee bit of the patience we would expect for ourselves in starting a new job?

I have an even bigger problem with the strategy outwith the occasional failure.

The problems we’re having this window are no accident. It is written into the design. The strategy actually creates this appearance of chaos.

How does it do this? Easy.

Every summer is going to be a rebuilding job. Managers will continue to come and go because they know every time they build a good Celtic team the components of that team will be sold off. We might, over the next couple of years, build a number of good Celtic teams, and it might be a pleasure to watch them play … but I would stipulate that the strategy will never let those good Celtic teams become great Celtic teams, and everyone who sits in our manager’s office under the present board has to know that limitation exists.

We are never going to grow a side. We are never going to have a settled squad. Ronny will dismantle this team and build his own side, and that’s a must, it is a necessity, but his team will not be together for more than a year or two and that is wrong.

The strategy allows us no continuity. It means every summer, every transfer window, will be spent doing this, waiting to sell players and crossing our fingers that they can be replaced. I am long past sick of it.

I feel sorry for the Poles, but I do find Dariusz Mioduski’s rhetoric a bit cloying. It’s playing to the gallery, and if I was a Celtic officially feeling even one iota of sympathy then that would be sorely tested by the “Celtic’s noble credo” gubbins.

If Celtic were cynical they could easily make a very public statement of regret, pepper it up with some drivel about the longstanding friendship between the British and Polish nations, even hold up some “Sorry it’s not you Legia” banner before their next game. And just like with Mioduski’s lyricism, it would all be playing to the gallery.

To use Paul Campbell’s Usain Bolt analogy, if you raced Usain Bolt, if he absolutely romped past you, and if he tripped over his own laces just before the finish line, then you could beat him and hold up a shiny gold medal. Should you be criticised because Usain Bolt didn’t tie his shoelaces properly? No. And that’s Legia Warsaw – the club who didn’t bother to tie up their shoelaces.

  21. After Celtic signing players from Villa and Cardiff (since relegated) is it fair to say that foreign players are using the EPL as a stepping stone to the SPFL?

  22. If UEFA had to change their decision(which I doubt they will as the rules are perfectly clear),would they not have to do the full draw again as Celtic were seeded and Legia were not.

I feel this will have been talked through before any decision was made and this is only following due process they fielded a suspended player and the effect is forfeit of tie.

Make the league competitive by robbing the Celtic support of a decent standard of football and encourage the brain dead to blurt out cliches like we’ll end up like rangers, meanwhile we remain cash rich while the support walk away.
