Celtic should appeal to Uefa to change processes, fudge doughnuts

879

I’m not convinced that any meeting of minds between Celtic and Legia Warsaw to allow the latter to take the place of the former in the Champions League play-off round would be recognised by Uefa.  Having researched as thoroughly as possible, I’ve found no precedent for such an arrangement to be invoked.

It would, therefore, probably be safe for Celtic to take the high moral ground and acquiesce with Legia, but that would be a cheap shot at being generous, Celtic have no intentions of becoming involved, whether they have the opportunity or not.

The utter distress Legia are enduring because of an administrative oversight will cause untold damage.  The club have to try everything possible, including an appeal which invokes Willie Maley and Jock Stein, but they must find a clear path through Uefa, which does not appear to exist.

What Celtic can do, is appeal to Uefa to have processes changed, just as we did in 1970 when we profited from the toss of a coin.  Instead of clubs having the responsibility of checking available players, they could be issued with the same list the Uefa observer had on Wednesday, making this mistake less likely.

Current processes allow a minor infraction to cause disproportionate harm to a football club, and the tournament itself. Celtic should not hesitate in saying so.

Registration partially tightens tonight on player eligibility for our Champions League play-off round against NK Maribor.  After today, clubs can only add one player to their squad for these games.

While it is important to get players in ahead of Maribor, I’m not convinced the arrivals will be able to have a transformational impact.  It will largely be those already at Lennoxtown who will exorcise the demons of Murrayfield.

For what it’s worth, Maribor think they are absolute certainties to progress.  Planning to analyse them in detail tomorrow; I’m not betting against them.

I was mystified as to how relegated Hearts managed to win away from home in their first game as a lower league club but now I’ve heard Ally McCoist blame the off-field input of Charles Green it all makes sense.  How could any footballer reasonably expect to put in a shift with a former director speaking to the media some time earlier?

Delighted to hear the Daily Record swooped in to asset this as the reason for Newco Rangers demise yesterday.  It’s the same deflection as went on during Murray/Whyte/Green years all over again.  Why do they do this to themselves?

Let’s hope Ally sticks to his guns are clings to that contract like a fudge doughnut.

Its not the case that I think our whole budget has been spent. We should be a bit flush right now. But if you believe the accounts (and I do) we have spent all the cash in the past and probably will again.

I cannot “prove” that I can only predict that the future will be like the immediate past.

  2. Emdy want to talk about players we have?

Would love to see Henderson given a run at CM, Broonie at RM, Johansen at LM.

Would love to see Thumb given a run at CF, two from Forrest/McGregor/Tonev either side of him.

We have 2 very good RB’s & 1 decent youngster.

We have 1 very good attacking LB who’s no that good at defending.

We have 1 very good CB and 1 bombscare (IMO!)

We have a very good GK with fitness concerns & 1 no bad yin who can be a bombscare at times.

See how long this yin last…

    SettingFreethe Bears 20:32:-

Carl Muggleton played 12 games for Celtic.

Wayne Biggins played 9 games for Celtic.

Gary Holt and Justin Whittle played 0 games for Celtic.

They were signed by an awful manager on the pittance handed to him by an incompetent and skint board. They cost a total of £200,000 in transfer fees and probably pennies in wages.

The team that they very occasionally played in also had Tom Boyd, Paul McStay and John Collins, all of whom would walk into the current Celtic team any day of the week.

The four players you mentioned were not up to the job and quickly moved on.

Teemu Pukki has played more games than Celtic than Muggleton, Biggins, Holt and Whittle combined. Despite having scored less than 30 goals in his club football career – most of which were scored in Finland – Pukki was signed by Celtic for £2.4 million and will be on around £15,000 per week.

We may not yet be at rock bottom but we are making a habit of making unfathomable decisions in the transfer market which are reducing the quality of our team and draining cash out of the club – both in terms of wages spent on duds and revenue lost from cancelled season tickets as fans vote with their feet.

Don’t worry, I got the intent in what you said. I knew you were not agreeing :-)

” I do question where you get the idea that anyone who voices their dissent whether that is echoed by the majority, is not the voice of reason which is what you implied. As apparently only those arguing against the majority can be considered the voice of reason.”

I think it may be what you inferred and ,again, once you use the word, “apparently”, you are speaking about your view and not mine.

Of course, I believe (sic) my view is the correct one, otherwise I would not be expressing it. You believe yours is too. But neither of us becomes any more right by being in the majority or in the minority.

  11. The two league games are taking on a huge level of importance for me. I want to see improvement, the clicking into gear and good standard of football that will give me hope we can see off Maribor.

Two poor league openers heading into the Maribor tie with a loanee the only squad addition, will not auger well for our chances.

Read all the flannel he comes out with uses a lot of buzz words. Remembers me of AVB all talk.

Then we get to our first real challenge as manager and he picks a team that baffles everyone. 4-1 oops give him time.Second bite at the cherry need goals. One striker and tatcits well what tactics.

I posted yesterday about the likely future for Celtic and tried to question the theory that Celtic need to sell around £20m worth of players each summer in order to break even. I’ve obviously not posted an accompanying racist comment, made remarks about someone’s sanity or made inane references to a no mark journalist … In order to draw comment.

However, would anyone agree that with the squad as is and Champions League participation unlikely, we won’t be selling anyone next year for nearly as much and will turnover less. That being the case, if you believe that Ronny is the man and that he is not responsible for the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia would you accept that we would need to strengthen the side next year using cash at the bank?

We appear to have signed two loan players now who we have already agreed purchase fees for in the event that we want to activate those. Not a bad idea given that next years player recruitment then becomes crucial to getting access to Europe. However, that still leaves us with this apparent need to put about 4million pounds on the valuations of our best players in order to make the £20m income we seem to need.

Assumming VVD goes in this window then our next saleable players are James Forrest and Adam Matthews. That’s in terms of £value not value to the team. We need to hope that Matthews and Forrest stay fit and up their game to achieve the plus £6m targets we apparently need for them.

Interesting. I’ve had similar thoughts about Izzy on the other side, due to the fact he can’t defend. Would need a solid, sitting LB behind him. IMO opinion Matthews doesn’t have the quickness of feet to make the wee half a yard for a cross that Izzy has on the other side. Having said that, I rate AM higher overall. His engine and better defensive abilities (although still limited at times IMO) would make him a good shout for RM. I think this is SB’s best position though, but doubt he’d get a run there.

    A fair point.

One of the problems with recalling the past is accessing the suppressed and buried memories. I knew Whittle and Holt had not played. I am surprised to see how few were the occasions that Biggins and Muggleton were there.

My over-arching point still stands. Boyd & Collins or no, that team was poorer over the course of a season than any team of the past 15 years. The current team would have to do spectacularly badly in the league this year to match them

It appears we welcome / allow Keevins back in. To be fair to him he tried to dance his way all around why he’s being allowed to return but what message does this give our support?
