Celtic should appeal to Uefa to change processes, fudge doughnuts

879

I’m not convinced that any meeting of minds between Celtic and Legia Warsaw to allow the latter to take the place of the former in the Champions League play-off round would be recognised by Uefa.  Having researched as thoroughly as possible, I’ve found no precedent for such an arrangement to be invoked.

It would, therefore, probably be safe for Celtic to take the high moral ground and acquiesce with Legia, but that would be a cheap shot at being generous, Celtic have no intentions of becoming involved, whether they have the opportunity or not.

The utter distress Legia are enduring because of an administrative oversight will cause untold damage.  The club have to try everything possible, including an appeal which invokes Willie Maley and Jock Stein, but they must find a clear path through Uefa, which does not appear to exist.

What Celtic can do, is appeal to Uefa to have processes changed, just as we did in 1970 when we profited from the toss of a coin.  Instead of clubs having the responsibility of checking available players, they could be issued with the same list the Uefa observer had on Wednesday, making this mistake less likely.

Current processes allow a minor infraction to cause disproportionate harm to a football club, and the tournament itself. Celtic should not hesitate in saying so.

Registration partially tightens tonight on player eligibility for our Champions League play-off round against NK Maribor.  After today, clubs can only add one player to their squad for these games.

While it is important to get players in ahead of Maribor, I’m not convinced the arrivals will be able to have a transformational impact.  It will largely be those already at Lennoxtown who will exorcise the demons of Murrayfield.

For what it’s worth, Maribor think they are absolute certainties to progress.  Planning to analyse them in detail tomorrow; I’m not betting against them.

I was mystified as to how relegated Hearts managed to win away from home in their first game as a lower league club but now I’ve heard Ally McCoist blame the off-field input of Charles Green it all makes sense.  How could any footballer reasonably expect to put in a shift with a former director speaking to the media some time earlier?

Delighted to hear the Daily Record swooped in to asset this as the reason for Newco Rangers demise yesterday.  It’s the same deflection as went on during Murray/Whyte/Green years all over again.  Why do they do this to themselves?

Let’s hope Ally sticks to his guns are clings to that contract like a fudge doughnut.

    Timing!! :-)

I’m prepared to accept that we can’t afford huge sums in the transfer market (unless we’re selling of course!)

So if that’s the case why not go for a guy who has a proven goal scoring record, has attributes that we’re in need of and is within budget?!

It seems sensible to me :-)

No honestly just dont understand who we could sign.

I am all ears to hear what the alternative solutions might be from those who seem to think our board or management team could do better ?

Surely if folk are critical they mist have a solution in mind ?

Still waiting to hear from all the malcontents as to who we should have signed tonight who would actually come ?

Still waiting to hear a positive strategy or agenda from any of those who seem to have an anti manager, anti board, anti DD, anti PL, anti anything.

The easy thing to to moan and criticise and blame. The much harder thing is to propose any kind of effective solution.

    ……..

Those in charge at Celtic are paid bucket loads of cash to identify suitable targets and get them in.

People on here are quite entitled to ask questions of these people.

  6. Tommy Joad, glad to hear your Dad has gotten through the surgery.

Pass on my best wishes to him.

And to yourself, he will need you and all his family.

    Good luck.

  7. As always any Celtic player will receive my full support but completely underwhelmed with Tonev, as a priority we desperately need a box player who is able to provide much needed movement to give the wide players options. There is still time so lets do it Celtic.

Wednesday is a massive game for the manager and the players they will be under the severest of scrutiny, failure to show any signs of improvement particularly in tactical nous and attitude is not an option for them.

Fraser Forster wanted away and you know as well as I do that there would be no point in forcing an unhappy player to remain at Celtic when he obviously wants away. He said himself that Celtic tried everything to get him to stay but he felt it was time for a new challenge. Sometimes it really is true when Celtic say they really wanted to keep a player but they just would not stay.

Gary Hooper also went to Neil Lennon whilst they were on pre season tour in Germany and told him he wanted a transfer to enhance his chances of an England place, was Neil Lennon lying?

Victor Wanyama’s agent advised him to refuse a new improved contract as he was in negotiations with QPR, the deal never panned out and he spent a further year on lower wages than he needed to. Was that Celtic’s fault too?

Celtic make many mistakes in how they interact with fans, deal with the press and our other enemies to mention only a few but they are not the Devil incarnate in all things.

That will make me a board apologist or sheep in some peoples eyes but guess what I don’t care. When they are wrong I criticise and when they are right I support them.

    Thanks for an answer….

I guess he would have been an easy option.

It would not have been money which prevented us with him.

I can only assume neither Lenny or Ronnie felt he was better than Griffiths or whoever Ronnie has in mind ?

At least you have given a name Thanks

  14. HT

I know where you’re coming from pal, I personally think we should give Griffith a chance first. I think we need to bring in someone better than both of them and money spent on May would reduce our chances of that. His signing would also probably have ended the search for another striker altogether, leaving us with what we have plus May, which I don’t think would be enough. It was a cheap shot, I accept that, but I feel you seem distraught over the loss of a guy we could & should be aiming higher than.

    Burnley78:

Your argument about “who would have come who would have signed” is, as I am certain you know, complete cobblers. This is football. Money talks. We just lost our goalkeeper to Southampton. QPR can compete with clubs from La Liga for players cause they will pay exorbitant salaries. The striker from AZ would have signed, if we were willing to meet his wages and pay the transfer fee.

The posts from Follow Follow are laughed at because they are the bitter, angry, deluded ramblings of people out of touch with reality, bigoted individuals who can’t see other than through their prism of hate. Your attempt to blunt reasoned argument with that comparison is further cobblers.

It is those who accept mediocrity without question, the strategy without scrutinising it, the embarrassment of last season’s qualifiers where we went into each round weaker than the last – something that I am stunned to see we’ve managed to repeat this time around, and to a far worse outcome, with further humiliation only a week or so away maybe – as if this was how “big clubs” do their business, who must draw the real laughs.

Blind, subservience. Unquestioning adherence to the party line. Accepting anything the club does “because I love Celtic” … the board gets away with treating us like mugs only because so many of us act like just that.

Live with mediocrity all you want. Hell, that is your privilege if you’re willing to pay for it. I voted with my feet a long time ago because I will not fund days like today.

We go into the Maribor game weaker than we went into the Legia first leg. You know, the one where we lost 4-1.

That might sit well with you and others. Some of us want better.

But to be fair, I stopped expecting it a while ago.

So you really think anyone would want to come and play in this pathetic wee backwater where winning is not enough to satisfy most of the so called support.

Where there is no realistic competition and where TV audiences are limited and blinkered.

What agent in his right mind would encourage any protege to come to Celtic…

Never mind at the peak time in an imperfect market.

Our proposition was never too attractive these past 8 years or so but it is weaker year by year.

The strategy is now flawed. No effort to engage when the English championship was a possibility 10 years ago, and a successful strategy of the past 6 or 7 years has run it’s course.

The challenge is what to do now. The new coach will be part of that solution. If he is given the time and oxygen to deliver that. He will probably not by most at Celtic.

I read the other day in an article by some clever academic that ‘immediate gratification is what most expect from supporting big name clubs which are more used to winning than losing’. ‘People who support a club to substitute for other shortcomings in their lives cannot be expected to allow that club and it’s expensive employees any tolerence if they do not meet their expectations’.

It seems this rings true at Celtic these days ….

These folk are not supporters but consumers in my eyes.

My if was based on Legia winning their appeal.

I think they have a case.

I could have made that clearer at it would mean having to win qualification to the EL.

That is not to say I’m not concerned about RD. I thought playing that lad from Cardiff was a rod for RD’s own back decision.

  33. Jamesgang

I think it’s the absence of answers that bear scrutiny that is the problem.

One factor that would help greatly is an indicator from Celtic of the kind of player they would like to sign that they think would reduce the risk of not qualifying for the CL ( there are no guarantees in football), the cost of that player, the benefit if it works and the cost if it does not.

I was thinking that Sneddon would be such a risk reducing player and hoped we would sign him.

I also think the risk would be further reduced if we signed more than one of that quality, let’s limit it to three to allow for injuries and suspensions.

A wee cost benefit analysis of the impact of that kind of purchase would be quite enlightening if of course folk believed Celtic were providing the kind of figures they had used to try and attract that kind of player.

As it is, the absence of info only helps preserve default positions based on the absence of info. A vicious negative circle.

I do wish Celtic were more imaginative in addressing perceptions but there again they might be thinking What’s the point?

Those we do not need to convince are with us anyway and those who are not with us will not accept what we say so why waste the energy?
