Celtic, the Bank of England of investment opportunities

595

Celtic are an astonishing 1/200 to win the Premiership this season; 11 games into a 38 game competition. 1/200 isn’t betting odds, it’s a borrowing strategy. The bookies are borrowing money at 0.5% for six months, an annual rate of 1%. Try borrowing at better rates than that.

Investors get a 1% tax free savings rate, which is also competitive, although they don’t get access to their money for six months without significant penalty. If borrowing rates were higher, returns offered on Celtic would improve to attract more investors. The Scottish Premiership has jumped from being a sporting event to being an investment opportunity less volatile than gold or property.

The 10 point gap between Celtic and second placed Aberdeen is the same 10 points as between Aberdeen and bottom club Ross County. We are metaphorically in a different league than even our closest challengers.

Question is, how did Celtic become the Bank of England of football? It’s not just because they are financially responsible with appropriate oversights, this helps. More importantly, they have used their financial strength to fortify the competitive product on the park. Others have been in similar situations in previous decades without the oversight, which led to enormously entertaining failure.

It might look like Brendan Rodgers has achieved alchemy over a sleeping dinosaur, but he’s only part of the story, albeit an important part. Much of the groundwork was in place when he arrived. Nine of those who started the League Cup semi-final were at the club last season, they were just not nearly as effective.

Brendan’s building on rock solid foundations. That’s what you need to build generations of domination.

  2. Hunderbirds are Gone,

I have no problem with talking about some of the waves that still ripple from the initial tsunamai that found me knowing absolutely no one and nothing that had ever happened.

It was a slow process, almost like squeezing decades into a few years to get even here.

I tried to explain it, poorly in a reply to some appreciative comments from SFTB on another occasion as follows.

    SFTB

Thankyou for those kind and encouraging words.

It is almost 5 years since an event that left me staring at a jumble of memories, dreams, faces, voices, names and emotions, each with their own little square on the out of control Rubik Cube that lay at the core of whoever I was.

I managed to stop it spinning and then one click at a time I tried to solve the puzzle.

Writing or at least my version of the concept had always given me pleasure and equally the hope that others might crack a smile, shed a tear or at least empathise with anything that I might happen to say.

Now it is so much more than that. It is my therapy. It no longer comes easy, the words don’t flow, and no sooner do I get a paragraph down than someone spins the cube again and everything lies in a confusion on my screen or scribbling pad.

    So often I give up.

Your words have encouraged me to persevere. I will never be who I was before, not worse not better, just different (and a quarter of brain lighter). Perhaps I will try and explain one day exactly what happened, how the past became a dimly heard voice behind a frosted glass window.

Who knows it may even give others some hope or even just confirm my insanity.

For instance, if you listen closely you will hear another click of the cube….look at that….It’s Celtic 5 Man City 0.

    Back to to bleedin beginning.

    Thank you once again.

So as you see, there may not be a road back to where I came from, or even a path leading to where I was heading…but there is an equally precious if alternative journey to somewhere unknown from somewhere even more mysterious.

Once I accepted that, it has become so positive, so much fun and a thousand new memories to fuel a desire to see what lies around the next corner.

It’s the people around me who need the patience …especially when I can’t remember their names….although it does come in handy when I can’t remember to get my round in :)

    We’ll speak again I’m sure.

    Hail Hail

    Matt

However many have been turned away, disappointed to find that unless the attended the previous games against Motherwell, Alloa and ‘Rangers’, they were not eligible for a ticket for the final.

It’s unclear whether Clinton or Trump will suffer most from this failure to secure the ticket.

    Full name: Anthony Randolph Warner

    aka: Tony Warner

    Born: 11 May 1974

    Birthplace: Liverpool

    Signed: 13 Nov 1998 (loan)

    Left: 4 Jan 1999

    Position: Goalkeeper

Debut: St Johnstone 2-1 Celtic, League, 14 Nov 1998

    Internationals: Trinidad & Tobago

    International Caps: 1

BiogWarner, Tony – The Celtic Wiki

Liverpool-born keeper Tony Warner (with the broad scouce accent) played three games for the Bhoys while on loan at Parkhead in November 1998.

The Liverpool reserve keeper was signed on loan due to an injury crisis and he was a makeshift keeper. Believed to have a good future, the brief spell was a good way for him to gain some experience.

Despite playing just three games, he managed to incredibly play in one of the few positive matches of note during the 1990’s (excluding 1997-1998 season). He managed to win a place on his home debut in the 5-1 league victory over Rangers on November 21st. Granted he didn’t have much to do, but it was quite an experience and one to tell the grandchildren about.

In any case, he didn’t stay long and left not too long after in January.

Back down south, Warner never played a competitive game for Liverpool (and ironically was shunted in time by Brad Friedel who was a player Celtic had been close to getting). He was to sit on the Liverpool bench as a goalkeeping sub for a backside-numbing 120 times.

He was regarded as a generally dependable keeper and went on to play for Millwall (his longest spell for 5 years & around 200 games), Cardiff and Fulham and he even earned an international cap for Trinidad and Tobago in 2006.

He moved on to the books at Hull City having transferred from Fulham at the start of the 2008-09 season, but from then on he was a journeyman playing for around 18 clubs in total in his career. The moves were mostly loan spells playing a handful of games as a filler or just simply unable to convince anyone enough of his ability as a permanent goalkeeper after Millwall.

Some good moments for him but he didn’t reach the heights.

He actually has two FA Cup runners-up medals, but didn’t play in either final.

The 5-1 win is probably the highest profile match he ever participated in, but what a match to talk about.
