    Soldier brutally attacked in street

    A Barnsley soldier was attacked in the street, knocked unconscious and then repeatedly stamped and kicked in the face and head – just hours after getting home.

     

     

    

     

     

    Servicemen and women, civic leaders and members of the public gathered at the war memorial outside the town hall on Monday as Barnsley raised the flag to mark a week of special events.

    A Barnsley soldier was attacked in the street, knocked unconscious and then repeatedly stamped and kicked in the face and head – just hours after getting home.

     

     

     

     

     

    The savage, brutal and unprovoked attack on the 28-year-old in a terraced street in the town centre has left witnesses shaken and horrified.

     

     

     

     

     

    One has told the victim’s mother: “They were like a pack of dogs, all gathered around his unconscious body to kick and stamp on him.”

     

     

     

     

     

    The corporal, who has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq,  was left with concussion, a broken nose, black eyes and cuts and bruises all over his face, head and neck with some shoulder and pelvic injuries.

     

     

     

     

     

    Because he was jumped on from behind, he has no idea how many people assaulted him at around midnight on Saturday – or why.

     

     

     

     

     

    Ironically, earlier that day, members of the public had applauded soldiers who paraded outside the town hall as part of Armed Forces Day celebrations.

     

     

     

     

     

    The soldier, who has served 10 years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, had got back to Barnsley that day after a 30-hour journey home from the Falkland islands.

     

     

     

     

     

    After spending time with his family he met friends in town for a drink and got a taxi  home at around midnight. He was attacked outside the family home.

     

     

     

     

     

    Terrified neighbours who saw him unconscious and being punched and kicked in the middle of the road called 999- one said: “I was frightened for his life”.

     

     

     

     

     

    His distraught mum, who does not want to be named, said: “How can it be that in the morning Barnsley is honouring our forces and telling them we are proud of what they do and then hours later a soldier is treated in this way?”.

    TBJ, that bhoy is called Graham Lightbody, he grew up about 5 yards from me. He was a great wee player and you could never get the ball off him for obvious reasons. His young lad is also in on the act if you check him out on u tube. I think Graham has the world record for keepie uppie. Something like 17 million and twelve or thereabouts.

     

     

    I don’t remember him or his family being tims, I also don’t remember them being huns. They were excellent folk to have a kickabout with.

     

     

     

    my record at keepie uppie is seven, after that I got bored and blootered it through a windae.

    Tricoloured Ribbon, Was he not from Sandy Row. I thought Sandy Row was part of the Shankill however my knowledge of Belfast geography is suspect, so if you say he is not from the Shankill then I believe you.

    Darts could really only be classed as a sport if your target was in camo and moving rapidly through the bush. If you don’t break sweat its not a sport.

     

     

    Now, golf is in the same boat but I was sweating like a janitor in a girls school when I played today in TET country. So golf is definitely in whereas darts is oot.

    Sandy Row is marginally south of the city centre.The Shankill is in West Belfast parallel to the Falls and literally only a few minutes walk away.The two roads are very close to each other as they enter the city centre.

    Higgins,to quote my late and much-loved father,was both a cornerboy and a guttersnipe.There was no grace in the man.I remember being in the Donegal Celtic club early 80s when he was demanding people buy him a drink.He frequented McLean’s bookies on the Lisburn road just a couple of years ago.He was barred for being obnoxious to the manageress and staff.Used to walk in and take the Sporting Life paper home with him.He was living rent-free in a luxury apartment next door.As for being highly intelligent–I doubt that very much.He was at least a bigot.

    Cowiebhoy, I’m having a great time although its two defeats out of two as young acgr is quite simply a better golfer than his auld faithir (plus the wee bassa wont give me the shots I’m due on the sclaffbaw handicap deal).

     

     

    I’m playing with TET and his son in law next Saturday. We’re booked in for some Ballantines drams tournament at my gaff, so I’ll not be driving the buggy……………………hic!!

     

     

    Me and the bold TET will be modelling CQN golf attire for the event. Although where he got the CQN speedo’s I’ve no idea? I’ll be wearing my Aberdour shirt.
