    Utterly hopeless and embarrassing

Thus far we have beaten European opposition that Sevco could take and thereafter been embarrassed against the most mediocre of European mediocrity …in the process …losing three games , drawing one …scoring two goals and conceding eight

Scraped a win against StJ , humped a DU team who did everything but put the ball into their own net and lost to ICT

An appalling record …what I’ve gleaned is that we want to play a fast paced , pressing game

Unfortunately it looks like a load of runabout dafties who can’t keep a clean sheet and cannae score from open play

The tactics are dreadful , the performances dross ….

Deila is out of his depth and Collins is just not a good football manager

CFC are a shambles in all but the balance sheet …unfortunately that’s all that matters !!!!

    Why do I love celtic,

They told me it was ok to be irish in Scotland. … croppies don’t lie down.

Now no respect for our irish heritage as far as I am concerned. ..We have to accept that any celebration of where we are from is bigotry…I refuse to accept this…We were never bigots….jock, Kenny, Danny were my heroes growing up.

I believe that singing the rebel songs is bad manners. ..its like going to a party and pis sing off the host…but no worse than flower of Scotland. ..

    Burgh Bhoy 2240:-

That agent is Dudu Dahan. I keep banging on about it but he brokered the deals that brought Gershon, Kayal, Ambrose and Biton to Celtic. I`ll let others be the judge of the merits of those players – suffice to say I`m not impressed.

I’m not so upset at going out of the Champions League. My upset was vented after the Legia tie. We oughtn’t have been in this tournament, and now we’re not. I’m not crying about it.

I am though wholly concerned at both the utter averageness of most of our 1st team squad, and moreover, the judgement of our new manager.

Efe at right back was hopelessly bad in every aspect of the game, yet played the full 90 minutes. He could very well have been hooked after half an hour. It was a remarkable ‘performance’ from him.

Mulgrew as has been pointed out previously, isn’t equipped to play the sitting position in midfield against decent players. So don’t play him there against decent players.

Izzy needs a break. Send him off to the beach for 3 weeks and see if he comes back any fresher.

Virgil hasn’t learned the trade at centre half. Looks great but missing the discipline of the position.

    Johansen average. Kayal average.

If Jamesgang is looking in, don’t send the Berget poster please. Hopeless. Quite hopeless.

And Stokes. I can’t think of anything to say that won’t nark those who adore him, so I’ll say nothing.

Wee McGregor looks like he’s got something interesting. Gordon is a good goalkeeper. Matthews when fit and Lustig are decent. Commons has talent and limitations in equal measure.

Elsewhere, Forrest is a concern from a fitness perspective – great player when fit, but clearly fragile. I have hope he can still emerge fully. Brown is a big miss at the moment.

After that, it’s Griffiths who may never allow himself to flourish. Biton. Boerrigter. Pukki. Some prospects. And a handful of loans.

You can take any combination of these players and create a decent team provided there is a talented core. There’s not and the result is mediocre results from mediocre players. A very Ordinary result.

In between, the manager has delivered 3 abject performances against lowly ranked teams in the Champions League in just 4 matches. Tonight is a continuation of a pattern first printed in Warsaw some weeks ago. It wasn’t difficult for Maribor; it was straightforward. That’s the manager’s brief. So are the players he signs. Thank heavens so many signed lately are loans…

We need talent in the team. And a guy who knows what it looks like and who can use it to good effect.

No Champions League I can live with this season. No talent does my head in.

    CELTIC 0 MARIBOR 1

    (Aggregate: 1-2)

RONNY DEILA has made history as the only Celtic manager to take the club out of the Champions League twice in the same season.

No-one is ever going to beat that embarrassing record.

It can only be said the Norwegian rookie blew it big-style against the Slovenians of Maribor in front of his own fans at Parkhead.

He made a complete mess of the second chance after the 6-1 humbling against Legia Warsaw.

HIs game-plan was unfathomable and he allowed the visitors to dictate the flow of play for huge chunks of the contest.

The Celtic fans let him know what they thought of his dull, unimaginative tactics with a chorus of jeers and boos at the final whistle as the Maribor players cartwheeled around Parkhead in a mixture of joy and disbelief.

And the goal that sealed Celtic’s Champions League fate was straight out of a Comic Cuts.

A ball flashed over from the left wing with 15 minutes and was going out to play until Emilio Izaguirre inexplicably headed it back into the danger zone.

After a swift bout of ping pong, the ball fell to Marcos Tavares and he lifted an effort from the penalty spot tantalisingly over the outstretched arms of the blameless Craig Gordon.

Izaguirre had been an accident waiting to happen all night. The Honduran was dreadful from start to finish.

Celtic’s first-half performance bordered on the mystifying. At times it was impossible to work out which team was playing at home.

There was a lack of purpose, cohesion, aggression and invention.

Stefan Johansen looked as though he was doing his best to get a place in the Guinness Book of Records for misplaced passes.

The combination of Jo Inge Berget and Izaguirre down the left wing was beginning to look like the best comedy double-act since Laurel and Hardy.

It was dire stuff from Deila’s team and the fans were beginning to show their frustration long before the half-time whistle.

Maribor, for their part, set out their tactics perfectly and showed a lot more snap in their forward play.

Charlie Mulgrew was given the freedom of the pitch in Slovenia, but he got no respite on this occasion with players coming at him from all angles.

He didn’t like it one bit and was clearly rattled.

Celtic, though, could have been a goal ahead in only five minutes and that would surely have settled their nerves.

Berget got on the end of a Johansen cross and fired across goal from the left.

The keeper missed it and Markos Suler just managed to put it past his own post.

But, showing signs of what was to come, a minute later Efe Ambrose, under absolutely no pressure, heaved a hopeless high ball into the crowd behind the goal with Anthony Stokes standing in a good position.

At least, Deila had the good sense to play the Nigerian wide on the right and not in central defence where he is a bomb scare.

There was a half-hearted shout for a penalty in 12 minutes when Berget went down, but Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai was not impressed and waved play on.

Shortly afterwards, there was another chance with Izaguirre out on the left, but his hurried ball into the box was straight at the grateful goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic.

Gordon hadn’t touched the ball up to that point, but he was given a wake-up call in the 16th minute when the ever-dangerous Agim Ubriami slashed one past his left-hand post from outside the box.

There was another escape a minute later when Johansen yet again gifted possession to the Slovenians.

Ibriami fed a pass through to Tavares, but his close-range shot was blocked.

This was not what the fans were expecting or hoping to see in their first European tie at Parkhead this season.

Just before the half-hour mark Celtic lived dangerously when the ball broke to Tavares smack in front of goal after Gordon had done well to get down and push out a shot from the left.

Once again, Ambrose was a spectator and slow to realise there was danger threatening.

Berget was showing everyone why relegated Cardiff City refused to use him in their first team after February.

He could do little right and another mystery was that it took his Norwegian compatriot Deila until the 66th minute before he eventually withdrew him and put on Adam Matthews.

Kris Commons injected a bit of pace into the play when he came on for Beram Kayal at the interval.

There was an immediate response and Celtic took charge for 15 minutes and there was a lot more urgency as they surged forward.

It was their best spell in the game and they were right out of luck when young Callum McGregor smacked the crossbar from eight yards after some slick play from Stokes on the left.

But in the 66th minute it took a timely save from the sprawling Gordon to keep the Hoops in the tie after Ambrose allowed Dare Brsic to wander past him and hammer in a close-range shot.

The comeback keeper did brilliantly to block the shot at his near post.

Deila then sent on Derk Boerrigter for the struggling Mikeal Lustig in the 72nd minute.

The winger was known as the Flying Dutchman at Ajax, but he must now be harnessed to an invisible overweight horse for all the pace has has shown at Celtic.

Three minutes later the Hoops were heading for Champions League oblivion after some of the most awful defending you are likely to see from a professional side anywhere in the world.

What Izaguirre was thinking is anyone’s guess. As a defender, he’s a good left-winger.

And Maribor should have scored again when Ambrose virtually stepped aside to allow Jean-Phillipe Mendy to cut in from the right.

Gordon pulled off a gallant diving save to his right.

Ambrose then headed a free-kick inches past the post from eight yards when it looked easier to score.

And then Van Dijk took a ball down on his chest, and as Parkhead held its breath, shot far too close to the keeper who was delighted to hang onto it.

And that was that. Celtic got lost in a maze of mistakes and will not feature in Thursday’s glamour draw.

Ronny Deila forfeited three points at Inverness at the weekend to prepare for this game.

Anyone still think that was a good idea?

TEAM: Gordon; Ambrose, Lustig (sub: Boerrigter 72), Van Dijk, Izaguirre; McGregor, Kayal (sub: Commons 46), Mulgrew, Johansen, Berget (sub: Matthews 66); Stokes.

  18. An earlier poster described Lord Livingstone as scum. That is totally unacceptable.

Tonight I listened to a frantic, worried support from the off. Mulgrew, Anbrose, Stokes were being pilloried from the off. Support, it is anything but but in the area I was in.

  20. Maribor did not tire because they are better than us and fitter than us and they are able to play the game of football better than us. Because they have better, or at least, hungrier players than us. Players who would run and run and run their hearts out out in order to play champions league football.

They are players who are better coached than ours, players who move and pass and take up position better than our players. Players who are able to side step and fool our players – players who earn much less than the players we have, yet can play the game of association football better than our players.

Players who play in team who by today’s standards are ….we’ll…..less fashionable than us.

When we played Porto in the Europa league final a decade ago, I felt they were really a champions league team (at the time) and we were a little unfortunate to play them in the final.

    How times have changed.

I stood and watched sneddon, Whittaker (Brian) and mcgugan and Stuart slater, and the like.

I used to think they were really poor.

    Until tonight.

Does anyone think we have a good side?

  21. Wakaso definitely signing his agent was at Parkhead tonight the deal to be done either tonight or in the morning.

  22. The title of a previous article was “Maribor fatigue levels.” Really?

What happened to those who said “This is their third game in 6 days, and they have to travel across Europe. We are rested. They will wilt in the last 15 minutes.” Really?

In Warsaw, we couldn’t hold it at 2-1 in the last 7 minutes. Tonight, with 0-0 taking us through, it was us who wilted. Just don’t tell me that anything good came from the ICT decisions.

Anybody who thought Oliver Tebily was a bomb scare hasn’t seen Ambrose. No focus, no concentration, head like a thruppenny bit, sclaffed 2 goal opportunities, had a player waltz past him with 5 to go, who really should have scored. Absolutely dreadful football player.

Why he was preferred to Denayer is completely baffling.

I don’t want to start on the rest of the team. It would take a while, because the quality on show was just abysmal.

Oh how we laughed when Maribor eliminated Sevco. How they must be laughing tonight.

MON said welcome to the slow lane. Now European giants with ground capacities of 12,000 are wiping the floor with us. They were far better, all over the pitch.

How far must we sink? Until we are fighting it out with teams from the Faroes or Luxembourg? Lawwell and the Board have a lot to answer for. We were handed a golden second chance by blind luck, and absolutely blew it. If the Ghanaian, Bulgarian and Serb were deemed desirable acquisitions, why were they not brought on board to help us over the line to the Group stages? Now Sunday lunch time league games await. How ironic would it be to draw Legia in our group.

This performance and result was humiliating and I am just sick of it.

    Rant over.

Firstly, ronnie needs to get his pre-match speeches sorted; if that was a good plan it had far too many incorrect assumptions riddling it.

Full back protection on crosses was terrible. They forced our midfield and centre backs, meaning we couldnt play into our midfield where our play making is supposed to happen.

But most of all our mentality was weak, no confidence in our ability to short pass them out of it.

Several players will have to go.

  27. TBB – you know what needs to happen? Norwich have to be phoned. £7.5m plopped on the table and Hooper offered the £35k per week he wanted. In football it is quality, quality, quality.

As I have pointed out a number of times. the last time Celtic acquired ready made quality was nine years ago when Boruc and Nakamura were signed.

Since then it has been all downhill.

We had the usual moaners in the north stand but nothing like what you describe thankfully..

  32. While yes the tactics from tonight (and previous games this season) were at fault, my concern is the gradual erosion of a winning mentality from the players in the team. I think this stems from our ‘famed’ transfer policy of selling on players for £Xmillions to the Premiership each year. Think Ki, Wanyama, Hooper, Forster…

Gone are the days where we signed a player like Petrov, Hartson, Sutton, even Nakamura or Samaras etc where playing for Celtic was enough for them, where they gave their all to win every single game regardless of the opposition.

Now, I reckon everyone we sign gets told “oh, don’t worry, it’s an easy league, you’ll walk it and look great then we’ll sell you to a Prem team and double our money within 2 years”. That’s the only explanation I have for guys like Pukki and Boerrigter who seem to view playing for Celtic as merely a job rather than a privilege.

The end result is performances like this and Warsaw, where a casual attitude and lack of passion for the crest (as well as reduced quality of course) has seen us lose, at home, at Fortress Paradise. I’m worried that this mentality that has crept into the team is beyond the control of any manager, signs had begun to be seen under NL as well as the situation now with RD.

Having said that, Neil Lennon + Samaras would have seen us do enough to beat both Legia and Maribor I reckon. Troubling times…

I’m sitting here thinking this is an EL team not a CL one and if we do scrape through I’ll be watching CL games through my fingers.

    The ones that aren’t crossed.

At least I’ll see more of the EL games.

One thing worries me. Who in the scouting area though Boerrigter was worth signing?

Two now I think of it. Why does RD think he is worth a place.

Lenny said Sammy was the kind of player who could get him the sack but I could see why he was willing to persevere.

I have seen absolutely nothing in Boerrigter to merit keeping him.

The player evaluation set up needs examination ( if there is one).
