I agree with you in regards to the way WGS had us playing, indeed I was vocal on here expressing my displeasure. However circumstances are different now, in terms of the quality of player we have at the club. Strachan has made a Scotland team full of journeymen watchable the back four he’s working with is no better than ours, yet are difficult to beat at a much higher level than last nights opponents.

Lenny is also a good shout but if we’re looking at past managers then at this point in time WGS ticks a lot of boxes.

Signs of progress that were the benefit of an average £8M/year loss.

    =====

    Again, irrelevant in this context.

I’m not concerned about us being humiliated in the Champions League, I am concerned about us being humiliated by teams with a fraction of our budget.

A few of you are missing the point.

  3. We could get WGS and we wouldn’t need to compensate the SFa (or whatever they are called).

    That’s how it works, right?

  4. I haven’t watched any replays of the goals/incidents but I presume, judging by the lack of gnashing of teeth, that both goals were correctly chalked off.

I was unaware that Blackett was having a nightmare until I checked my twitter timeline at half time. It seems he was responsible for both goals. I actually thought he was off balance and did the best he could with his defensive clearance at the first. My major concern at the time was that his clearance seemed to take an age to drop to a player on our 18 yard box who controlled it, let it bounce and took a shot unchallenged. The reason he was unchallenged was that no Celtic player could be bothered going any closer than 3 yards from him.

As for their second goal, Rogic was caught wrong side of the guy who chipped it to the back post. Thereafter, the danger of defenders running back towards their own goal along with the attacker resulted in the attacker getting there ahead and poking it in. Maybe the defenders (presumably Blackett) should have done better. The fact that the goalscorer is 40 is meaningless nonsense.

Rogic was also culpable at the sending off having passed the ball to a Molde player allowing them to break and send the striker through on goal.

Then there was the resultant panicky/desperate/mowbrayesque substitution. When I saw the numbers on the board I thought that Ronny had something up his sleeve. Nope, we were just going to take off a centre half and move a central midfielder in there instead. Said central midfielder then gets sent off so may as well go for it , 2-1 down with 10 men? Nope, move right back to centre half and left midfielder to right back and carry on.

So what now? His record in European competition is fairly dreadful. Never seems to win a crunch game but domestically does the business. If you are a believer you will use examples such as Tierney, Bitton and Rogic as examples of him developing individual players. If not then there are plenty of examples over the past couple of seasons of him simply not being up to the job against even the most modest European opposition. Yet there’s still folk on here that in a group scenario expect a minimum of 7 home points from 9 based on the fact that we are at home and we are good at home! Fortress Parkhead is no more. Time to accept it. Or look for change to be made.

‘Unfair sporting advantage’ Watch out for this phrase being used as if the onus is on you to prove something. Like the Legia ineligible player last year there’s no need to prove anything. The rules were broken, they did wrong, there were consequences for that regardless if the player was on the park for 1 minute or 90.

Like Livingston not paying tax. Did they gain an advantage? Doesn’t matter. Did anyone check their results when they weren’t paying tax? Nope, because it didn’t matter. They broke the rules and were deservedly punished. If they were getting relegated whilst not paying tax then they would/should still be punished. It’s really simple.

I expect to be advised how successful Celtic and others were during the EBT years regardless of 1 club not paying their way. Who’s to say these players wouldn’t have played for rangers* anyway? Some were already there before they enrolled in the scheme. Martin O’Neill ‘not feeling better’ should titles be stripped is meaningless but expect more of this type of nonsense. It’s not about feelings. Sanctions for wrongdoing are required regardless of any positive or negative outcome.

I know what your saying about Molde’s budget. However, it’s clear that they are a good side. They got results against Fenerbache and Ajax.

We lost against the best team in the group last night.

  6. Here’s one thing that I think needs to change – the automatic hike in wages SPL players expect when coming here.

Let’s say hypothetically GMS was on £1k/week with D Utd. At the moment he probably automatically jumps to £3-4k/week just by being here. This for me is the totally wrong approach.

We should be saying come to us – you’ll get a basic that’s the same as you’re on now, you’ll get appearance fees for each game you play £500 for the League Cup (£1k for final), £1k for SPL and Scottish Cup (£1.5k for final), £1.5k for EL and £2k for CL. If you cross some kind of appearance threshhold the numbers go up but the principal stays the same.

If you want the money prove you’re worth it.

  7. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Yes, I think Janko picked up an injury in training?

He would have been my choice too if fit.

  8. traditionalist88 on

If we were losing money during the MON years why is that to be factored into the judgement of Deila?

I could see the point if we were giving Deila stick for losing in the Champions League to clubs with 2, 3 or 10 times our budget. Then I would agree Deila wasn’t operating on a level playing field vs the opposition he was losing to nor in comparison to MON.

BUT out ineptness is being exposed by small clubs with a fraction of our budget so I’m sorry… the fact MON had a lot more money is irrelevant.

Nearly everything that can go wrong in Europe has gone wrong, the players look confused and nervous and bereft of ideas.

This after a year and a half of the grand plan. Sorry but the evidence is there that is not working.

  9. My friends in Celtic,

Still absolutely gutted. I must admit I did not see that coming, although possibly I should have known better.

RWW’s post at 21.19 hrs last night said it all for me.

To reitterate Ronny must be ruthless, a lot of players should go before him.

If only our players put in as much effort of some of our fans in just attending the game then I would be happy. The fans who made the effort were absolutely correct in letting the players know their thoughts about players who did not.

Seemingly giving up or seemingly not giving 100 percent is not the Celtic way And can never be acceptable.

    HH.

  10. Have been over this before.

Bagging Ronny is the easy part.

Replacing him with anyone of stature is another.

Anyone with his reputation in mind would require three things, none of which he is likely to get at CP.

    1. A salary commensurate with his reputation and proven capabilities.

    2. A tablets in stone guarantee of substantial money to spend.

3 Absolute control of what players are signed.

In regard to last of the above, it was alleged on CQN last night, perhaps facetiously, that PL’s son had a finger in the Celtic signings pie.

” Our priority is Serie A and an automatic Champions League place .. The players have been instructed to relax and enjoy the experience of playing teams from other Leagues .. . . They can learn that not being stressed tends to mean that you play better ”

  12. Did not sleep well last night. Kept awake by the bad memories of one of the poorest displays in Europe that I have ever witnessed in my 65 plus years of following the Celtic.

The present situation reminds me of the days before the demise of the Kelly dynasty. The revolt among the fans led to their departure. However with the absentee landlord and his cronies on the Board constantly ignoring the fans, I cannot see change taking place unless someone was to come long who was more Celtic minded and in conjunction with the supporters brought about real change.

I would image by now the Board are getting their act together to dismiss any type of constructive criticism from the supporters at the AGM. Will time be given to discuss the real issues that are destroying our club? Will supporters be heard or will they continue to be regarded as a source of income?

Mistakes are being made daily on and off the field, yet no one appears to have any solutions for the future. We bring people to the club who are mediocre or are long time injury problems. We have a scouting staff who in three years have not been able to find us half decent centre backs or strickers. Yet these unknown persons continue to find us the same type of inferior player constantly.

Lastly, as for the “boo” boys, why don’t you support the team through thick or thin? Or, did you get a “free” entry last night from one of the hangers on? Perhaps you are only there for the “show” games. Do you really support our team?

I really, really, really, really, really, really hate the Europa League.

The sole highlight of the evening was ole BSR’s mhan bhag.

As for the performance, I’m a fully paid up member of the mustn’t grumbleCSC but there’ s only so much bemusement even I can take.

The ole tremblin’ mince was about 8.9 on the Richter scale.

But at least the mince was paid for, I suppose.

Boyata could have done much more to prevent the first goal if he hadn’t stood rooted to the spot ,giving the Molde player a free shot at goal. Dreadful defending.

Blackett let his opponent get a foot in to score the second when he should have got some kind of physical challenge/block in but it was as if he was invisible. Again, pitiful defending.

These guys don’t even have the mentality to play for Celtic, never mind the ability.

They finished 7th, 17 points off the pace in Norway.

I can’t speak for Ajax or Fenerbache but I’m sure our lack of game intelligence and general creativity gave them a real boost.

It all comes down to the manager I’m afraid. He is not strong enough and it is abundantly clear a number of the signings were not his choice.

I dread to think how long we will be lumbered with Cifcti. And GMS is nowhere near the standard of player we should be signing. Wait until you see how many more Scotland caps he gets. If he has one already he better make sure he doesn’t lose it, lets put it that way.

How long can it take for the penny to drop?

When other football teams fail to perform on a regular basis to the required and reasonably expected standard ,what do other teams do ?

    They change the coach.

Not the ball boys. Not the tea ladies. Not the accountants or the Board members.

    They change the coach.

    That`s what they do.

    Collateral damage? O.K.

    But first change the coach.

Put him out of his misery.

    And ours.

  17. traditionalist88 on 6th November 2015 11:37 am

See above. We need to break this notion that just being at Celtic entitles you to a wage of £x/week.

Even at their best, some of our players aren’t better than Molde’s so why should we be spending so much more than them on wages.

I found a forum post from 2011 that showed Molde’s top players were on £5k/week. Let’s say that’s risen a wee bit in the last 4 years to £6k/week. I’ve seen nothing from any of our top players vs there’s that suggests they should be on anything beyond £10k. Maybe £15k at a push.

  19. weeminger

I would doubt if any two players have the same contract at Celtic, contrast like the one you just for talking sake do exist, it’s what the player does after he signs it, let’s put it this way if your coming from DU to Celtic, your earnings are going up that’s a given, not to many play for the jersey now.

“I can’t speak for Ajax or Fenerbache but I’m sure our lack of game intelligence and general creativity gave them a real boost.”

I have no doubt that a Celtic team that was experienced and could manage a game would win this group. But we’re not.

Molde are simply the best coached team in the group. Their discipline is there for all to see.

I agree that a lot of that falls on Ronny’s lap. That being said, he does have a lot of inexperienced players to deal with.

This Euro campaign is a learning experience. Just like Lennon’s first season when we only managed to be Rennes.

  25. Sorry, that was for dbbia.

Too many posts from me now, bowing out.

    Happy Birthday Celtic.

  26. Paul67,

When Ronny Deila first arrived at Celtic, he spoke about playing an energetic pressing game high up the park. I remember thinking, this will work well in domestic games, but in Europe — where we face a better calibre of opposition — we could get hit on the counter attack.

Domestic football is our bread and butter, but european football in our benchmark. And we’re going backwards. I’ve been saying to myself, give Ronny some time. Paul67 has convinced me there’s no such thing as a guru manager, so I’m not saying there’s another man out there who will wave his magic wand and turn us around overnight. But Ronny has had more than one bad result.

Before last night’s game against Molde, Ronny said he hadn’t analysed the previous debacle out in Norway, he’d just thrown the dvd straight in the bin. I thought he was just kidding, just saying that for the media, and for a bit of psychology so we won’t dwell on the negatives. But last night we discovered that he genuinely didn’t study the previous Molde game. We were far too open when we should have kept things tight.

I can accept mistakes if we learn from them, but to repeat them again and again like this is woeful. I know the players didn’t perform either (with the exception of KT). But Ronny has to take the blame for our abject form in Europe.

True. But for some of us it was not hindsight but bitter experience.

All too often we have been disappointed but not really surprised.

  28. So the board going behind RD back and signing him for four years where wrong to do that? RD didn’t want him? That what your saying? Or I’v picked you up wrong?
