  1. Sftb I agree it’s not that easy to win a league. However you and others have contributed to what I would equal the dumbing down of Celtic. Instead of asking for higher standards you have have made continual excuses for sub standard performances. Carry on with your support for sub standard mediocrity in the name of being better Celtic supporters than the rest of us. HH

We are desperately in need of someone at the helm who has a love of our club and a desire to make us great again. Our current Tory custodians are satisfied with mediocrity and have no ambition in Europe. Their sole aims appears to be keep the good ship Celtic afloat until until the new rangers joins us. A disgraceful strategy. Time to chase the imposters.

    =============================================================

    Obvious,really.

    Tories to blame.

    Is Deila a Tory?

    Come on,pal.

  3. Read back and most things covered

I’m a ronny fan and think he had great ideas about how football should be played ..similar to Rodgers at lpool but we have to face reality that Ronny can’t cut it in Europe.

His formation and passing game etc may sound good but if you don’t have players capable of playing it then it’s going to fail.

Every bloody game our centre halfs are about 30metres apart .. Then wen team counter attacks there running sideways to try get into position ..comical at times. Aberdeen at weekend saw us opened up about 3 times in first half.

The formation is no good for supposed wide players … Have we seen any wide players (Armstrong, commons, Gms,Forrest ) have a good run of performances ??????????? They Simply don’t suit this formation.

I won’t call for RONNYS head though because that’s too easy for the real decision makers… Ronny can go but only if the man who appointed him is giving the boot aswel.

Another transfer window we messed about ..every bloody window. Blackett is a shocker.. Can’t believe he got contracts at old Trafford.

I’m not totally ruling boyota out yet , I think he could become a player after full season of playing.

We really need to sign least 1 no nonsense centre half who defends and that’s it.. When he had the ball he hoofs it or passes straight away to nearest free team mate. These 20/30yard runs with ball and trying to play like playmaker doesn’t work when your signing players from the market we are in.

We got lucky with Virgil then Jason (loan and wasn’t going to start) basic defending is what’s needed.

Kieran tierney was immense , made some mistakes, got caught couple times but he kept his head up, tried to beat a man..3 at times and went for the box to try and create something. Armstrong , Forrest and commons couldn’t do that between the 3 of them.

  4. Tonight we were an absolute shambles defensively and our midfield was non existent. We stayed in the game with a flukiish goal. It was painful to watch us being so outplayed by a decent Norwegian team. Unacceptable imo.

  5. Thumb(s) up.

There are some players that take to life at Celtic immediately. Then, there are players that don’t but knuckle down, work hard and show the manager that they’re deserving of a spot in the first XI. Also, there are then players that you wonder what the hell the manager was thinking when he signed them!

For those that do start well, let’s take the last 20 years or so, even those of us of a refined vintage can remember that far back.

Cast your mind back to April Fool’s Day,1996. After an absolutely shambolic, protracted transfer saga, for which we have Jim Farry to thank, Jorge Cadete was finally able to make his debut for the club. Coincidentally, given the game at the weekend, that was against Aberdeen at Celtic Park. He came off the bench to score the club’s fifth goal in a 5–0 win, becoming an instant darling of the fans. A great sight to see for all supporters that were at the game but perhaps better remembered by those fans listening in on Radio 5. The sheer loudness of the cheers following his sublime finish meant that the UK broadcaster were knocked off air in the middle of a live broadcast. Loudest fans in the world!

Chris Sutton also settled in not too badly. A goal away at Dundee United on his debut saw the O’Neill era get off to a great start with a 2-1 win. Four weeks later, he’d get the first and last goals in the 6-2 Demolition Derby game. His career at Celtic didn’t end the way it started but 63 goals in 130 games is a more than decent return, especially given that he played in midfield and defence on a reasonably regular basis to accommodate John Hartson.

Aiden McGeady, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Georgios Samaras, Barry Robson, and Kris Commons among others, all scored on their debuts for the club. Now clearly, scoring a goal on your debut isn’t a statistic that should be the yardstick for how successful a player will be at any club, never mind Celtic but no one could argue that the names mentioned above didn’t achieve a lot at the club.

Some players make debuts that they and us instantly want to forget. Henrik Larsson anyone? He turned out alright as I recall. The other side of that particular coin would be the likes of Rafael Scheidt, Du Wei or even Freddie Ljungberg. Okay, an hour away at Berwick Rangers for the latter probably wasn’t the best of games or the most auspicious of places to make your debut but he hardly went onto cover himself in glory in green and white.

What about those players that do knuckle down and do their best to prove they’re worthy of that jersey that they pull on every week? The perfect example perhaps is Leigh Griffiths.

There was plenty debate when the club signed him from Wolves in the January transfer window last year. He arrived at the club with similar baggage to a reclaim terminal at Heathrow, there is no doubt that the support was split on his signing.

The Thumb as he’s become known made his debut as a 16 year old for Livingston, coming on as a substitute in a defeat to Airdrie. He ended up scoring 26 goals in 53 games for the club and that form saw him win a trial at West Brom. It’s said that the departure of then manager, Tony Mowbray, saw him miss that opportunity. Perhaps just as well, would he now be called The Chin?

In 2009, he moved to Dundee for a bargain fee of £125k and scored 34 goals in 62 games, an even better ratio of goals to games than he’d enjoyed at Livingston. Surely it was worth a top flight Scottish club taking a punt on him? Not as it transpired and he headed south to join Wolves for a fee in the region of £150k. The figure of the fee alone shows you what many clubs think of the ability of Scottish players. In the 4 seasons that he was registered with the West Midlands club, he played 31 games and scored 13 goals. Still a better than average return when he didn’t play a game for them in 2 of his seasons there.

There seems little doubt that it was his form at Hibs that made Celtic sit up and take notice. Griffiths moved to Easter Road on loan in August of 2011. Griffiths courted plenty of controversy whilst in Edinburgh and was criticised by the then Hibs manager, Pat Fenlon for gesturing at supporters for the second time in a month following a Scottish Cup win at Cowdenbeath. The first gesture was made at *Rangers* fans so maybe we can let that slide? He also apparently nearly belted Fenlon during his time in Leith but then no Celtic players have ever had disagreements with the management team, right?

Hibs agreed another loan deal win July of the following year which was expected to run for another 6 months. Griffiths won the SPL Player of the Month award for August 2012 and his form saw him earn him a first Scotland cap in a friendly against Luxembourg.

In January 2013, Griffiths then went back to train with Wolves, although he was then criticised by his parent club, as well as Hibs for a racist comment made on Twitter. Wolves came out and said that he would go back to Hibs for the rest of the season and he went on to scored in every SPL match during February to win a second SPL player of the month award.

He was named Young Player of the Year by PFA Scotland and was included in the SPL Team of the Year alongside Adam Matthews, Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Victor Wanyama. In May, Griffiths he won the SFWA Footballer of the Year, something no Hibs player had won for over 40 years. Surely worth a punt by now?

Sure enough, he did end up at Celtic as previously mentioned scoring three weeks into his Hoops career with a goal against Hearts. Bet he hated that! His dislike for the Gorgie club was then shown via YouTube a year later with a song about Rudi Skacel following a few beers in an Edinburgh bar before the capital derby. Not the brightest thing to do and he was promptly fined 4 weeks wage by the club.

A loan move to Hibs was mooted during the early years of the Deila regime after he didn’t play much during the Norwegian’s early tenure. That said, first team action came in October and Leigh scored twice in a 6–0 win over Partick Thistle in the quarter-final of the League Cup. He maybe started to become a favourite with the fans when he scored against Sevco in the League Cup semi-final win.

Fast forward to today. He is without doubt the club’s number one striker. He’s played 300 career games and has scored 153 goals, nearly a goal every 2 games. 76 of those games have been played in the colours of Glasgow Celtic. His goals return is 43, even better than his earlier career. He is a man at the top of his game and if he continues in the same vein, can surely only go from strength to strength. He looks like he’ll score every time that he takes to the pitch and it’s great to see his delight every time that he hits the back of the net. I’ve seen odds of him a 5-1 tonight for first goalscorer, worth a pound or two? How far can he progress with the club?

To segue slightly, another young man who is battling to beat the odds is a 21 year old young man by the name of Martin Low. He’s a Dundee United fan and is undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of cancer which has been found in his neck. He is a good friend to the Celtic family, especially the Bishop Crosas CSC and is working hard to raise awareness and funds for this most horrible of diseases. Check out his fantastic efforts below, it’s pretty humbling. He’ll be a Celtic fan tonight as we take on Molde and deserves our support. I’ll not be the only fan who reads this and remembers what I was doing at 21 and it certainly wasn’t fighting cancer. HH Martin.

  7. Conservative Celt on

Reading through this blog, I think the general consensus is that Ronny Delia needs to go. Good luck to hi. Nice guy. But he has had his chances.

The guy who chose him, Mr Peter Lawwell, must tender his resignation. He has been instrumental in Celtic’s decline in stature as a club, with his do-nothing-appointments. Do not be fooled, Lennon was a fluke. It could have went either way, that’s why he had him on a probationary neophyte’s contract at the start. An insult to the club. Lennon came good and I’m glad, but it was not because Lawwell did a good job. He did a good job in spite of Lawwell.

We have a healthy balance sheet and a shell of a former proud club.

I’m still up- had some work to prepare for the morning.

See, this kind of accusation just washes off me. It was first attempted back in 2009 when WGS lost his first league title after 3 successful forays. As I never got any congratulations for being the kind of poster who had enabled WGS to win the first 3, I was not going to get too upset by someone who was as upset as I was but was just looking for a scapegoat to explain it all away.

You frame the problem as “Posters whose views I don’t like accept mediocrity.”

I frame it as “in a world of Bosman, bloated TV money and Big 5 leagues, has led to a sea-change in Celtic’s position in the football food chain. Like all similar football clubs (Ajax, Anderlecht, Legia etc;) we are being marginalised by market forces. I recognise it and I do not like it but I have heard precious few sensible suggestions as how we can do it differently”.

Certainly, the “Speculate to accumulate” advice is a safe alternative to offer. It is safe because there are no longer any clubs, in our market position, who are mad enough to try it out. We can, therefore, go on believing it would work because it has not failed yet (well not since Leeds, Rangers etc;) and therefore it has not been disproven.

Much as I could believe that a man could fly without recourse to an airplane, glider or hot air balloon, it is just that no-one has been brave enough to jump off a cliff to prove it.

Ajax are not going to speculate to accumulate

Anderlecht are not going to speculate to accumulate

And Celtic are not going to speculate to accumulate.

Your hypothesis will remain safe and you, as a proponent, will remain free of accusations from fellow supporters on CQN, that you caused the death of our club by making it come to pass, because it will not happen. It will not happen because no-one will try to make it happen.

And, for that, I remain grateful.

Now, I have to get to bed or I’ll be gibbering in the morning when I present the work I did tonight.

    HH to you too.

P.S.- I’ll donate £1000 to the charity of your choosing if you can find one post from me that ever proclaimed I was a better supporter than anyone. My money will remain safe.

Totally agree , Lenny did well and we were very lucky..plus we did manage to buy some very good players .

Ledley, Wilson, Matthews, wanayama,Ki,hooper, Forster all gone.

All bar maybe Matthews would walk into our current team.

Scarey when Few posters on here who I would consider good honest and reliable have indicated that their is players turning up at paradise which the manager hasn’t a clue about.

Balde and Blackett mentioned for example. That should never happen even if the player turns out to be the next maradonna.

  11. the glorious balance sheet on

Porto have an annual football budget of 35 million euros.

They work with 250 scouts worldwide.

This is all stated in their 2014 accounts.

Yes they don’t have our constraints re work permits but they also operate in a smaller league in the shadow of a powerful neighbour ie Spain.

They seem to get far more bang for their buck than we do. Possibly because they don’t tour the treatment rooms, development squads and cold storage units of the EPL to bring in dross on questionable loan deals.

  12. I haven’t watched the game yet, it is taped, I think I know how the story goes though, seen it often enough now with these Senior players.

I got in to see the last 15 minutes, very poor stuff. Kieran Tierney playing like a Veteran and a man that Really wants Celtic to win.

After last Season in Europe when Callum McGregor was carrying the Senior players.

These Senior players have lost domestic games consistently, Really important games that they should have won, Far too many times now.

Get Ronny out and extend KC and CM’s contracts.

I love Broonie and his Desire and Drive but IMO he is undermining the Manager by not getting a grip of the situation. KC, CM and Stokesy can’t adapt to this Norwegian style of play, they have chucked it, IMO.

Potent mix and we are seeing easy wins against SPL cannon fodder and getting let down badly in Europe by players, who are not as good as they think they are.

Ronny be Ruthless or you will be outie. I sensed a Ruthlessness in Ronny D early Doors, and a much needed Ruthlessness after missing out on so much Silverware.

Winning Everything Breeds confidence to go and do really well in Europe.

I remain unconvinced mate. There are many factors at play including how much backing he’s getting in the transfer market and the constant question of who is actually signing the players (I think the board have backed him to an extent and I’ve no idea about the second one but the rumours remain).

Regardless our European performances under Ronny have been extremely poor. I personally think we’re worse than we were last season.
