  1. Sutton saying we should not be happy with just a treble treble…guy is going down in my estimation

  2. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see Strikers score goals, one of ours in on the sick, the other one we sold to fund peter lawels bonus

I could have been in goals for Valencia tonight , that’s how little threat we offered . While much of the criticism has focused on poor defending , it was actually embarrassing how poor we were offensively

  4. A wee bit here from the Guardian on Spanish club strength (and this was written just before Madrid won the 2018 final:

““Atlético Madrid’s win against Marseille in the Europa League final means eight of the last nine major European finals have been won by Spanish teams – and Real Madrid could make that nine out of 10,” begins Claire Miller. “Has one country ever dominated European football like this before?”

The Premier League marketing department may have trademarked the phrase “best league in the world”, but not even they have the brass neck to claim it is the strongest. La Liga has dominated European competition throughout the 2000s, and especially in the last five years.

Since the 2012-13 season, when Bayern Munich and Chelsea won the Champions League and Europa League respectively, it has been almost all La Liga. Real Madrid have won three of the last four Champions Leagues, with Barcelona winning the other in 2015. Sevilla won three consecutive Europa Leagues from 2014, while Atlético beat Marseille last week. The only non-Spanish team to win a European trophy in that time is Manchester United, who put Ajax to sleep in last year’s Europa League final.

What’s the lowest a team has finished while winning the Champions League?

There have been some other periods of dominance in the 53 years of European competition. For this purpose we have included the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, as it was effectively the Uefa Cup by another name. But we’re not giving time of day to the Super Cup or Intertoto Cup, for obvious reasons.

If Real Madrid win on Saturday, it will be Spain’s fifth consecutive Champions League. It would be quite a feat given that, before that streak started in 2014, no country – never mind a team – had retained the title since Milan/Italy in 1990.”

  5. Hugely disappointing, especially after our recent form but as good as the opposition was, it doesn’t excuse us giving the ball away so easily and so often.

Anyway, were not a big fish in a small pond, rather a whale in a puddle.

It’s obvious the step up in opposition class on nights like this is challenging for our good players. They are good and would be much better if they had this quality of opposition week in week out like Valencia have domestically.

Saw a post about a moaning Scott MacDonald earlier. Give me Scott MacDonald over a Kris Commons any day. Scott cares, Commons is on a meal ticket.

No injuries for weekend. Silver cloud and all that.

  6. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

The onus is on Izzy for me. He can see it all in front on him. In the end he neither played the man offside nor tracked the run. He was the last Celtic defender to get back in the box and his man was in yards of free space.

    @ ? on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:26 PM

Izzy steps up after the ball has been played. I’ve seen less lag in football streams than in Izzy’s decision making for that goal.

Centre backs need to be aware but just as much as full backs do as well.

  8. Celtic supporters en masse got carried away after successive wins against cannon fodder opposition. Tonight was always going to be a huge step up in quality. I thought Valencia were a very competent outfit, Tactically very good, their pressing was top class and they forced us into error after error until we could no longer cope. Our defensive frailties were exposed, particularly at left back as Izzy endured a torrid evening. Brown was really poor in midfield, being particularly carless in possession. They bossed the midfield, were solid at the back and exposed our mistakes in defence. They were better team all round and they outclassed us.

The honest truth is that we failed the first real test since Ibrox. The opposition will get easier but question marks remain.

and 4th..just to be sure ;-))…where do we go from here…there’s a massive clash going on in everyone…heart based expectation v mind based realism…and those who expect that there’s a natural balance between the 2….underlying it all, our love of Celtic FC…or is it PLC…;-))

    ah jeez , well beat

better team won without doing much

can’t play a winger up front and get away with it in europe

izzie was out of his depth

it’s very frustrating to watch us only play out from the very back when teams decide to press us

probably found our level tonight and that of scottish football

gonna adjust my expectations to pre MON when EL after christmas was seen as amazing

we haven’t replaced dembele, hope he has a crap time at lyons

    @SYDNEYTIM on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:26 PM

    Preaching to the converted.

Someone mentioned that Sutton said that Valencia need European football to pay off debt. It just shows you the difference in approach. They are putting far more money into their team as a percentage of earnings than Celtic are.

We are sitting with around £50m in the bank; how many teams hold roughly 60% of their turnover as cash in the bank?

I don’t want Celtic to take the Valencia approach and have significant debt but there is a happy medium and, at present, our approach is not that happy medium.

  12. WHAT IS THE STARS on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:03 PM

Unforced errors in passing cost us in Europe regularly .Of course its easy to say “unforced”.The reality is against better quality opposition passes are more likely to be “read” and intercepted

    ——–

They applied huge pressure in key areas forcing the mistakes. They were then much sharper than we are used to at winning the loose balls and highly competent at retaining possession thereafter.

  13. Valencia attempted to build a stadium a couple of years ago until they ran out of money yet they started with a 40million pound player on the bench tonight

  14. The problem is not the centre of the defence it is the centre of the MF.

We have no threat through the middle — all we are coached to do is walk the ball to the wings and test their resolve / set up.

If they are on their game walk it back to the other wing.

RC — huge talent / great potential but he is as immature as sushi.

Needs to improve his focus and his concentration.

CMcG — second string / squad player at best but our standards are so low that he is now the critical player.

SB — phoning it in now and he knows it.

He was on edge the whole game — not comfortable at all.

At least when we wake up in the morning, we will know that we…..will have £44m gross in the bank unless their has been an overnight bonus payment:-)

Disappointed tonight. Outplayed and out thought.

!!BADA BING!! on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:27 PM

80% of the possession stats are by our back 4,in our own half,

This is why I turned off after 2nd goal. Sideways, backwards sideways, until they lost possession.

Cannot compete outside Scottish competition because lawwell won’t invest in decent centre backs.

Defence will always hold the team back because one single striker upfront can’t score even one against decent opposition.

Brendan stop this manic play from the back garbage in Europe. More chance just punting baw up the park. Embarrassing

  17. How much a team cost was not the only difference tonight. Surely we can all see and agree on that.

    Sick as the proverbial .

  18. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see@10:36

we cannot compete with teams from Europe with a fraction of our turnover

we are run as a cost savings business with sevco as the excuse for it

we would be in afar better position with different CEO, DD remit is clear zero debt, how you get there is up to CEO. the Dembele money should all have been given to the manager

remember the big Vic money lennon got none, hence he walked. w e sold VVD for a large sum. Ronnie got nothing and we were turfed out of Europe because we had zero center halfs

this is the squad for the CL qualifiers No center halfs, at present no strikers, full of duff wingers

    once again lawell must go

  19. What is the Stars on

One good thing about tonight is our cash in the bank has risen from 27 million (yesterday P67) to 50 million ( the hands cant hit tonight)

So thats a 23 million profit

    Fair play to Peter Lawwell.

    Double the bonus

  20. MadMitch

calmac has struggled against better opposition in Europe, its a sad induction of our midfield that he is our best player brown is years away at this level. our standards have dropped, give me stan or Thompson . both these players would walk into this team

  21. What is the Stars on

I really hope we do sack Lawwell before our next European adventure

Be intersting to see who the malcontents will blame on us being beaten by superior teams then

Of course if we sack Lawwell we might win something

  22. We started really well. Easy to forget now.

Valencia took stock and started to press high and tight. And suddenly we lost all precision in possession. Broonie almost set up a tap in….for them!

Two mugs goals and it was then a training session for them. I felt sorry for izzie that he had to play this game and sorry for Jonny Hayes that he couldn’t get a game. That’s just me being sentimental. Truth is, Neither are fit for purpose at this level. And no heated driveway has ever been an effective full back.

Some real zoomers in the crowd around me.

On the plus side, I got a pre match hug from Dena!

  23. “CMcG — second string / squad player at best”.

What is the basis for that statement? Tonight’s display ? Wasn’t his best night but that description is just rediculous.

    Jeez I thought

Ryan Christie’s assessment was bad enough.

    Must be needing a reaction.

  24. Tippy tappy building from the back football against decent opposition only works if you have players capable of close control and the ability to receive and pass a ball under pressure. On tonight’s showing we clearly do not have many that fall in to that category in our current squad. Harsh but given the performance this evening sadly true.

  25. SYDNEYTIM on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:46 PM

You really should have a glance at the accounts .

You do understand PLs bonus was based on commercial KPI’s which were smashed ,which meant record breaking finical revenues .

  26. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

@WHAT IS THE STARS on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:48 PM

“Period end net cash at bank of £38.6m”

That’s out net position. We know we have bank lending and other debts (although when the principal falls due I’m unsure) so circa £50m in bank.

  27. We do not have enough quality in the squad and we don’t have enough personality / resilience / confidence in the quality we do have.

JF is a case in point.

Man boy who doesn’t want to grow up.

Will do well in a more mature squad but is floundering in the salt ‘n sauce cheeky chappy environment that SB has built for himself at CP.

Nobody tonight wanted to fix the mistakes of others.

It was a case of get rid of the ball and hide.

  28. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ NOTTHEBUS on 14TH FEBRUARY 2019 10:54 PM

No it wasn’t. It was based on us qualifying for the Champions League group phase.
