Disappointing result, and the away leg will be a challenge. I think it is a fair representation of the level we are at right now – and that is a sickener.
I’ve always felt that those in control at the club would be happy for Celtic to finish 2nd-last in the league so long as the huns were last. That’s the level of ambition that we show most often.
Still, good to come on here after the game, nothing cheers me up like millions of pop-up ads…
Great night in Paradise cracking gazebo, then we filtered away into the ground and the match started, for fans that haven’t been for a while, hard to believe I know but the atmosphere in an after Christmas Celtic Euro night has gone to another level.
Like Barca, who were 2-0 down last week, except we had no Messi to claw back the irreversible from the Spanish side who got their focus shortly into the first half, when the the light show had faded. The scene was perfectly set but Valencia pressurised us, with the ball and they pressured us without, the ball and this was a massive learning curve where the gap between The Bats and El Submarino is bigger than Celtic and Sevco.
Time and again they took the ball clean from feet and the increasingly restless crowd knew the night would be barren as soon as the second goal went in. Hard to tell from my angle but both goals looked offside, though I’ve been told they were both on, Brendan Rodgers was looking for a decision as well, but in vain.
The ‘high press’ never stood a chance as Valencia simply passed us off the park when we weren’t pinned back in our own half , where BR’s preference of ‘Backsie in’ came under severe Euro scrutiny leading to us being quickly dispossessed, more than once. Stealing the ball from James Forrest Scott Brown or Callum McGregor is a rarity, not so in UEFA games it seems, as they all had their pockets picked.
Anonymous night for one or two Celtic players, but there’s little you can do without a ball. Not disgraced, and by the time we play in the qualifiers the side will have a different look, this one have other priorities en route, more within our capabilities.

Two 21 year old replacements and Izzy.

Fool Time Whistle on
Disappointing to lose tonight but we needed our players to turn up with their A game.
We also needed the manager to bring his A game.
Bain played well & had no chance with either goal. He made two fine saves that could easily have gone in. His kicking got off to a poor start but on occasions he was given almost suicidal passes with an opponent on top of him. Somehow he got the ball away. On reflection he may have been the most composed Celtic player on the field.
Toljan was good & one of our better outfield players.
Poor Izzaguire had a nightmare game & showed every day of his age against faster & sharper opponents. He gave the ball away too much. He got caught flat footed & played Sobrino/Cherchyev on for the first goal. He then seemed to dawdle back behind Sobrino as he advanced towards our goal for the second goal. He even looked over at the linesman while trotting back. To watch as Sobrino got between 3 Celtic players inside the 6 yard box to score was a sucker punch. Quite how Izzy was kept on while Christie was subbed is mystery, compounded by Callum McGregor being shunted to left back while Izzy was given a left wing back role. We went from having an older.slower man at left back to a younger, faster, less experienced man who was also missed in midfield. Callum has the quickest feet in our squad & even he wasn’t quick enough tonight, but as soon as he went to left back we seemed to lose what little grip we had there.
Valencia were compact without the ball & quick, slick & expansive with it. We were neither good without it nor with it. They showed their qualities with the first goal. Callum felt he was impeded as he tried to weave through two of their players. The ball broke from one of them to Cherchyev who with one touch played a pefect pass to Parejo. His second touch was a perfect pass for Sobrino who ran on & laid it back to the still runnning Cherchyev to tap in.
Celtic had no penetration down either wing, both Sinclair & Forrest seemingly surrounded by opponents when they ran with the ball. Toljan gave Forrest decent support & still defended pretty well. On the other side though, Izzy was always available to support Sinclair but as the first half wore on he seemed to find the defending & attacking duties too onerous. His flatfootedness with the offside that wasn’t summed up how the game was going for him.
Our players were required to operate at a higher tempo than they were capable of against this team. Composure was at a premium all across our team – Toljan & Bain apart. Senior pros, seasoned internationalists & confident youngsters all seemed unable to put their foot on the ball to help calm others down. We always tended to look comfortable when they conceded our part of the pitch to us, but when they wanted to press in our third we were in trouble. I counted 4 occasions when Scott Bain received a pass in the middiel of his goal with a Valencia player closing on him from 3 yards away. Hasty passes to colleagues who were themselves under the same type of pressing usually led to a loss of possession within 3 passes.
Valencia players could do with one touch what took us 2/3 touches & combined with a passing accuracy that we could only dream about they were technically superior.
Physically, they seemed fitter than us but sometimes that’s an illusion when we are the losing side.
Tactically, they were far ahead of us.
Professionally speaking, they went down easily & usually for the referee, convincingly, when they felt the need.
Combined, all of those factors were enough for them to not lose the game. Our naivety gave them their two goals – although they took them well.
Unless there were injuries to Christie or Sinclair I can;t understand why they were taken off & Izzaguire kept on. With Callum dropping to left back for 20 minutes at the same time, we lost Christie, Callum & Sinclair from our midfield all at the same time. We looked like we had no midfield – no, that’s not meant to be funny.
We had nothing down the flanks & nothing down the middle for most of the game. Our three units seemed to mostly operate separate from each other & it was left to individual players to get the ball and “do” something. Forrest, Burke & Sinclair usually.
I’m sure if we played in a league with this level of opposition we’d improve but we’ve nit the ground with a bump tonight. What works against most of the SPFL is clearly not good enough in the last 32 of Euro competitions.
Onwards & upwards though. Flaying ourselves, the club, the board, the CEO, the principal shareholder & everyone else is pointless. We have a league to win & a cup to win. We’ve enjoyed our play since the break so moaning now is pathetic now. in my opinion.
Two last things.
The referee was so inconsistent that I’m sure his middel initials are SFA.
I watched the game on a BR Sports stream in the USA, but the commentator was an unidentified Englishman who was less than fair to Celtic’s players. On every occasion for a decision he sided with Valancia, but failed to see them exaggerate every contact. He was subject to some adverse comments in our house.

In all these PL’s bonus meanderings I find it mystifying that those who acknowledge it is based upon qualifying for the CL never explain why someone whose bonus is so dependent doesn’t use someone else’s money(Celtic’s cash in bank) to ensure that he does actually get it!
It’s a well known fact it’s easy to spend other people’s money!
