Celtic were done by VAR but the title race is on

234

Celtic were done by VAR yesterday.  After receiving soft-ish penalty kick, which VAR John Beaton was unable to overturn (because the decision was technically correct in every aspect), he intervened twice in incidents which left scope for referee interpretation.  Consequentially, he determined not only the outcome of the game, but which team tops the league table today.

While struggling against Motherwell a week ago, clear comparable incidents to yesterday’s penalty and red card against Celtic were overlooked.  Yang’s red card was the most egregious of the decisions and ultimately led to everything that followed at Tynecastle.

For unrelated reasons, Celtic remain within touching distance of the top of the table.  Newco’s impressive record of only having lost to Celtic since September crashed at home to Motherwell. The two-point gap at the top of the table will not determine who wins the league as much as which team plays better in the remaining fixtures.  On that point, there is reason to be hopeful.

Yesterday’s 2-0 defeat was completely different than when Hearts won by the same result in December.  Celtic’s passing, movement and purpose was significantly better at Tynecastle.  We still struggle to know what our best 11 is.

Without injured Callum McGregor, there was still no place for Kyogo, who started on the bench.  After coming on at halftime, our Japanese fulcrum put in one of his better performances of the season, playing in a deeper role, behind Adam Idah.  In a side without Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor, there should have been a place for Kyogo.

Look back at the players faces after fulltime at Fir Park, the smiles and camaraderie, which had been missing, was clear to see.  Teambuilding took a further step forward on Wednesday and I am sure yesterday’s shenanigans will further build a siege mentality into the squad.

A friend recalled the 1979, 1986 and 2008 league wins this week.  Celtic looked unlikely to win around this time of the year in both those seasons, but they clicked at the right moment, leading to wins some of us still talk about.  It’s on.

  1. Sorry to bring up the issue of our recruitment again but signing Shankland in the last window was an absolute no-brainer. A great finisher and can take a penalty kick. He was out of contract so we could have got him for a million and a half. But at 28 he had no sell-on value so that ruled him out for our Board of Accountants. Still, we have all that money in the bank.

  2. I see the sun has dug up leckie for his thoughts on Brendan , well they would wouldn’t they .

Dermot Gallagher AGREES with the Penalty against Celtic yesterday !

Chris Sutton replied…”But Sutton was having none of it as he shared the clip on X adding: “Dermot Gallagher giving credit to the officials for awarding penalties similar to the one Iwata was penalised for pretty much sums up the wooden, rigid thought process when looking at incidents such as these north of the border. The whole incident wasn’t looked at.”

I thought I would hold off from commenting on the debacle at Tynecastle until I saw the unbiased views of the Sky Refwatch team.

So, Dermot Gallagher (A Tim) thought that our penalty award was wrong – he thought it was a foul the other way!, the red card was right but Yang was “unlucky” and the Hearts penalty was “harsh and unlucky” on Iwata.

I thought our penalty was very soft in real time. However, after repeat viewings its clear that there was contact. I think the fact that Beaton doesn’t dive in to challenge it confirms that!

On the red card there was no discussion around whether or not the referee made a Clear And Obvious Error in brandishing the yellow card. Surely that is very relevant here? I’ve just seen a still from our game v Motherwell where Maeda nearly had his head taken off. There was no card there!

DG said about the Hearts penalty “to be fair, they are very consistent in Scotland. Every handball in the box is deemed a penalty”. This is, of course, incorrect. Goldston has got away with this around 6 times over the past year and again, in our game v Motherwell last week, Iwata had a shot diverted for a corner by a handball. This wasn’t even checked by VAR.

DGs two buddies agreed that ours wasn’t a penalty, one said no red card while the (good) girl didn’t comment and both were aghast at the Hearts penalty.

I was disappointed at the lack of real scrutiny in the ” expert analysis “. If you’re going to do ref analysis it should be factual and crystal clear whether decisions are right or wrong . DG just seems to wing it.

I was hoping that the outcome today would strengthen our right to appeal the red card. I didn’t get that.

Should we? I’ll be very disappointed if we don’t.

  5. If yesterday,s cheating goes unchallenged by the clubs suits , then the game is up for us . Let’s see what they come up with although I fear it will be the same as usual from them .

  6. Big Jimmy,

9f course the views of Dermot Gallagher et al don’t count for anything.

However I am interested in what they think for an unbiased view.. A view without agenda.

Beaton and his irk have their own agenda. As Celtic supporters we have our own views.

    HH.

  7. I know it depends on who finishes in the top six but we should have three homes games and the huns should have two, after the split.

Irrespective of whoever falls over the line, we really need to improve our team. Left side of defence is sadly lacking at CB and LB. In years gone by, we’d still have fancied our chances of winning with ten men yesterday but we really don’t have enough quality and character. Still think we have a good chance. After all, the huns had a worse result than us yesterday. Very pleased that Rodgers, at last someone, spoke about Beaton yesterday.

  8. The Yorkshire Whistler will make interesting reading this week, no skin in the game, Gallagher is obviously protecting the referees, never calls them out.

    Refereeing has now become ‘subjective’

Try being subjective when you pay your electricity bill and you’ll soon find yourself in the dark.

The referees in Scotland are being ‘subjective’ with the rules of the game, yet this subjectivity only benefits one club.. ..

  9. I expect Shankland to move in the Summer, I expect him to sign for Sevco and to continue scoring goals, for whatever reason Celtic aren’t interested in him, maybe he has rejected any interest that Celtic might have shown, he won’t be at Celtic Park.

  10. Till now

Celtic have played 29 fixtures, 14 home and 15 away

We have till the split –

    h v st johnstone

    a v livinstone

    a v 2nd rangers

    h v st mirren.

so at the split – we will have played 16 home and 17 away.

if the top six stays the same we will have 3 fixtures at home and 2 away.

    thems will have the opposite.

  11. Gallagher’s assertion that the Iwata handball has been awarded all season in Scotland is demonstrably wrong.

I suspect they’re just talking shyte for an English audience because anyone that watches Scottish football knows Dermot Gallagher is gas lighting when he comes out with that.

  12. Long , long time Lurker (and I ain’t no hun ). Re all things Abada related I feel compelled to say my bit.

Ababada , as was Bitton , was ok playing with Palestinian flags. They may not have been ecstatic but flying a flag is of itself not a big deal.

But the GB deciding to glorify and celebrate a terrorist attack of such depravity whilst it was still happening took matters to an unacceptable level.

Do not re write history and convince yourselves Ababda left because of pressure from home. What he saw that day was all the pressure he needed.

And banners from the GB calling for the end to the Jewish homeland are hardly helpful. Those paragons of virtue in the North Curve have never called for the hostages to be released and never commemorated Holocaust Remembrance Day….unlike many other Antifa Ultras ( eg St Pauli ). There are many conflicts around the Arab world and many have resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths . Assad’s actions for example. The GB do not seem to care about those . Their fixation to the point of fetishisation upon hating Israel in particular is a no more than anti semitism all dressed up.

And this is where we are , a jewish player is hounded out ; jewish fans of long standing are chucking it , some not inclined to renew season tickets , others no longer going to away games. And yet we say with pride we are a club Open to All ? Bollocks to that…Celtic Park is not a welcoming space for jews now. And the whole of football and the sponsorship world knows it.

Those on here calling the right of jews to a homeland “ a cancer “ or seeking to deny the Hamas attrocities pretty much sums it up well. And you dare to think Abada left for other reasons ? Time to call it out fholks .

And If you know your History just to educate further , have a read of this from Wiki about the Sinn Fein Rabbi ….

“Herzog served as rabbi of Belfast from 1916 to 1919 and was appointed rabbi of Dublin in 1919. A fluent speaker of the Irish language he supported the First Dáil and the Irish republican cause during the Irish War of Independence, and became known as “the Sinn Féin Rabbi”.[9] He went on to serve as Chief Rabbi of Ireland between 1922 and 1936, when he immigrated to Palestine to succeed rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook as Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi upon his death. He became a supporter of both the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Irgun”

  13. if the top 6 stays the same, the league has a priority to ensure 19 home and away fixtures.

we will be home to Rangers and Hibs, equal h/a fixtures.

and either st mirren, kimarnock or hearts \f home for a third time this season.

and in a nightmare scenario for the league, to balance 19/19 we could be away to 2 of these teams for a 3rd time this season.

they will be praying that dundee or motherwell overtake hibs for 6th place.

  14. The PLC went along with the same club lie and put old Rangers FC £49 ticket price onto new club Sevco FC tickets in 2016 when we went to Ibrox that is 7,000 Celtic season ticket holders rubber stamping the same club lie.

And now a Mib referees the game unfairly and Timdom bawls its wee fearty eyes oot.

    Tough!

    GIFRUY!

Anybody who went along with the same club lie – that will be x 60,000 who financed the Celtic PLC who ok`d the same club lie cheating scandal which allows Sevco FC to pretend to be Rangers FC and retain their history full of stolen trophies through bigotry and tax dodging.

Oh but Ssssshhhhhh we won`t mention it and it will go away…anybody who does mention it and we`ll smear them as trolls who were never real Celtic fans like us.

Anybody squealing about a penalty or a sending off after complying with the greatest cover up of the greatest crime that football has ever seen deserves a slap…at least.

When complying with such corruption…you then cease to be Celtic fans.

Real Celtic fans in 2012 and onwards would have grabbed the entire Celtic executive out of the main door of the stadium by their necks and twirly moustaches and let it be known to the history books and badly needed updated mission statement that these types of crooked individuals and their practices would be terminated from Celtic FC and the PLC set up which facilitates if not nurtures such criminality will never be allowed within the walls of our great club ever again.

But we no longer have real Celtic fans – instead we have x 60,000 suck ups, sucking this, sucking that, sucking every media narrative for an easy life effectively deletes any notion that you are a Celtic fan.

What a mess of a supporter base all seating has created.

No Jungle = No Voice, No Mindset, No Balls.

Thatcher and her goons pulled a psyop [psychological operation] at Hillsborough in 1989 murdering 97 innocent working class Liverpool fans and the propriety mass media was wheeled out to drown public conscience in the dangers of football terraces.

Football terraces created and generated a societal collective unity which Thatcher and all anti working class MP`s feared the power being generated on football terraces and then reaching into further society.

Example – If we had still had The Jungle, The Kop, and The Stretford End, all three would have been chanting the name of, Jeremy Corbyn, at every game and JC might have got over the line at either the 2017 or 2019 GE in UK.

The Jungle`s spontaneous chanting would have educated the Celtic support about the untrustworthy crooked deceit and anti Catholic history of the SNP and Greens [who want to close all Catholic schools] and the terraces would have reshaped the Labour party leading to the end of Blairism before it got horribly out of hand, and we could all be living in more prosperous and less fearful times with Ireland reunited peacefully, and Palestine not being butchered into oblivion.

But we are were we are accepting crooked deceivers as our leaders and whining about MIB`s and a manager who says nothing about mibbery refereeing until it starts to bite his ass and making the manager look pretentious.

If you accept all of this then you are to blame not the Mibs.

Get over yourselves and get to the point or you too are pretentious.

    Oot.

  15. Long time lurker makes an appearance to talk on controversial issue.

    Of course.

  16. a few weeks ago there was a very good interview with an israeli sports journolist on the bbc scotland.

the questions started very slanted, but the journo gave a real good insight to things.

    the questions started with –

how does israel football authorities think of celtic supporters support of palenstine, thisa led onto a question that the gb supporter terror groups and that abada is being singled out for being jewish, so why would he want to play in front of them.

the journo countered with huge political pressure on the israel fa by the government to ensure players abroad are not playing on front of peoply sympatheic to the plight of gaza.

he followed up with examples of jewish players in turkey being singled out and leaving quickly, others in spain , france and germany not playing for their teams and indeed retunring home.

he said abada was no diffeent in that respect, and as a young man he would be feeling rmote, maybe lost, no matter what care and support the manger and club gives him.

the journo also said, it is the right of people wherever they are to demonstrate with their support for whatever causes they want, to such an extent, celtic the support are admired by many clubs in israel, many have arab culture historically, or left wing themselves., that 30% of teams and players are arabs.

the guy was good, did say his views would not be liked by a swathe of politicians at home, but he is used to that.

he finally said best for all concerned that liel moves on, and even that who knows, maybe the manager just doesnt think he is good enough.

i wont be drawn into any debates on this, i have jewish american friends in chicago and texas of all places who have told me they feel proud to know me as a celtic supporter.

    Genuine question…

  20. Celtic Football Club can confirm that it will be appealing the red card issued to Hyunjun Yang during Sunday’s match against Hearts at Tynecastle.

We have also written to the SFA to raise our serious concerns regarding the use of VAR and the decisions made within the match.

As we have said before, for some time Celtic has sought to work with the footballing authorities with the aim of improving standards associated with refereeing and the use of VAR in Scotland, something which is clearly in the wider interests of everyone within the game.

Celtic fans have a history of taking the side of minorities and the oppressed …always have done and always will do …every fan knows that and that would include any Jewish fan(s) who are apparently now leaving in “ droves “🤔

  23. How can anyone take sky referees watch seriously, they originally told us rangers ceased to exist then they done a complete u-turn, not credible.

These two high boot incidents by Celtic players are more similar than the St Mirren one that keeps getting mentioned, yet they keep mentioning the St Mirren one.

  25. if you know our history – indeed –

    —————-

On September 10, 1962 in a special match between Celtic and Real Madrid to raise money for the Jewish National Fund Charitable Trust, while helped refugee women and children in Europe and North Africa. The teams played for the Blue and White Cup and a total of £10,000 was raised for the charity. As well as ALfredo Di Stefano, Real also boasted the likes of Ferenc Puskas and Paco Gento in their ranks and it was no surprise they ran out winners by three goals to one, Stevie Chalmers netting Celtic’s consolation strike. He also had another goal disallowed.

I thought the three big decisions were all borderline. The reason we are not top of the League isn’t down to yesterday but considerably worse decisions thoughout the League to date.

  28. After Brendans comments post game the club had to support the manager. The alternative was self explanatory.

We have many ” chiefs ” at the club, including an assistant manager. I hope Brendan is not diverted from where his real focus should lie.

I would also like to think he will have a word with the first team coaches as to why our penalty ratio is so poor.
